Trust, definitely. A relationship can become very nasty without trust.
I would say lust/sex would come second. I have a hard time imagining a relationship lasting indefinitely without sex.

Can anyone elaborate why trust and open communication are separate?I'll go with my feelings.
well if you go w/ ur feelings what about his/feeling, i dun mean that you sounded like ur selfish and stuff, but think about what other feels. try putting urself in their position, think of what they might feeling!....
Mine would be TRUST! i feel like if there's no trustur relationship is frail and can be broken anytime and give you a hard impact on life in the future, like loosing the feeling of trust because of this situation and stuff, u'll grow lonely!! :((

The single most important part of a relationship is the foundation on which it is built. There has to be a strong mutual trust, and sense of companionship. In other words, you need to first view a person as a trusted friend. It's a bond. You have to bond for the relationship's roots to be strong enough to grow into something beautiful.

I wanted to say trust, but open communication seems to kind of go into that category. . . but without trust and communication a relationship cannot flourish properly and is more likely to fail. Both are essentials!

Trust is the most important, but I think it goes hand-in-hand with open communication... since you need communication to establish trust, but you don't always have trust just because you communicate. So, I still think they're separate parts of the same ultimate 'goal'.

Open communication is the most important, but it tends to be a symptom of trust, so it's kind of both.

Trust and respect.
To me, those are the most important to have a proper relationship. And with those, other important factors come in such as open communication and deeper feelings for each other.

I feel that all of these things can come from some form of open communication.
If you're communicating well then you know how each other feel and whether or not there are concerns with money/sex and such.
Thinking about it, the communication kinda comes from mutual trust...

I think sex is not the most important, but well it´s kinda important to me.
Trust is kind of the most important thing in a relationship, otherwise how can you tell your own secrets?

All the answers in this thread sound so cliché and "textbook". I mean, "Trust" and "Open communication"... which I guess are helpful in a relationship, but wouldn't you need that anyway? I mean, you wouldn't get into a relationship without either, that's just silly bordering on downright stupid.
I'm going to give a bit of a personal answer here, and that that I've got to be able to see them as my best female friend; a girl I can really talk to about anything and everything no matter how disgusting, and vice versa. You know the kind I mean, the girl who's able to make you smile your arse off without even trying and someone you can really open up to. (And just so happen to have strong feelings for each other, and thus nailing each other)
