I swore there was Canadian's in the pacific war, but i think they were in the English army regiments. Kind of like my grandfather was in the US army fighting in Spain with the Abe Lincoln brigade.we were at war when england declared war against germany, so when Japan showed themselves to be german allies after pearl harbor we also declared war with the Americans against Japan, however we had like 3 ships total at that time so I don't think we were much of a factor; not unlike today.

Two things, to start can you really be all that shocked it happened? I mean, people that took part in world war 2 are still alive and probably hold all the same grudges. Your people bombed the shit out of their country and made them (the people who value honor and that other junk) surrender out of fear. It really would not surprise me one bit. Do you honestly believe some black people would not ban white people from their establishments if they could? The second point I have is that most likely you have encountered a nationalist family/owner; you do know about Japanese Nationalists right? It's simply not surprising. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the same thing as Badguy, and I also abhor poor treatment and overall bad business sense but I think it's somewhat understandable, try contacting a better business bureau or something. What do you mean my people!?! :p
You know no Canadians or Germans (I'm pretty sure Germans are on the Japanese side during WWII) or probably Chinese are allowed right? And you should be surprised, if my friends were suprised - my Japanese friends - then I think it is safe to say that something is up here. I dunno, I'll walk in on my way home from school and pretend I don't know Japanese and say I can't read their funny sign. It is against the law for them to do this, I just wonder why the police haven't forced them to change their policy.
I forgot to mention that when Akina's bf (Gene, his name is Gene) said that they were discriminating the man that came out said that there are Western countries like England that do not let Japanese people in so it was "fair". I don't know why he brought England into the mix, but whatever there is like 5 shops near each other that are owned by crazies.

By your people I meant Americans, I assumed by most of what you wrote you are American. There is a chance the others aren't allowed due to how similar they look to Americans. I would suggest you contact authorities rather than try to cause a scene, a fine will hurt them more than you being thrown out ever will. Why did you ignore the rest of my post and focus on only two or three parts you didn't like?

I am well aware of Japanese nationalism and I am thinking about complaining against the places with the anti foreigner signs up. However, I thought I made it a bit clear that it isn't like they are holding a grudge against Americans for anything - I doubt anyone makes business choices based off WWII in Japan - but it is an Elitism. If it was only "NO AMERICANS" then maybe I'd think some of the shop owners parents were killed or someone was raped by a Marine. However, it say NOBODY BUT US JAPANESE. So basically, they want to keep it clean.
It wasn't like the option of my friends ditching me would of let them go inside. They were "dirty" the moment they showed up with a foreigner.
Maybe I'm not making any sense but I haven't gone to sleep yet since last night so forgive me. I may go to bed and re-read your post to see if I missed anything that you felt I ignored.
Screw school. I'll bring a note in on Monday saying I was racially discriminated against so I got drunk too far away from home and now I have a hangover.

When my friend was studying abroad there, he and his friends almost got mobbed by anti-gaijin protesters, and they had to have police escort. Not all Japanese people are like that, most of them are quite nice.

Not to be mean or anything, but just because there is no diversity here.
HOWEVER, most everyone here still acts very ([size=10]veryveryvery[/h]) polite and kind. They don't disrespect you for being different (except at Karaoke bars on White Pole Road in Misawa) and act more friendly than any other place I've ever been. But yeah I have a black friend here and someone once asked if her skin tasted like coffee soooooo.... Maybe japan could definitely use some cultural diversity infusion.

I'm not saying it needs to be, I'm just stating what I think one of the results are. Your aggressive tone is... uncalled for.

When you have, a sign, clearly shown up-front. You can do whatever you want, they probably.
don't give a fuck
and will probably say: Don't waste our time.
Or just pretend they care so that you could just shut up.
nothing will come out of this.

the country was a xenophobic wet dream until about 50 years ago, cultural acceptance wont just happen. How long do you think it's taken black people to move passed the bigotry that kept them down for years? Most still haven't.

Sure is insensitivity in this thread. If you guys can't accept that someone can react more severely than you to a case of injustice, that's kind of unfortunate.

I think this thread as derailed from irritation over a confrontation with some racist store owners, into a petty flame war. I understand it's irritating that racism still exists everywhere Japan and America and other places. What's at issue is someone's mistreatment over a grudge. However I am somewhat disappointing that this has followed the predictable curve of turning into a discussion of Japanese WWII racial sentiments rather than the opening subject, and or solutions to it. I'm not mad Fakku just disappointed.

@neko-chan: When I was in Japan, nobody cared that my Japanese sucked balls (then again, didn't speak much), but I suppose I got away from discrimination by being Asian (Taiwanese) but not Japanese. In my week in Tokyo, Japan, I've never encountered anything like that before, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
Like what Waar mentioned, I'm not surprised that discrimination exists in Japan since it is a rather homogeneous society. I really don't think WWII anti-sentiment had anything to do with the signs other than the fact that the people of Misawa are really close-minded.
I share my condolences, but there's nothing much you can do except to either go to the police and explain the infraction of the law or get a Japanese attorney and sue. (Does Japan even have a legal system and litigation laws like we do?) If you really want some revenge, tell all your Japanese friends of the places that discriminate and tell them to tell their friends, "Don't go to those !@$* places." Should decrease their customer base a little.

Yeah.
Sadly it's pretty racist sometimes... :\
And the worst part is no one Japanese (usually) stands up to it.

As to quote the greatest movie ever:
" 'Man, you just ran through a big pile of dog shit!'
'It happens.'
'What? Shit?'
'Sometimes' "
That about sums it up.

Wow. I'm really shocked by this. I never would have thought that a Japanese restaurant would flat out deny foreigners from entering, but I suppose I'm just naive. Racism is still rampant everywhere, and it's instances like this that really bring that fact to the forefront. I'm sorry to hear something like this happened to you, and I probably would have cried as well.
