we have a long ways to go but ideally if we can get to something like .hack(loved the series wished there were more after g.u) or SAO minus all the dying then i would definitly be all over that especially if its reasonably priced

ATLAS is definitely NOT Virtual Reality but an AR one; I can't believe the developers actually made such a fundamental mistake.
Oculus Rift however IS a VR equipment, albeit covering only for sight and hearing (and even those were actually incomplete).
A true VR experience would be one that allows a person to be almost completely disconnected from the real world and become completely immersed in the virtual one. An 'ideal' VR experience would be immersion into a virtual world that's so complete that your body and the real world would not interfere with the immersion in any way. It'd be like in SAO where your brain signals were intercepted, analyzed and converted into input signals redirected into the virtual world and your avatar instead of your own real body. You would actually live as an entity in the virtual world and unless someone/thing pulls the plug (which could translate to either internet connectivity, power source, software/hardware failure etc) you are literally living in that other world.
And just like any ideals are, the above sci-fi equipment would never exist. Even if we set aside realistic estimations about the ridiculous costs or limitations of physical materials (it's not even a problem of whether we can reach the technology, it's that we literally CAN'T build it with the legalized Earthen resources, and unless you're willing to connect a living, pulsing ORGAN to your brain, which is one of the few realistic ways to achieve the stated level of immersions, it simply won't happen. Might as well take LSD then, at least it's far less disgusting), there's still some very real ethical problems such as privacy issues and freedom in general.
As I've said before, to actually reach a state of VR immersion like in SAO, the VR equipment must be capable of analyzing and translating your brain signals accurately, while preventing a portion of them from travelling to the rest of your body. Let's not talk about how this machine is going to differentiate and intercept the right brain signal without accidentally killing you, but if it could achieve such control then this means the technology is capable of reading your very thoughts - or at least most of them, and even that would be more than enough - and if it could do that it could very possibly warp and manipulate your very mind. What we've seen in the first Arc of SAO novel is an UNDERSTATEMENT of what the technology can do, and the second Arc addresses the actual danger VERY mildly in the form of a perverted and incompetent villain scientist.
When that happens you're no better than a zombie, and at least a flesh eater was allowed to follow its primal impulses and devour meat, while an 'ideal' VR-immersed person practically relinquishes every possible control of their body, their very mind's freedom, and even life itself. Seriously, the masterminds behind this VR equipment would be able to kill you with a single button tap. That is if your brain hasn't fried due to measly blackouts or if your friendly neighborhood ISPs suddenly fuck up.
The truth of the 'ideal' VR experience is to forsake your life in reality and migrate into another life in a virtual world. In a sense, the moment you dive into that other world you can be considered as dead already in real life.
While it's never impossible for such a technology to be built - as mankind proved again and again how they triumph over seemingly impossible feats - seriously, you should be doing your very best to PREVENT it from happening ever publicly. I'd settle with just realistic visual and audio, thank you, and thank god that I'm still feeling my own body and the real world around me. The day I relinquish these for the sake of 'living' in a virtual world would be the same day I commit suicide.

Soon? No. The technology simply isn't there at that level. In order to do something like SAO, a brain-machine interface would be needed, it couldn't be done like they did it. More like how it is in Accel World (despite it being taking place later, chronologically).
Experimentation on this for blind and deaf people has started, but it is still in the experimental stage. Maybe in 30-40 years, 20 at the EARLIEST, but what I would call soon? No.
Now if it is a question of whether it will catch on once the technology is there, I am sure it will, at least among the younger (at that point) generations.

Scratch the Atlas..I found a better one where you don't need a big area to actually utilise it properly..It's called Omni So far it looks promising and it adds the bonus of fitness..

I feel the Rift is certainly a step in the right direction. But full VR might not come so soon. In the 70s it was believed we should have hover cars by now but the biggest p̶i̶e̶c̶e̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶s̶h̶i̶t̶ step forward we've made is electric cars. I think it will come, just not soon.

I define VR gaming as more of a Sword Art Online kind of thing where you are actually inside the game. I am definitely getting an Oculus though, there are so many games that would be amazing with it. But with the Oculus you are still sitting at a keyboard or using a controller and that just doesn't mean virtual reality to me.

I'm looking towards Sony, and a little bit more towards Micro, as of now. I can only imagine a add cluttered filled experience full of distractions trying to drag you away from gaming to facebook or other social media's (such as the social media button on the PS4 remote). Worst yet, more spying and selling off your activities to third parties.
Facebook bought this because they saw a profit in it, I don't like what they do to things they see profit out of so my expectations are...

I understand that the gamers feel a little dissapointed since they donated and had high expectations from the Occulus Rift but at the same time nobody in their right mind would refuse FB's offer. I mean come on, 2 fucking billion out of a what, 200k project?
Personally I'm still not that excited about virtual reality. It will be interesting to see how Sony's product will do in the next years.

On one hand, if Palmer can make good on his promises, then we'll be getting the Rift sooner than expected, at a cheaper price, with no interference from Facebook.

Should keep in mind that a good majority of that 2 billion is in facebook stock.

I agree that we're pretty far off from VR because of the "nerve aspect" involved, like in SAO.
That would require all your senses to be engaged, so it's no longer your eyes that's doing the visual work; it's your brain.
As far as I'm concerned, the closest we'll get to it is now something like the Oculus Rift, that's for sure. It's certainly a step up from a monitor.

VR gaming right now is like 3-D gaming. Neither really is at a point that it will have everyone flock to it yet. Who knows what 10-15 years from now what gaming will be like, but that is the part of living and seeing what new advances are made.

Virtual Reality sounds exciting and promising, but to be honest, even if it came out in the near future I wouldn't be playing it. Obviously, I haven't experienced virtual reality, but I feel that it would be more exciting and fun to press my mechanical key switches and move my light weight mouse as I play a game that I enjoy.

There is A wireless brain implant that allows interactions with the technology in the surrounding enviorment and tech that translate thoughts into speech through brain scaning, ibrain Stephen Hawking is currently testing a number of technology in this field apparently.
If this kind of technology becomes prominent in the near future, all you have to do is create a helm, with a VR visor, that reads brain inputs as user control inputs, you'd even be able to speak within the game without having to do it aloud.
Maybe a SAO, though I prefer dotHack (seeing it as the predecessor), future is plausible in the very near (under 10 years) future.

I went to Japan Anime 2014 last weekend and Sony had their headset thing at a booth available for demo, so I got to try it after waiting in line. It was cool and all, but it was essentially just a TV really close to your eyes because it didn't cover 180 degrees of your vision. In other words, there was still black space in your peripheral vision so the immersion was somewhat ruined. It also gave me a headache. I took a video of someone else using it and a TV monitor displaying what they were seeing so you can get an idea of what it's like, but I'm too lazy to upload it right now because it's on my phone.
I'm sure in the future this technology will be refined, but for now it's a little meh in my opinion.
