LA is fucking awesome. I know coz I live here. ^__^
If you live in or around the city center, you can get away with using just the Metro and local bus lines, and maybe a bike, to get around places. If not, you definitely need a car. Drivers are crazy, but not as crazy as, say, drivers in Asia. Memorize the freeway systems.
I have a looooong-ass restaurant recommendation list, so PM me if you want that. Teh bf and I are foodies on a budget, so we know lots of places to eat well for cheap.
Hmmm, what else...if you don't speak Spanish already, you will be able to speak at least some of it once you've lived here a couple of months. Nightlife in Hollywood is awesome. Listen to 91.5 KUSC when you're in traffic to calm road rage. If you have any more questions, just ask. XD

Never been to any of those places except for West Hollywood(first and possibly last time there was during the AIDS walk). Only place I'm cautious of is Lincoln Heights.

I'm cautious in Compton.
Never really ran into trouble in Lincoln Heights.

Only trouble I ran into at LH was during a 3am run to 7/11 with a couple of friends and a group of idiots that started shit with family.
Other than that, it's the usual teenagers picking fights on the streets and cops hardly doing a thing.

There used to be a Japanese restaurant in Little Tokyo called Tokyo Kakuen
Great sushi bar and the best tempura and shabu shabu ever. Don't know if its still there.
For cheap there is Pinks in the valley. Great hot dogs
Also Bobs Big Boy in Burbank
Niko probably knows all the cool places to eat and hang out
Like she said she lives there
I used to live there

Don't be tempted by the 14/f/cali now that it seems feasible. It's still a trap.or a cop

Haven't been to Little Tokyo in about 2 months, haven't had sushi in 2 years. Curry House, Cherry on Top, and the many ramen shops are worth going to as well.

And that wouldn't be a trap? Or does the cop just want pedo sex?

Whenever I go to L.A. Pinks is a must stop.
Even if I have to travel clear across the county using the "Just was in the neighborhood and thought I would stop by" rational.
EDIT
Crap I hate getting old and forgetting
Near Dodger Stadium there is a hamburger stand
cannot for the life of me remember the name but whenever we went to a dodger game That was supper.
Also Olvera St and right up the road is (Leave Olvera st turn left go 3 blocks)
Phillipes Awesome french dip Sandwiches
And if you can find it
The Pantry great lunches cheap and more cole slaw that one kid could eat

Yep, that. There is a reason for the long lines!

My cousin says it's really good, but I don't want to wait that long just for ramen though.

If you come before 6pm, you'll get seated immediately, but it's worth it even with the wait. Or, you can go to one of the other branches in Hacienda Heights, Monterey Park, or Costa Mesa. Atmosphere and menu in each of the stores isn't exactly the same, but the ramen is.
