The teacher was like, the minute you step through that door, no English. Then we just kept repeating simple phrases. I do not even remember them all, I only remember the shorter simpler ones. Like:
(Forgive me if spelling is off, we focused on pronouncing them not spelling them)
Ohio-Good Morning
Konichiwa-Good Afternoon
Konbanwa-Good Evening
Sayonara-Good Bye
Domo, Arigatou-Thank You
Gozaimas-How to address the professor
How to ask for something(do not remember) then saysing Doso(here), Domo(thank you), Eyaya(no problem or your welcome)
We also learned how to ask what is your name and favorite food but I can't remember those. Man that class was a bit overwhelming considering my Japanese consists of a handful of words.

I guess that's only the easy part, I learned those words/phrases from watching anime.

I knew some of those to from watching anime, but the greetings I didn't know when to use them, knew how to thank someone and that is all I knew from watching anime, well besides a few words we did not go over like gomenasai (very sorry), nane(what), didn't know how to address the professor(looked up in the book, its to address a superior)

A lot of foreign teachers teach this way. Some countries even prefer the teacher not know the first language very well.
Rosetta stone also teaches this way by using images and you listen to the voices who speak the native language. You put what they're saying to the image and you learn from listening, speaking, and writing over and over again.
Just be prepared to do a lot of out of school practice. Unfortunately to learn a language well you have to put in a lot of effort, and anything the teacher suggests you do or study, always do.

Heh that would be really cool, but try to get into a college. That is what I am doing right now, going to PSU and taking Japanese 101, I am probably not going to play very many games during the week(OMG!!!), I am going to devote most of my time to studying Japanese. If your college does not offer Japanese, see if their is an online course you can take from another school that does offer Japanese that will count as credits towards your college(if you are going to one)
What would really work I think is if you can get someone over a chat room that you can talk over like Vent, cause just posting topics about how to learn Japanese won't allow you to learn how to speak it with the correct pronunciation.

I've heard a few people say that as good as Rosetta Stone is for most languages, it doesn't work terribly well with Japanese. I acquired it (shhh) to see for myself, put in a good five hours and got absolutely nowhere. I realise it's meant to be challenging but I really couldn't get to grips with it. If you're going to teach yourself, Pimsleur for spoken and Genki for written seem to be held in high esteem, but a tutor would do wonders.

True enough. I wasted so many years of Spanish because I never put it into practice. I like to think my Spanish is still average enough, but considering I took six years of it I should be fairly good with the language, but I have forgotten much of it without having used it outside of the classroom. Not to mention, was never forced to in the class often enough either.

I'm in Bangladesh, I don't know any colleges that offers to teach Japanese, its a language not catered for on this land which could be the reason for it.
