Smartphones VS "dumphones"
What phone you have?
0
In recent years the rise of Smarphones was incredible. More and more people have switched their phones for smartphones and their popularity is rasing more and more as new functions are presented making them cool and "now".
But to me these smartphones aren't such a thing as for others. Yes I am a tech fan I appreciate that they have all these functions but to tell the truth I have no reason to buy a smartphone.
They may be useful but as far as I noticed they're not strong builded I often see them with broken displays and death zones. I saw a few "outdoor" smartphones but I have my doubts about them.
I myself own Sony Ericsson P1i as an PDA (carry it at school and when in the city), but my phone is Samsung B2710. I do a lot of things like rock climbing, Mil-sim and survival. I need a sturdy phone that can go with me while I fell to river or when I slide on unstable rocky hill. I need to have him in quick reach for quick SOS dial in case of emergency. In this case I found smartphones to fragile to "keep pace with myself". I am interested about other people. What is your stand about smartphones?

For people not in the know, Samsung Galaxy Nexus (Android), Apple iPhone 4s (iOS) and Nokia Lumia 800 (Windows Phone) from left to right. The top-of-the-line flagship phones for all three smartphone platforms. Now stop calling me an Apple fanboy.

And now the question. If I break my arms nad need do and SOS call can I do that with that cover?
Or can I do that when on top of snowy mountain in gloves?
I am sure that I can with my "letdown" B2710.

5 minutes later an ambulance will arrive.

Mmm I'm still not convinced about that. You left out the mountain scenario and I remember that iPhones have heat sensor touchscreens right?
EDIT: Also I'd like to see an ambulance in 5 minutes in middle of nowhere.

Though I see your point in this thread and post, there is a reason why these phone are very popular in urban and suburban areas.
They are for daily use in these places of course.
So, it's only natural for them to be proficient there.
You can't use wifi in the wilderness, but in the cities, it's practically everywhere.
Your touchscreen won't work in a snowy mountain, but I find it hard to believe that those temperatures can be replicated w/ your air conditioner.
It's hard to find use in a river-swept smartphone when your life is in danger, but come on, only stupid people would dump a perfectly good Iphone in a sink full of water then EXPECT it to work fine.
These phones are made for the fast-paced life in the cities, not for the mountains and forests.
"dump phones" are still being produced because people like you need them.
The people who call them dump phones are childish and immature.

for me I'd pick any phone
hmm..let me reiterate that... I have a smartphone and and an ordinary cellphone
my smartphones were given to me by my mom everytime she gets or renews a plan from the cellphone company. coz she doesn't want to use it. (maybe allergic to the "hassles" of touch screen). I'ts not like I demanded/begged for it to be given to me.
being very forgetful and accident prone. I always lose things, (I've already lost about 12 cellphones, whether broken, stolen and/or lost . three of them smart phones).
at least I don't have to feel bad if I lose or break your so called "dumphones".
I used to be very reliant on these phones because I had a very active social life then.(not anymore though) now I just use these phones for calls. I hardly surf on them.

Where I live winters can be tought. Was sleeping outside on winter Mil-sim when we came back I got from weather report it was around -15°C that morning. ^^
Also I live in a capital though there was a grown in Wi-Fi areas (really like the new ones in Trams, but those are few so far) the coverage isn't that much.
I also don't really care about people calling it a dumphone. To me it's a joke :D

For me, I personally don't care if it's "smart" or "dumb". I plan to keep my Atrix 4G as long as I can for two reasons. It has fingerprint security, and it gets the job done. And the job is making phone calls. True, I don't really get many calls, but when I do, it's good service. Plus it was my first smartphone that I got . But I do miss the joy if old flip phones. In fact, I still have some Cingular Razors in my drawer and one of those old Nokia tall phones. You, the ones that everyone had around 2000.

The problems you complain about for smartphones are still present for "dumb phones" as you call them. How are you going to dial 911 with your arms broken? Your reasoning is flawed.

Ib case of my phone it's 4 push side volume change to send emmergency messege to predefinded people/numbers. I am confident I can do that with my tongue :P
EDIT: Not to mention I'm not american. Here we have 155 for medical or 112 for general emergency call.

It's probably easier to interact with a touchscreen with your tongue than actual buttons. Buttons require a significantly larger amount of pressure, usually achieved when you're pressing against something. Without the benefit of your hands, sure you could touch the button with your tongue but could you actually press it? (This is supposing your phone is already out of your pocket/backpack and on the ground, and you don't actually have to retrieve it.)

I know my phone not to mention I practice these things. ^^

Your confidence backed by very little logic is a bit perturbing, but okay. If you say so.

Well if you don't believe me I won't force the issue. Clash of opinions is inevidable in these cases especially with both sides having experience one or another lacks.
