Some people spend piles of hard earned cash on clothing or accesories just for a tiny tag with some rich assholes name on it. i buy all my clothes, except socks and underwear, second hand. even then, i don't think i have any major name brands. if i buy new things, i believe form follows function. it has to serve a purpose beyond looking pretty.
worst of all, is those fashion shows with the absurd clothes that no one would ever wear out in public. occasionaly a silly celebrity will buy one to wear once to an award show, then some other idiots will go on and on about whether it looks good or not.
it seems mostly women go in for this type of thing. but i have known a few men who do too.
i saw an eddie bower car(some ford i think) in a show room, right next to it was the exact same modle with the exact same accesory package. the one with the jerks name was well more expensive than the other, just because of the name stitched on the seats and a chrome piece. another example i saw was a crappy wind breaker with some name printed on the back foe $70. i got the same kind of jacket with out the name for about $5 at the flea market. that's a difference of $65 for the privilage of advertising for some jerk.
does anyone else think it's ridiculous?
can someone explain this phenomenon to me?

Skateboarding shoes are fucking worthless. No grip, ankle support, or a good sole. I don't see why people are willing to spend $150 on them when you can buy a really good pair of running shoes for $80.

I'm so hipster, I buy my brand name, pre-faded, pre-worn clothing second hand from Value Village, and I get my neon glasses from Hot Topic. True story.

I do think its overly ridiculous. I mean, I know I'm the total opposite. My wardrobe is filled with gray T-shirts, without any logo and each of them is like 3.5$. They are ALL identical. Same with jeans, they are all 5$, and are the very same. Underwear, the same and so on. When I go shopping, I found what I like, and then go like "Give me 6 just like this one".
I think my sneakers are the most expensive, they were like 40$ the pair, but it ended up cheaper because I bought another pair identical, so when these ones wear off, I would already have the next one (identical) waiting.
Now, why people do this? just think of those little 5 years old girls that uses their mommy's shoes and make up, by doing that they think that they are "closer" to they.
Same shit here. "hey! I'm wearing a stupid, useless and UNAFFORDABLE handbag that is the same as paris hilton!" translation: "hey! I AM like paris hilton". Same shit on everything. Low class people wear lacoste (I don't know if it is spelled like that) to feel like people in high class, high class people wears them to show that "they are high class, what I wear is not what you wear", like a dog peeing to mark its territory.
Ah... they suck.

I think brand name clothing is absolutely retarded, however; it's as much a part of the economy as anything else. It brings in income for small businesses as well as large ones and helps to creates jobs for those who need it. Sure, some rich asshole at the top of the ladder gets 90% of the dough, but the rest is thrown into a nations economy to circulate.
Personally I do have some clothes with brand names, but that's only because flea markets are a good place to shop. For the most part, I wear generic dress shirts, sweaters and T-Shirts from Wal-Mart or other low-cost places made with the blood, sweat and tears of Asian children.
It puts a smile on my face every time I think about it.

What I'm about to say may sound very hypocritical as my entire wardrobe, probably cost more than the Average Fakku User's Car(if they have one). I own these and wear them from time to time because when it boils down ot it, and this is rather vain. if I am to impress I'll be dammed it I don't look good while doing it.
Yes I have three Armani suit's, Designer Label fitted dress shirt's, that make Abercrombie look like rag's. As well as a Citizen Eco Drive Watch. Shoes that cost more than my monthly rent payment. I have the money to afford these thing's they sit in my closet, and I wear them when the situation arises(all but the watch I wear that every day). But you want to know something, I wear my suit's a hand full of times a year. Most of the time I'm wearing a white Fruit of the Loom T-Shirt w/ a button down shirt unbuttoned over it, and a pair of Wrangler Jeans. The only thing that I wear that actually scream money are my Crazy Bomb Doc Martens(the only pair I have anymore) and my watch.
But I can agree with the OP on some level, as I can't stand the red carpet "Who are you wearing?" It's not the clothes that define a person it's the person themselves. I'm more likely to have a pleasant customer dressed in nothing but clothing made of potato sacks than I am to be dealing with someone dressed head to toe in Louis Vuitton. the more name brand something is the more likely an asshole will be wearing it. It's why I got out of a career that paid me 50-60k a year, to the 22-24k I make now.
Whenever I'm in the mall I just want to bitch slap some teens and say thank you to their parent's because they won't buy them a 70 dollar pair of jeans from Abercrombie.
Our society is driven to a materialistic view too much. I remember I actually gave a pair of Doc Martens that I had worn only twice to a kid a few doors down from where I live because he helped me move some stuff around, his mom dragged him back thinking he stole them from me.
you can paint a lump of shit gold but it's still a lump of shit.

The brand name thing is a bit silly. It's a sense of what people think is better than something else and some people like to be better than others.
You say fashion but this seems more of a brand name discussion thread and who is wearing what's popular.

I've gotta agree with Space. If they earned the money, it's up to them whether or not to spend it.

First, I'm going to address the Fashion shows.
There are two major types of runway shows in the industry. Couture and Ready to Wear.
Ready to Wear
exists largely for buyers (i.e. people from department stores, catalogs, etc. that decide what brands they want to carry). These are generally what's considered the commercial lines mostly meant to be mass produced and mass marketed. Keep in mind that a buyer does not necessarily have to buy the entire look coming off a runway. Take the british designer Gareth Pugh. He sends some fucked mecha looking shit out but at the same time his pants and jackets are godly. Impeccably tailored and just overall well designed. And stores buy up his individual pieces even if their clientele won't be styled like an H.R. Giger creature.
Couture
exists largely for personal clients. Strictly speaking "Couture" means handmade, very intricate, detailed showpieces. This is the arena where the designers can essentially flaunt their stuff, push boundaries, have fun, etc. Occasionally a client (celebrity or not) will see a piece and say to the designer "this crazy thing you sent down the runway, I like it, but I'm going to an awards show in america so tone it the fuck down and make me look less fat in it" and the designer will make up a new dress based on the client's request. or the pieces are shopped around to stylists for editorial purposes.
I love couture, because I personally find fashion another means of expression, it's an art form. And I like seeing art that pushes boundaries. I mean for goodness sake, man you have a BOWIE AVATAR. You should be somewhat understanding of people that like to push boundaries through aesthetics. Thin white duke bowie? What you think he got those suits at a thrift store? Fuck no, Saville Row all the way.
Branding
I'm going to be honest with you, as a person who herself would someday love to be a brandname... I find nothing wrong with the beast. Someone is stupid enough to be a follower and make me rich? It's the American Dreaaaam!
But seriously, branding doesn't have to be a bad word. Sometimes, and I know it hurts to hear this, you really do get what you pay for, and word of mouth is a valid means of publicity. Now, not to say that all famous brands deserve it, no no, but that's where you come in as an intelligent consumer. Will a Dior suit fit you better then a syms suit? Yes. Do they have tailors on-staff to custom fit it for you? Yes. Does Tiffany's have high quality silver. fuck yes. Will they repair and polish your shit for free? Yes. You pay for high quality items, you get white glove service. I know my kick ass designer heels won't fall apart as easily as my cheap payless ones and get this, they're actually more comfortable to wear (to be fair, payless has HORRIBLE shoes).
Put it another way. Alexander McQueen (R.I.P. ;_;) is one of my absolute favorite designers. His clothes are not cheap in the slightest. If I had the money, would I put down $2,000 for his shoes? Yes. Why? Because I will then own a great pair of shoes that I can treasure as an art piece and as an accessory I would be proud to wear. Do I have this much money? Hell no. But maybe someday I will (at least that's the plan)
Can you look great on a budget? Absolutely. But instead of buying a ton of trendy cheap things that won't last two seasons, would I rather invest in an amazing statement piece that I can wear and treasure for many years to come? Yes. I absolutely would.
/end fashion nerd. (sorry. I get a raging metaphorical hard on for fashion theory.)

As a female speaking, I can say the cost of my clothes vary depending on what I find and where I find it.
My lingerie always come from one place, and the average bra is $37-$45 dollars. Usually they have panties on sale for 4 for $25 dollars.
Jeans typically cost anywhere from $20-36 dollars. I usually turn away if they reach in the $40 dollar range, because I know I can find jeans that will look nice on me below that price.
Tops I'm pretty finicky about, I usually won't spend more than $25 on a top, unless I really want it. However, I can't think of any time recent I plunged that deep for a top. I usually look at the clearance racks in good clothing stores to see if any old season is being tossed away getting ready for the new season and so forth.
Why do I spend potentially $40+ on a bra? I can't really explain it to make a guy understand, but any girl will know a $40 bra will last longer, feel better, support better, and look better over a $10 bra. If you can find a $10 bra that does that - you're considered an expert shopper imo.
Jeans work a bit differently when it comes to females versus guys. Female jeans are form fitting around the hips, behind, and thighs. (Ignoring skinny jeans, which I hate) I've found that I can't find jeans that will fit me the same way, accentuate, and last as long as cheaper jeans at say, Wal-Mart.
I don't buy clothing with some assholes name on it specifically, but because of the quality I can get from it versus something else.
You really can't tell me clothes are just as good at Wal-Mart as they are a specialty clothing store with brand names. I can go into Wal-Mart and find shirts that don't even have hems on them, I can see threads hanging loose, and I know that within a few months of washing that shirt will be useless.
I have 40 dollar pair of jeans that I've had since I was a Junior in High School and they still look and feel great. (That's 3 years old)
*Note: I do realize that I don't spend excessively as much as some other clothing labels out there, I do realize there are multiple hundred dollar pair of jeans out there, but realistically nobody, unless you live in that kind of area - nobody buys those kinds of jeans. They typically spend anywhere from 30-60 dollars. That goes for everything else I mention.

Well there is a simple answer, people like doing it, they say its fun and they afford so why hate. Most fashion designers clothing (ridiculous lady gaga stuff) isn't even sold in stores, its specially made, for those who ask for.
Also there is no real value for things....... If people are stupid enough to spend more than 40$ to 80$ bucks on shoes or jeans, let them.
Maybe because you dont see it as logical doesn't mean its wrong, or stupid.
Also, ultra cheap clothing come from somewhere.........(sweatshops more than likely)

This is relative. Before I used to buy jeans that were around 50$ thinking that they would last longer and be better, but the cheap ones I use now have proven that they are stronger, last longer and feel better.
Aside from that, blahdeblah, Ziggy, this post (I can beat) wasn't aimed for women. I mean, you don't need to convince me that a 40$ bra is worth. I know that for you, that is important, and at least I wouldn't even dare to tell you something about it.
I mean, I know guys that waste stupid amounts of money in putting useless stuffs in their cars, like neon lights on the lower side (wtf...) or spoilers or whatever, waste a lot of money in whores, and in alcohol. I can't agree with that, but I guess that is normal for a man.
I'm not, in any way, saying that women are superficial or narcissist, but for women look good and feel comfortable with themselves IS A NEED. Is something natural and normal and I totally approve it.
Now, there are limits for everything. If you were living in a cardboard box eating grass, coughing blood and wearing a pair of 500$ shoes, then that would be really stupid.
