I use bokken for sparring practice. A 42" synthetic. It's heavy. I've been hit in the knuckles once with one and could grip anything properly for two days. They are harsh, but more real. It gives you more incentive to dodge or block the attack. And yes. Being hit in the head with them will also put you on the ground or kill you. They are durable and hard enough to chip a driveway when swung with enough power. I've done it three times. Cold Steel bokken. Cold Steel being the brand name.Sound like my kind of thing. I'm always a risk taker.

Someone send me a Wooden Sword (Bokken). I so would love to own at least one. I only have two "Rattan" sticks and a thin, metal pipe :(
On topic, I would love to learn even the basics of Kendo, just like other sports related to the way of the sword.

Then you can go to the nearest dojo in your country....
For it is important to have a 5th dan above sensei to teach you, so you can trully know the basic of kendo...

You can just ask them in their blog....

You can try finding information from Indonesian Kendo Federation....
I am not associated with them....
But the negative point is that club was rumored for not having a japanese sensei...
So if u really wanted to practice, try JJS...
Cause it is the only option....

Depending on the circumstances, if you have a sensei teaching your dojo would have been enough, he/she doesn't necessarily have to be a japanese.

Wazzap! So its just you and me that practice Kendo on fakku then, that are still here anyways.
3rd practice! Woot xD Oh and your comment about someone over 5th dan...not necessarily. As long as someone is 3rd dan they can teach but usually they are the junior instructor of the dojo's and are told to teach you when the chief instructor (in my case 7th dan) is busy with something.
But really, take any instruction you can from someone higher ranked than you simply because, they didn't get there by sitting on their ass, they know what they are doing.

When you do make sure its a certified Dojo by whatever governing body is in your country. I know of one non-certified one in my area and the Kendo there is....not bad but not good, lot of improper techniques or slight mistakes that will build bad habits.
Cause thing is with today's martial arts, you get a lot of cookie cutters who are in it just to make money and don't know what the hell they are teaching. Probably some internet warrior who read something online and started to do it and teach people.
Just remember to do your homework when joining.
