Sorry for the inconvenience caused.
Getting back on topic, I believe you have already offered the seat to the elderly. If s/he were to reject your offer, it would be best to respect his/her choice. Some elderly people do not like to offered seats or given privileges based on their age.

If you would've kept insisting to have him take your seat, it would've been more disrespectful.
He told you to sit down, and to not mind it, and you refusing to listen to him would've been more disrespectful than you not offering in the first place. Keep in mind that it's common courtesy to offer a seat to the elderly, but it's disrespectful not to heed an elder person's order or refusal.

Well, it's polite to offer but if the guy doesn't want the seat then so be it. You can't force him to sit down.

He's not disabled and from his reaction doesn't appear senile, let him sit where ever is open, until he's physically deficient he's no less or more worth the rest of you guys and as such it was an unneccessary move unless for certain he would be put in a dilemma because of lack of efficient seating or the such and then it would be alright to stand up and if he would wish so,take the seat.
