why do people drink alcohol?

I frankly do not drink alcohol. I do not really see any good reason to do so. yet you see others drink alcohol very frequently.
I do not really understand why does others drink alcohol. so I ask you all. what good would you get from drinking alcohol? and please do not respond that it brings pleasure to you because I do not believe that at all.

For me its about loosing control, same with drugs and such. And from others it sound like there just defending themselves as they lost to peer-pressure.
Waste of money, for a shitty drink, and a lame excuse to say you had a good night.
When its older poeple, who don't get that much of a buzz from it, i can halfly understand, doing it as a socail event, but theres got to be something better than drinking crap, Saying that it 'loosens you up' seem like they can't break the ice any other way.
Not alot of good comes from it and I believe it to be only a crutch for poeple who can't stand (metaphorically of course.)

Because it is liquid courage to do the unthinkable and the outrageous!
Also to do stupid human tricks you couldn't do while sober.

alot of people do it just to have fun, other people do it to try and erase bad memories from their lives...it all depends on the type of person some are.

relaxant, I find it easier to sleep after drinking. Other than that, it's for social purpose This.
Also, I hate it when the ones such as us who only drink a little get compared to the ones that drink every day of the week nearly.

The side of yourself you don't know of might awaken when drunk.alcahol does lower inhabitions, and can bring out a persons true or hidden personality. or exagerate a normal personality trait(jerk becomes asshole, flirt becomes slut). i'm a thief, so i get sticky fingers when i drink too much.
i don't trust anyone who won't get drunk once in a while.
to all who haven't tried(or only a little), rather than speculate on reasons why or why not to drink, go out and try it yourself. with out personal expieriance as a referance, your opinion means very little.
any who think they are better than others because they don't drink are arrogant fools. they'd probably just be an ass who gets punched when drunk anyway.

Many people feel shy, awkward, or afraid in certain situations. It can be a social situation, such as a party full of strangers, or it can be something more formal such as while at work.
Alcohol naturally causes people to lose their inhibitions, feel more relaxed, and become seemingly more outgoing or less shy temporarily. (Temporarily is the key to be stressed – it can cause more problems after prolonged use) Rather than dealing with problems such as overcoming shyness or other issues, alcohol is used as a temporary solution to deal with awkward situations.

Rather than try to worry about some external reason for drinking alcoholic beverages, wouldn't it be more logical to assume that some people just either like the taste of it or get peer pressured? I mean.. I'm not sure how many of you smelled pure alcohol but it smells pretty good. Almost sort of sweet even. I think that a lot of fans of bitter/sweet stuff would enjoy the taste of alcohol.
I myself love fruity drinks and sweet wines. As long as it's sweet I'll drink it. Passoa is one of my favourite mixing drinks.

It depends. Some enjoy what the drink does to them, either allowing them to relax, or boost their social bravery. Others might do it for the aesthetic only, in which case you could also say it allows them to feel good.
But really, it comes down to the universal. They drink because they like it, same as people who drink milk, or drink tea.

[font=verdana][color=green]You know...the OP of this thread is highly judgmental.
I really, really hate it when people, like them, try to explain all actions in ways of the person's mindset. For example, they drink alcohol "to escape their own problems" or "to overcome social anxiety", which can both be reasons why, but they totally disregard the fact that people drink alcohol because it gives them pleasure. It's highly offensive to people, like me, who drink alcohol because it tastes nice and it pleases me to drink alcohol.
I don't care what the OP says. I don't care if he doesn't believe people drink alcohol because it gives them pleasure. All I care about is that, after a long, hot day, I have a can of cold beer in the fridge to help me relax. Due to the alcohol in the drink, it has a certain crispness that soft drinks just don't have.
Why do people get addicted to alcohol? Because it brings them pleasure. Don't try to complicate this topic.

It brings pleasure. You can't understand an experience unless you take part in it.
It is also a part of night life, nobody likes that random sober person in a party.

I drink because it makes me more articulate.
Though according to Waar it makes me constantly try to prove I'm not drunk.

For me, just something to enjoy, whiling away a lazy afternoon.
Or on the cold days, a flask of whiskey to keep me going.
It's also a social and celebratory thing.
For those who drink to get drunk, and use it as liquid courage- I personally find that kinda dumb.
Don't know about others- but I'm perfectly capable of being a complete arse while sober.
