Courtesy or Respecting Others' Choice (What would you do?)
0
Ok so I was on the bus coming home with some friends when an old man walks on I didn't see him so my friends told me to get up, as I was in the process of getting up the old man pushed me back down telling me to "sit down I'm on here for one stop" I said ok but my friends kept telling me to get up and he kept telling me to sit down. In the end I ended up staying seated but my friends would not stop telling me I was being insanely disrespectful. So what would you have done?

well if that man told u to stay stiing down that
would mean he didnt want to sit atm and was ok
for you to still sit dont think that is direspectful
in any way but was nice of you to give up your seat just dont
think that man wanted it

You already have the intention to get up, but the old man said he doesn't need it, he even pushes you back down, didn't he? There is no way you are being disrespectful. In fact, you getting up is already a proof that you respect that man, and it's his choice to sit down or stand up and let you sit down.

yea sounds like ure "friends" need to stfu. it was good that u offered ure seat at first but when he didnt take it thats fair game to remain in ure seat. if ure friends felt so strongly about it they should have offered their seats.

probably the exact same thing as you. offer the seat, but don't try and force it on someone who doesn't want it.

Well if the old man said he didn't want it then he obviously doesn't want it (until proven otherwise). I mean if he's using a cane or obviously has problem with balance then that might be another question.

He was using a cane which made me feel kinda shitty but he pushed me down hard telling me expressly to sit the fuck down

Well in that case:

If you offer they say no then it's fair game, plus he probably has stubborn pride or maybe the old man didn't want to sit down because he'd have a hard time getting back up.

It's courteous to offer your seat to the elderly or disabled, but if they refuse, you shouldn't need to feel guilty. I'd have done the same. Offer once, if they refuse, ask "are you sure?", and if they reassure me, I'm not going to sweat it.

I probably would have done the same thing Kittie had said, but just ask one more time and insist a little. If not, I'll do as he or she said and say thank you. If anyone bitches at me about it, I'll either ignore or counter and ask why didn't they think of standing up first.

They both got up and told me to do the same.
