taking advantage of disabilities(prolly not what you think)

I wanted to put this in serious discussion but I don't think its long enough
What do you all think of people with minor disabilities who use that to get what they want? for instance I have aspbergers that pretty much just makes me socially awkward, but in high school I used the hell out of it to get into what classes I wanted even if they were full.
Now I'm a hypocrite, because I don't like it when other people do this, but what do you think?

That all depends on one's view upon morality; it is either wrong/cheating- or just logically using what you've got.
As a strong believer in meritocracy myself, I think it's rather cheap and cowardly.

Not bothered by it. It's a matter of taking advantage of the situation to maximize utility, this is the methodology everyone lives by. If I had an issue with it, I'd opt to protest the system and lobby for changes rather than criticize the individuals.
Why be upset or angry that someone has utilized a flaw or a different approach that nets them a greater benefit than simply being stagnant?

The way to get along in society is to play the game the best way you can. If you have a disability, even if you can function in society, you can use it to your advantage.
Anyone who has anything, has gotten to where they are by taking advantage of whatever they could.
"Greatness is achieved by those who recognize their own unique qualities and build upon them."

Hah, you're an aspie.
I don't like disabilities. They have become things that allow people special privileges, when they're supposed to be things that mean you don't get to have as much of a full life as others.

It's called utilizing your resources. People cheat some of their taxes so that they get a bigger refund. I remember when I went to the world expo and people brought their grandparents so that they wouldn't have to wait 4 hours in a line to look at the exhibits. The world just works like that.

True enough, but in modern society, we're playing on a completely different field. It's not about survival of the fittest, its about who can play the game. When society collapses, nature will sort things out, but for now, we all have to make the best of what we can get.

Not exactly sure what you're saying, but, people with disabilities are people who normally have a disadvantage at playing the game.

I think that's really cheap of people that use their disabilities to avoid some kind of work that they can probably can do without any problem but just don't feel like working because it's tiring or boring. I mean, it's fine when they use it for something that it's impossible to be done with the disability they have but if it's for something that they want to avoid then it's totally unforgivable(IMO). For example my cousin had a difficult surgery last year and it turned out fine(I'm REALLY happy for him) but now a year later he's still using the fact that he takes some pills(apparently he'll have to for all his life) as an excuse not to study(because he's BEEN/IS sick but in reality he's just lazy as hell).

I twisted my ankle at work in June. I walked on it for two weeks because my manager didn't file the paperwork right away and I wasn't able to see a doctor about it. After I insisted he do so, it took another week for the paperwork to be sent into the insurance company so the doctor's visits would be covered. All in all, it was simply a twisted ankle, aggravated by a couple of weeks of it being walked on.
I've been having issues at the workplace since. I've been in a great deal of pain due to this injury and I've had to sit down from time to time to alleviate it. It's a matter of the ankle swelling up. If I did as the doctor wanted, unacceptable to my workplace's rules, I'd elevate my ankle at that point and ice it. Instead I had to make due with sitting down, taking a couple ibuprofen, and waiting for the pain to lessen. The worst was last Tuesday night when I could not put pressure on the ankle at all. It was impossible for me to put pressure on it. Yet, I had to. I had to clean the store, ring customers up, and buck up. I did so. I was finally able to get off it when the next shift came in and I was able to properly elevate the ankle, and ice it. Yet even that only helped so much. I was able to make the long trip back home from work. Flash forward to 3 AM. I have to use the washroom. I cannot put pressure on the ankle. I cannot stand on it at all. I can't. It is so fucking terrible that I cannot even get up to go pee.
I suck it up and go back to bed. I wake up about six hours later and the pain is intense but bearable enough to limp on. It's been getting less and less painful since. To be honest though, it's not a constant pain. When I'm off the ankle for 10+ hours, it doesn't hurt so bad. The biggest problem is the ankle swelling up and causing the pain that way. It swells up the longer I'm on it. The store management doesn't seem to understand that.
I'm seriously depressed over it. I haven't taken advantage of this injury, but for the love of God, what can I do if I need to get off it? I always made sure that my job tasks were done when the next shift came in, yet the management is dead set on punishing me for sitting down. I've had enough of the goddamn bullshit!

I have ADD, but I never use it as an excuse. I'd be too ashamed to use it as a crutch.
However, I went to a college for special kids, and though many succeeded, you can bet your ass quite a few took advantage of teacher permissions not just to work but to slack off.

If it's to gain something unrelated to their disability/illness such as material items then it's pretty sad. But if it's something to benefit them in fighting their disability/illness then they should go for it - however I think it is disgusting how things such as hearing aids and glasses have to be paid for.

Plus its only around $200 or less every year or two... perhaps 3. HIV medication? Thousands upon thousands per year.
Personally, I'm fine with people taking advantage of their resources, until it begins severely harming other people. 80% of America's medical expenses go to treating people who are either severely obese, have heart conditions but refuses to change their lifestyle, and medicade people who think nothing of the price of medicine and a doctor/nurse's time.
And also those welfare people who have lots of children solely to get money for their alcohol. They give a bad name and make life much harder for others in poverty but are doing their best for an honest living.
Best example? Le Octomom. Having 8 kids at once is stupid, and that stunt that she pulled drained an enormous portion of the hospital's budget, possibly lowering the quality of service in other areas of the hospital.

What I meant was I think it is disgusting how people are made to pay for things such as glasses and hearing aids - they should be provided free by the government for people.

Lol I completely misread that. But with the proper medicare plan, you can get glasses(not too stylish) and hearing aids for free.
