The Karate Kid (2010)

Why? It's the basic question I have been trying to answer ever since I found out that they were making this. For quite a while now, hollywood has taken it upon themselves to remake movies, good movies, in order to draw nostalgia out of people and make them fork over money for something they pretty much already watched twenty years ago. I just don't get it. The Karate Kid (The original one, not whatever the fuck this is) was an awesome movie; I mean yeah, it had a distinct 80s feel to it, and I suppose there may be some kids today that simply can no longer relate to it like people in my generation could, but is this really necessary?
It would have been annoying enough for them to make a sequel after all this time, but a complete remake seems a bit much. Naturally, this also means they tweaked a few parts. Daniel is now Dre, because we now have a black kid instead of a white one. As I understand it, he is played by Will Smith's son. A thrill for him, kind of a (crane) kick to the face for the rest of us. I usually don't have a problem with Jackie Chan, but the idea that he thinks he can just replace Mr. Miyagi (he's Mr. Han now, btw) makes me seethe.
I'm not even saying that this will necessarily be a bad movie. If you haven't seen the original and have no idea what it's about, this could be interesting, but I still think that this trend of remakes sucks ass. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I don't see anything wrong with the original at all. I think it's just as good now as it was when it first came out. There is absolutely no need for a remake.
I am very saddened by this.

I'm already disappointed in Chun Long. He's been destroying the career he's built up in just a few disney movies and other of these american crap films.

Ive seen the movies, except for the woman version and I did really like the first one most.
I have only seen trailers of this new one though, so I guess we'll see when its really out what its all about.

I hate hollywoodI second that. This movie looks horrible. I remember seeing the original back as a kid, when I heard there was going to be a remake, I thought to my "ok sure". Then I saw this...uuughhh...wtf did they do?!?! This movie looks like shit, its nothing like the original. The only cool thing about this movie is Jackie Chan, I think he fits the role perfectly.

And why a black kid? Just to make it seem like black people can do something else but shank and miss targets?

I think the problem with the original was that it was a product of the times. Ive tried watching that movie with my younger brother and he says its cheesy and stupid.
I then proceed to hit him in the gut and tell him its not...
But thats the point. I think that a lot of people, even my age, cant relate to it. Honestly, Im all for the remaking of this movie, as long as its well thought out. I think that if this movie is well made, that The Karate Kid can become more of a legacy than just an 80's movie with a few iffy sequels.

I've read a little bit about this movie. Apparently, it was created as a project for Will Smith's son. Also, the movie will probably only be called "The Karate Kid" in America and called "The Kung Fu Kid" everywhere else, since the movie is using kung fu and not the Japanese form, karate. (Or something like that.)
It feels to me that this movie wasn't made out of a desire to make the story more appealing to a younger generation or to do something new. They just said, "What can we do with Will Smith's kid to make him famous?", saw The Karate Kid, and decided to do this.

What the hell!!!! This is the karate kid with kung fu moves? No movie, No. You can't do that, just can't function with something like this.
This is one of many reasons (beside the biggest reason:WHY IN THE HELL ARE THEY MAKING ANOTHER KARATE KID,to promote jaden smith, will smith's son BULLSHIT!!!) why this movie going to blow.

I can see why they would want to remake it so a new generation can watch it. Maybe this will even prompt some kids to go back and watch the original movie.
I'm just interested in seeing if they change the move at the end or not.
and also some Chinese http://www.hulu.com/watch/56637/saturday-night-live-bad-guys-good-conversation

Well I want to go see it now, seems interesting enough after reading some reviews. Even more so after rewatching the old one recently.

My problem with this movie is not the movie itself. As someone who practices Kung-Fu, it really bothers me that most martial arts styles are generalized as "karate" here in the states. I'm sure that practitioners of Karate feel the same way. Even more so, that this movie is pretty much exploiting a name to help it sell. I'm sure the movie is probably really good, and I may end up seeing it, but the whole "karate" kid is going to bug me and I may not enjoy it as much as the average person might.
On top of that, I may get the random person asking "You practice karate?"

Putting aside the name, the movie was really good. Stayed pretty faithful to the original compared to most other remakes and was a really good modernization. The fights esp. were really good. I mean you can't complain about the original since it was made by Americans and didn't have the martial arts cinematography like that from Chinese films. It just gets annoying though watching the old one and seeing how fake the fights were.
