This is relative. Before I used to buy jeans that were around 50$ thinking that they would last longer and be better, but the cheap ones I use now have proven that they are stronger, last longer and feel better.
Aside from that, blahdeblah, Ziggy, this post (I can beat) wasn't aimed for women. I mean, you don't need to convince me that a 40$ bra is worth. I know that for you, that is important, and at least I wouldn't even dare to tell you something about it.
Yes, I'm fully aware that the price = quality formula is relative (hence my sometimes modifier and the admittance that there are designer labels that are undeserving of the attention). But at least in terms of women's clothing, it does still hold enough weight to mention. It may not be an absolute, but it's a pretty safe bet. Does this mean I shop by price tag? no.
Also I find Designer Jeans a laughable concept anyway considering Denim was created as a working man's uniform. But that's a different story.
But anyway, I don't see why this conversation necessarily needs to be gender specific. Men's clothing is still something worth discussing in terms of quality and style. In fact, it ought to be discussed more so.
I'm not saying everyone out there should go out right now and buy a $50 tshirt (in fact if you do, I might have to laugh at you). But I hate the knee jerk reaction of people pinning fashion as a vapid, shallow thing populated by empty followers when to me it is a legitimate form of expression for any gender.

You see, I have friends that live for that, and I don't have to go far, my some of my own family members are like that.
What I found stupid is:
"I wear this because I want recognition"
"I can't pay for food, but I still wear this"
"I wear this so I could be seen at the same level of X person"
Hey, if you say "I wear this, because I love it, I don't care if I'm the last person in the earth, I would still wear it because I like it myself", then I have no objection.
I will not argue with you because we both know you are right. I should have been more specific with my first post instead.
About the gender, as I stated, in women THAT is important, and I can bet that if you were the last person in this planet, you would still look good and dress as good as you know. Women do like fashion for what it is, more often than men (I'm not saying that EVERY WOMEN ON EARTH IS LIKE THAT, but its more natural for them to feel this way).

I can't find any of my fashion theory papers at the moment, so I can't properly quote, but what we choose to wear (and I'm not going to use the term fashion for its connotation) consciously or subconsciously is an identifier. It's a means of establishing and showing our set of values, beliefs, interests, etc. Even the rejection of "fashion" is an establishment of your ideals and identity via clothing choices and in turn becomes... fashion.
When someone says "I wear this because I want to be seen as this type of person"
maybe it's the type of person you don't like. that's fine. you're allowed to hate.
But hate the player not the game!
or "I wear this because I want recognition"
To me that could translate to anything from a revealing cry for attention to a suit worn for a business meeting and all the little inbetweens.
Again, different set of values, interests, etc. neither less valid then the other. They are what they are.
I also think we're touching on the same points. Just from different angles. *shrug*

On to some more detailed specifics. High price tag can == or != Quality. I will agree with blahdeblah about designer label being quality work. Like I said in my initial post, I own three tailored Armani suits(thus the reason my entire wardrobe is possibly more expensive than the average Fakku user's car(if they have one) The price tag is high, I think the cheapest of the three is around 1600 but that's besides the point. Looking at me you see a man in a well tailored suit, you don't see the branding, you see a finely made and tailored suit. This is the time when Price Tag == Quality.
It's when you get to thing's like Abercrombie American Eagle Aropostile Holistier ect. That you get price tag for Wal-Mart Quality. Companies that use Buff bodied male models and skinny little bimbos to model their products so people will buy them. I have maybe three t-shirt's from Abercrombie, these were gift's I refuse to step foot in that store, so it's let them rot in the closet or put them through torture that they fall apart. I've chosen the latter and wear them when I go to the gym.
It's not so much that I have a problem with the brand itself, they are comfortable shirt's when they have been beaten and worn to the point that I have used them and washed them. one of which I use as a dust rag now because the seams have finally gave way. It is the people who buy the clothing. This is where I will expanded on the "You can paint a lump of shit gold but it's still a lump of shit" remark in my first post.
There are two types of people IMHO those who don't give a fuck and those who are gold plated shit. The first are basically as C13R-66Y summed it up. People who wear what they want because they like it, or have no means to afford the department store's latest seasons. These people are decent people, and for the most part are not brainless idiot's. Then you have Gold Plated shit, the scene people, fashion plates, the "I wear this because XYZ Wears this, and XYZ is cool." These are the people I would like to throttle, the people who own an iPhone because it's the cool thing to do.(I own an iPhone but that is because of functionality, and the mobility it lets me have for the best price at the time of buying(right after the 3GS came out and dropped the price to $99.99))
make the dission for yourself and not because of someone else. think long and hard before you drop 100 for a pair of jeans. am I spending this 100 on these jeans because I like them or am I doing it because I want to be cool? if you answered the later then you need to smack yourself put them back and walk away, saving yourself the money.

I still don't get how people are so obsessed with fashion.
Sure, I LOVE to look at websites and catalogs and dream of wearing the clothes, but I find that when trying many on they just don't suit me. I keep my style simple and to a few certain types of clothing, though I'd love to be able to rock it all!
I only clothes shop when I really have to, or on special occasions with friends. As much as I'd love to buy it all, I don't have the money and I know I only can wear so much functionally.

That sounds good so far, the sad part is that they look like this...

I mean, everyone is free to wear whatever they want, but I'm pretty much aware that if I were to wear some tight clothing I would look ridiculous, and even in my "I don't care if people think I look good" mode, I would still feel ashamed.
More than if you can afford fashion, for fucks sake... know your condition before everything else!

Yeah... there are people like that everywhere, lol, not just Panama! While I think it's fine for people to wear what they like (hey, freedom of expression and whatnot is good), I prefer a combination of good fit, look and actual appropriate sizing. If something's going to make me stick out in all the wrong places, I avoid it.
Skinny jeans are awful... and now there's a skinny jeans LEGGINGS trend. -3-'

I've seen fat girls, but they know how to dress up and I find them cute/beautiful, and way more than a skinny bimbo who doesn't know how to even combine colors.

Exactly this is my problem, there are not only two types of people. Why does having the means to buy something automatically equate to being a "gold-plated piece of shit" while not having money makes you a "decent person".
I can show you a poor brainless jackass just as easily as I can show you a rich brainless jackass. Hell I can probably show you a middle class brainless jackass.
I understand what you're trying to say, and I'm totally in agreement with you on the notion of making your own decisions and buying a product for its innate value to yourself, and not what someone else tells you is its value. But it's so easy to have this conversation devolve into Rich vs Poor, and if you're into buying clothes you = brainless jerk. And it's a tired argument.
And just for the record, I am a poor jackass. I don't run to the designer labels when I need clothing because I know I can't afford it as much as I admire it. I have a few statement pieces in my wardrobe that I saved up for/waited for huge sales/been gifted. I also justify most of these purchases by being a stylist and pulling from my own wardrobe for photo shoots. Most of my day to day wardrobe is H&M/thrift store and once I start disliking any of my pieces I will reconstruct it into something I will like wearing again. I have a hard time parting with $30 for a dress and really have to think it over before I buy. I dress how I want to, and I make no excuses, this could mean I roll out freshly pressed and dressed to the nines or this could mean I roll out in sweats. Whatever value someone wants to place on me because of my clothing really makes no difference.

Ofc this also goes the other way around, I get really happy if I manage to find something nice on second-hand or for a cheap prize.

Ok, I don't spend 150 bucks on them (hmm, bought some Lakai shoes for around $40 over a year ago...), but seriously. Nothing else fits my feet. They are so fucking wide they don't even fit into most shoes without hurting like a motherfucker.
That aside, I never wear anything with a (visible) brand on it. Shoes are an exception, but I can't really help it unless I want to go barefoot lol
I mainly wear simple yet colored Tees, sometimes band shirts, and simple jeans. That's about it... oh, I wear tie-dyed shirts too lol... nearly forgot. It just looks so funky, and you can go crazy with the design. That's what DYI is all about.
