My simple answer to you is that i havent, I'm my paid artwork i do a very realistic impressionistic (realistic rendering based on light)style. Cartoony and animated (anime included) is very difficult for me and i'm still developing the form language for it.

All right. Then let me rephrase the question. What made you practice the realistic impressionistic style beforehand? Also, don't you think that there are little things you do that make your art different from other people in the same style? If so, then what are they? I have a manga style, so even though my skill still needs a lot of development, I can tell that I tend to do certain things differently than what I hear from other people.

Well ZeroOBK,
I'm not a very good artist, is my short and simple answer. I practiced my realistic style because its how i can make pictures. Thats the short version.
Here are some sketches then onto a long explination:

I'll try to explain it in a longer version. First off i believe everythings learnable. Its just a matter of practice, talent and genetic disposition just make the process come along faster. I know many artists who get angry when someone says, oh youre just talented, they dont realize how many loose pages, sketchbooks, canvases, hard drives and hours they spent practicing. You do the pencil milage you'll do it too, it may take you longer but you 'll get there.
I see art in several levels.
First theres my level. I can paint and draw things i can see in front of me, whether its in life or reference. Dont take this step lightly, realistic work still requires some difficult skill, you need perspective, analytical division, and patience to bring a picture to finish, and i'm only 2 for 3. What it means is this type of person can mostly make an image understandable when he can form the art language by extracting whats infront of him.
Second theres a level i call abstract, emotional drawing, this type of person draws and paints according to the exagerations in their mind. This person creates an understandable image so that ppl look at it and know what he created.
Finally there is a level that masters both, its a person who takes reality and combines it with their abstract art language and is able to compose it in such structure that it is instantly readable.
This is regardless of style.
Now style arises from one your limitation and your willingness to go beyond your limitation. ie hours and hard work.
What is style, it is a persons perception, translated into meaningful and repeateable solutions to image problems so that they consistently and cohesively describe the form.
Stay tuned. this may only be the beginning of the answer.
if you want to develop your own style.
1. draw.
2. copy works of ppl you like to learn how they solved a particular problem. Ask questions? Artists generally like to answer technical questions because they are proud of the struggle they put into solving a problem. When you understand how they solved it it helps you find your own solution.
3. draw some more, now incorporate what you learned from copying.
many upcoming artists copied from their inspirations, many of them had the same one, frazzetta will come up, haruhiko mikimoto, akira toriyama, masemune shirow, koh kawarajima, rin-sin, andrew loomis, walt disney's nine old men, rembrant, luis royo, michaelangelo, mike mignola. They learned the lesson, took out the information, practiced it and turned it into their own.
Furthermore, post your stuff escpecially your rough work. ask for constructive criticism.(c&C). Fix what ppl suggest, if you agree with it, and let them know by reposting corrections. everybody loves a winner, but ppl are enamored with the underdog who never quits and works hard. son goku, naruto, ichigo, spiderman. Thats why there is such a strong fanship for characters who do it well, it forms a kinship in understanding of hardship.
With this i invite anyone who whats to learn to create images to join up, start posting. Ignore the negative comments, its usually made by ppl who are to scared to try thier own hand at it.

... Wow. Your views are very similar to my own. The only thing that isn't the same, is the division of art's 'levels'. Although, the steps you listed to develop a person's own style are exactly how I think of it as well.
It's funny ... whenever someone tells me that something I drew looks "good" or "great", I immediately get frustrated because I can spot at least 10+ things wrong with the picture. I feel like they are being nice rather than being honest. I also don't hear people saying things about my art that I don't already know myself.
I would post my own stuff, but I don't have access to a scanner at the moment. The best I could do would be to post some laughably bad old stuff. The responses to them might be interesting though ...

The division of levels the first two arent really levels but skill distinction whereas the third is the next level when you can create a more effective language.
I hope you get a chance to post stuff soon, you can always use a digital camera

Mind if I contribute something to this thread?
It's a Louise in progress.
About 20 minutes of work.
I had to erase a lot to get her hair to look somewhat right.
No actually i dont mind that what the point of this thread was for.
Now i want you to try to draw the line in a smooth curve rather than jaggies.
I pulled this example from a book called Force by Michael Mattesi you want to move from drawing type 3 lines to a type 1 line.

Now i want you to try to draw the line in a smooth curve rather than jaggies. That's actually quite difficult, my lines become anything but smooth.
Also my hand starts trembling from time to time, but I guess that's just a matter of practice.
Here's the result, I corrected her hair, too.

The hair looks more well defined, it coming along well. I liked the eyes from the first picture.

yeah drawing the lines smooth is difficult but i'll post a demo on how to train your hand. and also it helps to spin your drawing pad so its in a comfortable natural position position.
