So I've been thinking, there are multiple things I'm not good at compared to many people one of which is drawing. First thing I don't ever do is draw women the other is adding colors. I wanted to ask you guys to help me be a better artist. I have never really taken any art classes and I was wondering if someone could help me around here. Perhaps give me some things to look at to better improve my drawings.
Here's some things I've drawn recently
And if you're wondering why I made this thread, well an anon on 4chan called my drawings '3rd Grade' level so hell, if I got the time, why not do something about it?

umm.... i have a lil advice you should go find some tutorials on the net or youtube then pick up what you learn from those not exactly to copy them just pick up what you learn then improve to make it comfortable to you hand/mind and youl have you own style
second coloring is easy it come's naturally you do see colors around you there shades and highlights
and last practice always practice there is no shortcut in drawing (well except for Tracing i think that's the only shortcut)
don't worry about what people say maybe they'll even be impressed how much you've improved if you just practice
okay? ~chita!~ ^_^

Art classes are overrated. 'How To' books are also overrated. Almost everything that's supposed to "help you draw like the pros" is overrated. But do try them if you're interested, I guess it's a part of learning.
Where experience really lies is in dedication and interest. Keep drawing what you like and searching stuff about it and things will arrange themselves automatically.
Tracing is more of a step back than a shortcut. You won't improve by tracing.

art classes aren't needed unless your very new and want to take them to learn how things get done.
ill say to you what I say to everyone is look at the old masters also check out some actually great artist's rather then the generic artist who follows like everyone else in the same way...
Hmmm... so far hes one of my favorites for tutorials and commentates it

Thats the thing, I've been drawing like this my entire 15 years. Of course, my drawings were much more worse then but I've never used any sketch lines or whatever you guys use. So it will be cool if someone can tell me how I can improve.
EDIT: A suggestion from some anons were to work on human anatomy. So I've been just spending the last few hours drawing body shaped. Like so

you could copy the style of your favorite artists
doing this could help lead you in the direction of your art style

Just off the record I thought those were pretty good. And personally speaking I wouldn't want to take tutorials or take some class, that would make it way too boring. I just try to note tactics I see while jacking off.

Work on human anatomy, but don't just randomly draw figures that you think of. Take a life drawing class or two, and if that's not possible, use photo references. Drawing what you see will help you improve much faster than drawing what you know, because the latter keeps you stuck in an endless cycle of drawing the same things over and over again, no matter how wrong they might be.

Honestly after seeing your thread, im quite thinking whether I would post a reply here or not but since your asking for some "help" then I guess giving some "tips" wouldnt spoil anything.
I already checked your posted arts, and if your really asking for critiques, I can say that you really need alot of improvements..
"Who the h*** you are to say that to me?" < im quite guessing the word your going to say but the main problem in your drawings are anatomy and balance. To make things simplier, the best way to learn is to draw and draw, using real life reference or anything around you. Remember that artists always do observe and thinks to make an interesting artworks. The second thing that you also needs to consider is what do you really want to draw.
"I just want to draw, thats all~!" < even if you just want to draw, you must specify your "genre" so that you can easily focus on your studies and experimentation. Most of the genre's that I know so far are :
> Character Illustrator [Male / Female]
> Background Illustrator
> Mechanical Illustrator [ Mecha's or anything related with robots ]
> Manga Illustrator
> Real Life Illustrator
If you manage to know your genre then its time for you to focus on that one. Each genre have their own respective rules that you need to follow to draw them properly. You have to make efforts to study them, learn to observe.
Regarding bout the "BOOKS and HOW TO" < I would really prefer to have one if I were you. Learing the basics as well as tricks behind the drawings is "A MUST" if you really want to learn. Even I have several books, HOW TO DRAW MANGA series as well as real life pose reference and some CG Illustration techniques books. You dont need to memorize them all, just learn how things are made and get ideas there. Knowing the "Do's and dont's" are mostly explained within the books ;]
Then lasty "TRACING", other says that its a "SHORTCUT", or rather a stepbackward, I will leave the decision to you but its not that your not going to learn anything while doing it. BUT IF YOUR INTENTION IS JUST COPYING IT AT THE FIRST PLACE THEN YOU WONT LEARN ANYTHING, THATS FOR SURE. I learn alot from this process, but the main thing that your going to learn in this process is the "SILHOUETTE" and "DOLL BASE".
Explanation:
DOLL BASE
> doll bases are really useful to make a good artwork. Humans have forms. So it means that when you wear your shirts, your not going to pull out your arms then re-connect it afterwards. Its the same logic with drawings, Outfits must be "wear" so youll need to make a full body to make an accurate fitting. Doll bases are mostly known in the procedure as "SEE-THROUGH" style. You must learn this things first before jumping without using the dollbases.
SILHOUETTE
> this one will help you whether your art have a good impact or its just a lifeless pose. At the sametime, silhouette also helps in balancing the whole output.
The process is really simple, get a reference that you want to practice with, mostly, the reference is already wearing something so the thing that you need to do is to make it in a "NUDE" version so that you can make another outfit design later. Then thru that process, youll be able to create your own DOLL BASE to produce another artwork. "ITS JUST SIMPLY A THEFT"; as long as you will use it for practice then I guess theres nothing wrong with it. Though the process is tracing, but the result is really different from tracing. Learn from it by looking at the doll base whether its balanced or not, need some adjustments etc. This are the things that youll manage to learn in this process.
"ALL THINGS IN THIS WORLD ARE MADE OUT OF BASIC SHAPES"
knowing the main basic shape of an object will help you to draw easily :]
Hopefully that this will give you some ideas :]

Yea, thanks for that. I got a bunch of replies as well, most of them are negative but through this thread and the other one they all have the same issue: Anatomy and proportions.
Because I'm gonna have exams in the next few weeks to come I'm afraid I can't do anything about it until I complete it. But yea, I know the score and looking forward to reading some Andrew Loomis and anatomy drawings. You see, I've never used the basics of drawings before I simply drew without guidance so the consequences have become clear now.

Thats the logic of drawings buddy ;] remember that drawings are mostly born within the real objects. Learning to observe everything around you will help you grow :]

Well, at my University, my friend's professor would send them on campus and make them draw a still life of people walking.
You could do the same, and only draw the girls/women :D
Coloring is odd. I would know, as I usually tend do all my work in Black and White.
Just try adding color to sketches and see what works/what doesn't.
Experiment my friend, experiment.
EDIT: Anatomy and proportion has to do with actually LOOKING at the object/person. You could look at a picture if you want, but if you want to draw them similar to humans, your going to have to start looking at a LIVE person. It's a matter of observation and "Studying" the object/person until you make yourself reference points you can easily duplicate on any of your work.

tracing is alright to the extent of seeing how it looks and then after you try again without tracing until it satisfies you.

I'm never gonna get the hang of drawing women so thats one thing I'm not gonna work on. But when it comes to anatomy drawings I need to do some serious work. But that is after my exams

That's just a sorry excuse, how can you say that you can never get a hang of something if you don't even put effort on it? Keep drawing, always draw, and always experiment.
