Virtual Reality Gaming - Will it happen soon?
That's the question that's been bugging me since I started watching Sword Art Online. When I was searching around for some fun articles to read about VR - I found an interesting project that made me really excited and felt that maybe the time of Virtual Reality Gaming is finally here.
This are the link to the one I am talking about. Oculus Rift
At first I was sceptical and I am still. However the project seems really legit. Not only do they have Doom 3 BFG ready for Oculus but they also plan to release another Oculus ready game called Hawken which I am about to enlist (By the time you read this I already am enlisted).
So seeing this is really heighten my excitement for Virtual Reality gaming. It's too bad though that there only giving Dev kits. But this means that developers now have this awesome kit and are all finding ways to make their respective games Oculus ready. So lets say 4-5 years from now (18/09/2012) and we might be playing on Virtual worlds.
P.S If you do see a player named Kirito Gremory or SkyRobo1 - that would be me so say hi when you see me in the Virtual world.

If this was in IB, ma only reply would have been "ALL MY WANT"
Anyways, after seeing their intro video, I must say, I'm really impressed. What did we see even a few (lets say 5) years ago ? Those huge bulky things that didn't have motion trecking, their graphics looked crappy and you'd get a bad headache after using them for an extended time.
And what do we get now ? Oculus. It's lighweight, probably will be a lot cheaper then it's ugly big brothers and it looks darn comortable.
I say gamers like me and probably a lot of you other Fakkuzas too needs to start to save up money. (even if they say it's cheap, everything is relative. + it's a kind of law; when stuff is new, it costs way more when it has been out for some time)

I wish the this thread would have been in Random.
Anyways. I love the idea. Although, I'm still looking into what consequences you would have from your eyes being that close to a "monitor".
Other than that I would love to buy it (If I had the money.)

I would like to point out that the Oculus is not VR tech(despite what anyone says), it is AR or augmented reality tech. All you have is a head set with tv's in it basically, all be it much more complicated than that. VR like in SAO is far, far from where we are now, I'm going to say at least 20-30 years before we even get close to being able to. The dangers of VR would be enormous, this would be the down side of developing the tech. You would have to make sure that there is no way the product could cause harm to anyone, but I could see some huge advantages to having it in place. Most of these besides games (since we all know games are the most important thing right?) would be schooling or doing online meetings where providing visual information would be necessary.
On the other hand we will have AR very soon, you put a camera in the oculus and a HUD and you can view picture in picture. So things like having a map up while walking to your destination are a real possibility, driving would still be dangerous. You put a cell phone in it and you could have a face to face conversation with someone, you make it small enough or an implant you could have things like what people in Accel World have. Basically a computer screen only you can see. When AR gets advanced enough and other techs are in place you could get virtual augmented reality or VAR, with this you could get virtual things that you and others can see as long as they also have the AR tech to be able to see these things. DennÅ Coil is a perfect example of this. I really hope that by the time AR and the likes are mainstream I'm not a old man who has no interest in them.

I foresee that this will cause nausea to the players and lose the ability to differentiate fantasy with reality, though I have high hopes for this one.

doomsayer hit it on the head with this one. That Ocular thing is just a big TV wrapped around your face essentially. To be honest, it looks sort of like the headsets used in .hack; you know, that old anime about a VR game that wasn't SAO. Anyway, while it does look pretty neat, yeah, I think as well that it could be disorienting. Another initial downside will be software. There won't be many games to actually play since it's new technology. This problem will solve itself with time, but we ain't getting any younger.

that thing aint nothing like SAO
As long as you stay concision about your surroundings it wont be VR.
as i understand it VR is when every input from real reality is intercepted and replaced whit virtual one.
So you cant touch or smell something that's not part of game. and you cant move your hands or feet since said output will go to game device.
However as SAO pointed out, we better have some good security so some crazy guy wont go jacking our brainzz.
Maybe in 10+ years we will have first prototypes that will be cheap for public use, 20 for full game systems whit support and lots of games, maybe even more.

I was thinking that as well! .hack made you think about all the negatives to VR. a lot of bad things bad things were likely to happen in the world that would have an actually effect on people. like dieing or comas.
rhis thing also reminds me of the sims! theres a tech toy you can get thats also labled as a "vr simulation" but it looms exactly like that and your sim will put it on and wonder around doing things.
I however do thing that AR gaming is interesting. doom games terrify me so I doubt I would engage I a game like that as in my first go but Its an interesting step for entertaiment tech and I lime how it is being marketed for the average person. im sure it will take a while but I am confident in these.

Haha, glad someone else knows .hack. Although, this concept isn't really new; I played Digimon World 3 for the PS1 and that had a VR game, though players got in pod things. In the game, people got stuck because of an error and they would have gone into comas had they unplugged and all that shit. So, really, SAO is just the one that got popular. With all these different fantasies doing it, it will probably be attempted ASAP.

no it really isnt a new thing and I remember Digimon world 3 I still have it lying around Im sure! also .hack did become fairly popular back in the day. when .hack/sign was first released it was on TV and I know a great deal of people who loved it. I think why a series like SAO is more popular though is possibly because its a little less confussing. .hack has really become an entier franchise with video games, anime, manga, novels and card games and to fully understand everything that happens in the world you need to be atleast familliar with everything they have.
another AR/VR concept I really liked was Gamer... Im not too fond of the film it self but how it makes you think a lot about the ethical problems a game run culture could have.

Spoiler:
This is an augmented reality headset. The Oculus is a virtual reality headset.
Virtual
Not physically existing as such but made by software to appear to do so: "virtual images".
Augmented
Make (something) greater by adding to it; increase: "he augmented his income by painting houses".
Reality
The world or the state of things as they actually exist, as opposed to an idealistic or notional idea of them: "he refuses to face reality".

Virtual reality gaming. When it happens, it will be awesome, as long as there are certain parameters in place. One, is it like a suit you wear in a rig, or jack in like matrix? If it is suit that is going to take a long time, but if you do matrix, then you have protocols, like internet. If the user tried to access the internet while jacked in, the dump of info would kill them. If they died in the game, what would happen in real life? What if they were hacked? Can you imagine what would happen? The person could be reprogrammed, or wiped clean. Then what?

~~~ This is an Update ~~~
By now we all know that the Occulus Rift is an incomplete VR with only head rotation. However recently I found a kickstarter that might change all that
Introducing
Atlas Virtual Reality
So with both Occulus Rift and hopefully Atlas (If it gets its targeted funding) what do you think of the future of VR gaming and other things VR might be use on?
