why do people drink alcohol?

Now that I'm actually Sober to an extent, and have actually thought about this a bit, I agree with SamRavster(your avitar matches the tone the tone I get from your post perfectly) about how the OP is highly judgmental. I don't drink for the hell of it, or to get drunk. Most of the time when I'm out with friend's I'm considered the sober one. it helps me relax, after work, and keeps the party going when we go out, or are hanging around home. The way I see it, before you make assumptions you should get fucked up one time, and then decide do you want to do it again or never again. That was me, It's good to know your limits, and what level of inebriation your are comfortable with reaching.
Though I do agree with the OP because yes you can have fun and get pleasure from other things than drinking, but then I still believe you can get pleasure from drinking. I enjoy a nice long soak in the tub with a glass of wine, and so forth.
To me it's not about getting shit faced it's about getting comfortable, with new situations, and new experiences, it's not about getting so drunk, that I don't remember what I did, It's about getting myself to let go and say what they hell with it.

Wikipedia: Ethanol inhibits the ability of glutamate to open the cation channel associated with the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) subtype of glutamate receptors. Stimulated areas include the cortex, hippocampus and nucleus accumbens, which are responsible for thinking and pleasure seeking. Another one of alcohol's agreeable effects is body relaxation, possibly caused by neurons transmitting electrical signals in an alpha waves-pattern; such waves are observed (with the aid of EEGs) when the body is relaxed.

I drink sake with friends when I get Japanese food, or have champagne on nice occasions. I'm not much for other booze, but some with a meal can be nice.
I had some sparkling sake last night with my pals and watched Tiger and Bunny lol...

I have never been drunk, I've only tried alcohol a few times and hated it. I don't need to drink.

people drink alcohol because marijuana is illegal...pff >.> If you say so guy lol I write this as I toss back an OE, watch that 70's show and blaze my buddah. People drink and smoke weed everyday because it makes em feel relaxed. I used to be like you, mochure.. but once you drink the drink with out a shitty hangover, you'll see how you'll feel chillin'. It's all about knowing your limit. =D

Is... Is this really a question?
Cant tell if joking, or just an imbecile looking for an opportunity to be self righteous...
Anyway. To answer the question. I drink because my standard day to day condition is to be knurd. Have you ever been knurd? No. I don't think you have, or you wouldn't wonder why people get drunk.

people drink alcohol because marijuana is illegal...This is off-topic, but I dont get that logic, "I cant smoke weed so I drink alcohol". The effects of alcohol and weed are totally different. I enjoy my weed very much, but I dont drink at all nowdays. Actually the last time I drank was 8 years ago. I realized that it really wasnt that fun for me + I hate puking up, I really really hate it. So once I threw up when I was drunk, I couldnt drink that stuff anymore. I tried, but I cant swallow it (and the same goes for many other things I've thrown up aswell).
But even tho I dont enjoy drinking, I dont think that no one can enjoy it. People just enjoy different things and we dont understand all of them, because we personally dont enjoy them.

Mostly just for fun or to take my mind off something. Me being drunk is actually quite fun and I enjoy it without having to do extremely stupid things that would put myself in danger. Besides I drink with trustworthy friends so it just adds on to our shenanigans. ^^

[font=verdana][color=green]You know...the OP of this thread is highly judgmental. I really, really hate it when people, like them, try to explain all actions in ways of the person's mindset. For example, they drink alcohol "to escape their own problems" or "to overcome social anxiety", which can both be reasons why, but they totally disregard the fact that people drink alcohol because it gives them pleasure. It's highly offensive to people, like me, who drink alcohol because it tastes nice and it pleases me to drink alcohol.
I don't care what the OP says. I don't care if he doesn't believe people drink alcohol because it gives them pleasure. All I care about is that, after a long, hot day, I have a can of cold beer in the fridge to help me relax. Due to the alcohol in the drink, it has a certain crispness that soft drinks just don't have.
Why do people get addicted to alcohol? Because it brings them pleasure. Don't try to complicate this topic.

My bro here got it so perfect so I'm just gonna quote him.
