I was playing Modern Warfare 2 with a friend when I decided to quit early for the night. He asked why and I said my luck was bad and I was getting out skilled and it was no fun losing all day. Of course he thought I was being childish and stupid, but I wasn't trying to be.
We've all been told winning isn't everything, but winning isn't bad either. I've never believed that winning/succeeding should have such a negative connotation. Going back with the video games, sometimes you just have to win to have fun. Is it so wrong to want to win sometimes?
Yes, the spirit of the game and having fun is what matters, but it is not wrong to want to win sometimes and to not have fun because you are consecutively losing.
I just hate that people are called sore losers automatically because they leave because they do not win. Sometimes it is simply a real downer to lose so many times. Is it really right to berate someone for that?
Am I the only one that thinks this way?

Sorry if it may be sounds offending ..
Here you go .. for my definition about what is sore loser at gamer world is the one who doesn't have any ball to fight/play until the end ..
Leaving while the game still taking place .. is as same as insulting other player who take it seriously ..
OK, you losing all day , but at least you must respect the other player by playing until end ..
And like you said, Winning isn't everything, but it's still relevant
We fight for win, we play for win .. i never heard that people play/fight because they want to lose ..
We think competitive because we want to win ... i think that sums it all

I used to think that way too, up until I started playing games competitively online about four years ago. Winning is everything! Fuck the "spirit of the game" or "just having fun". That shit was only invented to keep little kids from taunting each other to suicide after constantly being picked on in Phys Ed. Either get in or get out, because no one is going to feel sorry for your loser ass if you leave half-way through a match.

Winning is definitely why you play. It's absurd to play a competitive game and then claim to be playing not to win, or not playing to win. However, this is completely different from being a sore loser.
Sore losers bitch when they lose, or claim that anyone who beats them cheated. They go home and take the ball. They do what they can to take the win away from the winner by making everyone miserable. Most of all they have an inflated sense of entitlement.
If you don't do that, you're not a sore loser, you're playing to win. It'd be absurd to call someone a sore loser for quitting between games after a loss. Does that mean that you're obligated to quit only after you win? What constitutes a win? First place? What if you're a bad player? That means you can never leave without being a "sore loser" because you never top the charts.
I say win gracefully and lose gracefully. Always be civil and courteous, but play to win or don't play. And if you're not having fun, you always have the right to leave as long as your leaving does not ruin the game for others. And even then, you're not necessarily obligated to stay.
Edit: I want to add that cheating also makes you a sore loser. And tearing someone down when they lose makes you a sore winner. Again, be courteous.

well to me if you leave during a game, thats just your right to leave the game and not play anymore.I wont call you a sore loser for that.We all have our days where we own or get owned.Just that dont make a habit out of it,like after getting killed once you leave.
Competitive-ness and the desire to win will get into some people to the point they wont see the fun and sees winning as the ultimate goal.I have been with friends who took games seriously and only cared to win that they got really pissed when I and the rest of my friends didnt perform.
I for one play only for fun.A win in games is like winning an argument on the internet. The feeling is only for a while and easily taken away when you lose the next game lol.
Winning is good, but when you play with friends, you dont want to win all the time as this will make them not play with you anymore and you get big headed.Winning in moderation is alot better. After all playing with friends and winning/losing and having fun along the way beats winning by itself

I can safely admit I've never quit in the middle of a match because my team is losing or because my spread is negative. However, I will admit at times I do get angry because I feel like it was a cheap death and I've played the "lag" card a few too many times when there is no way all of them could have been lag related.

its good etiquette to leave a game after the match is over.
to some score is all that matters. i see that's not how it is for you. you seem to be fed up with losing a lot. and that's not childish at all. its your choice, its your friend who is childish for giving you a hard time about it.
i don't like losing much either. but i tend to play just for fun. but dying 10 times and getting no kills (because they kill you right where you re-spawn) makes me feel like shit. i know its just good strategy but... players don't think about how others feel while playing.. that's a simple truth

                        I play stuff to win.
My example would be pool (Billiards) as I play in a few small leagues, and intend to join the larger ones once I'm of age (Gotta be 21)
I get upset when I shoot poorly, or miss shots I've made in the past, even if they're difficult. And people tell me to calm down, but I ignore them. I play to win, if I keep making stupid mistakes, I can't win. Thus I get annoyed if I do bad.
The example is really relevant anywhere. Try to do your best, and if it wasn't good enough, then you need more practice.

I rarely play competitive games in the first place... and when I do, I don't take winning that seriously.
Sure, it's nice to be ranked first or second, but I mainly play them to enjoy myself - I mean, games are meant to be enjoyed, are they? But then again, I mainly play death match free-for-all style games most of the time, like Half-Life Death Match (1 and 2) or Unreal Tournament. I just go crazy there, having a good time, spilling some guts...
Only thing that riles me up are those arrogant assholes that insult people as noobs and say 'u cant touch me bitch!!' while all they do is toss energy balls at you.

Reminds me of PvP on WoW. i played in a lop sided battle group. near constant crushing defeat. so many children QQing about losing. i didn't mind so much, as long as i got some kills. the only time it bothers me is when i get camped and killed right after spawning.
i often conceed in arguments with stuborn people who deny logic, or just want to argue for the sake of arguing. but in those cases, i count my 'surrender' as a win. similar to the sun tsu style of maneuver warfare.

I don't think there's anything childish about it so as long you don't react like that in every match you play in. (or anything else that involves winning and losing.)

That usually happens to me when I'm playing Magic with my friends. They all have been playing for well over 3+ years while I have been playing for about a month. Every time we do a draft, I build [according to my friends] a very solid deck that runs well, albeit a few too many Lands. So I go into the game with alot of confidence that I can hold my own against them. But experience outweighs the ability to build good decks cause even though I do just that, my inexperience shows when I play cards without paying attention to what's out on the field and I get my ass handed to me on a golden platter EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I did win a game last night against one of the vets, but that victory was short lived as it was a best 2 out of 3, where he won the first game, I won second, and he won third.
TL;DR- Losing sucks donkey dick. Winning is the bees knees.

Sometimes you just dont "feel" the game and its better to call it a night, Shame people you call friends get so bent out of shape because you simply dont want to play anymore... I just say im gonna watch a film or something and that im bored. Any bullshit excuse will work on them, Makes it easier for everyone to accept. (Ive learned to NEVER say im quitting because im not playing well and losing hard)
If you dont feel like playing you simply dont feel like playing, Its not like your taking your fucking Football home and spoiling it for everyone else, If your buddies want to keep playing then Rock on!!
I always play to win, Nobody plays to lose, But I stick around untill the rounds finished before quitting or if all my friends back out first leaving me twisting in the wind then ill backup. (Either one)

I let out a small laugh when I get killed in MW2. Still fun, I actually think it's more fun when your losing. It makes me actually think about the game instead of just doing the same old thing for the win. Seems I'm the only one who thinks this as I can get my ass handed to me for 5 games and then I kick the whole teams ass in one game and they all seem to leave the game after or during the match.
