You can usually just buy the actual prizes from stores in Akihabara. You can even find them being sold at some of the various adult DVD stores. They had some of the Lucky Star Konata and Kagami wedding dress figures for like 1,300 yen.

Did you happen to see the UFO catchers in Ikebukuro? Some of them offer gaming consoles (i.e. 3Ds, XBOX 360, etc.), but it's kinda like a russian roulette kinda thing because you're trying to pick up coupons or something like that. I think they're convertible to points or something like that, but I didn't bother looking into because I'd be sure to burn my money real quick. D:

I'm so ignorant but I need to know! Who are the characters on the... posters in the last picture, lower right area behind the Ore No Imouto and Misaka Mikoto sister figurines?

You spend money in Japan to eat dem good foods bro, seriously.
Or you spend money on a crane game to get food, only in Japan have I found crane games where your prize is ice cream.
Did you try the super crazy 5v5 gundam war games? I was too scared personally seeing as I can't read that well.
The Gundam PODs are fun. Expensive but really fun. I can't remember my rank on them. Then there's the Gundam VS games, but I don't know the button combos for those. Unlike the PS2 games, where you have more buttons, the VS games only have 3. They use to have the Gundam Card Builder games, but those died out a while ago. I still have stacks of cards for that game. I kept my Sayla card, as her card was hella expensive in reseller stores. I got it out of one of the 1000 yen packs.

The UFO catchers in Akiba suck...a lot. If you look at the metal ends on the arms, you can see that they bend them down a little. It's so they more easily drop what they are picking up. If you want to easily win, go to Kiyose or Tokorozawa. I've won so many figured from either of those locations. I'd win on my 1st or 2nd try. Akiba, you'll easily spend 1000 yen to get a single prize. The larger it is, the more you'll spend. It'd be easier to go to the Yellow Submarine building and just buy what you wanted to win. Sometimes, cheaper.I beg to differ sir, I went to japan last dec and my friends and I we cleaned out some of the UFO catchers in Akiba. So we didn't have any issues when we played them. I got the Asuka and Mari in the picture, a Giant Rilakuma Plush, 2 Eva plushes, 4 of the K-on Maid Figures, and a bunch of other small things to name a few.
All were under 300 yen for each.

Some of the places are "rigged" a bit worse than the others in that the staff make it exceedingly difficult to win, while others almost seem to do whatever they can to help you win. There have been a few instances where I'll win a prize and a staff member has to set up another prize item, however they will set it up in such a way that the item is literally falling into the goal area and just needs to get knocked over by the crane.
If you spend some time walking around and checking out each place, and realize that you simply can't win (without dumb luck) on some machines then you should be OK.

Unless they got hit recently for making it almost impossible to win, I can't see them changing their ways. The ways I see them rig is is to bend the claw tips, put the boxes diagonally, or not punch out the holes on the side.
Only place that was easy to win was down the alleyway near the overpass. Right inbetween the cellphone shop and Club Sega. You walk down past a pachinko shop (on the right) and go maybe another 30-40 ft from there. It was on the right. They didn't use claws. They used the clear pvc pipes that came down. You had to make it go into a hole and push down a plunger, then the prize would drop. That or the small clear shelf that would move forward. You had to make it go into an open spot and push the prize in and it'd fall down.

The best thing about those machines is that you can actually win the prize inside. They aren't rigged to be impossible. I won 3 awesome pillow things in them and each time I won they would refill the machine to be ridiculously easy to win.

No lie, I won a full maid outfit in a UFO catcher on my first try!
Among other things I've managed: Evangelion NERV wristwatch, Dragon Ball Senzu-bean plush container.
