Coming from a girl, myself.
I admit I've done the whole "we can be friends still!" desperate attempt to keep intact some level of friendship. Usually its an attempt to lessen the blow, and show that I don't completely want the guy out of my life. But in most cases, we still grow decently apart.
For the second part, I've never understood why some women do the "prove your love" thing. I've learned that its the little actions or words that the guy does/says that keeps me knowing he still has interest in me. But then again, I've never been in a relationship where its gotten to both partners loving one another.
And finally, yeah...us bitches do often have annoying "games", if you may. But not always. And sometimes its seriously not on purpose. I've caught myself doing that once and didn't even realize it until it was pointed out. Girls are just annoyingly complicated.

I myself don't say "we can still be friends". People I've never even been friends with in the first place has confessed to me, and there's no reason to say anything but "No thanks, I'm not interested" with a little smile. People I've broken up with... let's just say I've been unlucky with guys, so I've just wanted them out of my life.

It is so you can get over it and not be a wailing little bitch. Sometimes a relationship is just okay. instead of staying together so you can pretend to be nice to each other when you know that you don't want to be with this person for the rest of your life, you offer to just be friends. You don't hate them, and you still care for them as someone special. However, you don't want to be romantically involved anymore.
The only way you won't be friends anymore is if you broke up in a nasty and hurtful way or if the guy is to much a crybaby to move on.
