AH WAT? Well I suppose LG might have gotten their act together and actually pulled it off without making a shitty phone... But I don't have a lot of faith in the matter.

some very good app list for me are:
dolphin browser HD (best web browser i think, it can put some add on as well)
handcent sms (basically an app that lets you edit a lot of things in sms settings)
alarm clock plus (as the name suggested, alarm clock, a very good one)
laputa (if you want to read some free books)
meridian player (really good music player for me as it plays almost any file format)
rockplayer (this is a video player which plays almost all format including MKV as well, not sure would it lag for you, but try it since it is free :) )
ximonic (a very powerful app, you can search and play the music you want via streaming and the best part is that it almost always have the song, the problem is that it only works about 80% of time, but it is magic when it works)
msn talk is a must if you like using msn
ES file explorer (very useful because it means you can download installation files onto your phone while browsing with your phone and you can immediately install it right away, without needing the help of computer)
that's all I have at the moment and they are strongly recommended by me :)
I tried to tidy it up a bit, hope it isn't too much of a mess to see what is what

the more user friendly and fun would be android based phone. depending how good you want it to be, you can have to try the more entry level like htc wild fire or more expensive one like the htc desire z (I want that one!)

Well if your not looking for anything fancy and just want a good phone, the HTC Wildfire is a good cheap android phone for about $299 Australian dollars (which [Off topic warning] is pretty much on par with the American dollar these days ^_^ Cheaper games for us! Sick of paying $100+ for a new 360 game >_< ).
Also, yes, the desire z looks awesome, an android phone with a qwerty keyboard :D was thinking about getting it, but alas the price is so high T_T
In terms of power though, I'm pretty sure the most powerful phones would be the HTC Desire HD and the Samsung Galaxy S, so you can't go wrong with them ;) (the desire hd has a 1.2GHz cpu but the Galaxy S can apparently do three times the amount of triangles with only a 1GHz cpu)

you are living in Australia? going slightly off topic, any good ISP for gaming in Melbourne suburb? I am gonna move out with my friends soon and the internet here is so bad (sorry, I have to say it because I never went to a place where internet has data cap before) and the speed is just bad..
@topic
other than wild fire, HTC legend is a great choice too. If your home country currency is strong, go and buy online because it will be sim-unlocked and most likely to be much cheaper than getting the phone with a price plan

... No of these phones interst the void...
The Windows Phone 7 Samsung Focus* intrest me as a smartphone... Fuck those other ones.
* Only avaliable at AT&T
I wish to put in a vote for that, and I hate Verison (This state is crawling with those Envy fucking tacos) and I hate Droids (named after robot... so stupid)

Never used htc before. Can anyone tell me more details about htc, and in particular, its interface, htc sense, and what the difference is from other android devices?
I'm getting an upgrade, and my choice falls into either Samsung Galaxy S (1st, their 4Gs are out of my pocket for now) and htc's 4G lineups, specifically AT&T's Captivate and Inspire, respectively.
