Kind of Important
A ray of Tsunlight.
No particular order.
Scar Symmetry
Woe of Tyrants
Sybreed
Solution .45
Fear Factory
Lamb of God
Nile
Dark Tranquility
Swallow the Sun
Soilwork
Metallica (naturally)
With the exception of Metallica, all of those are either Melodic Death Metal, Technical Death Metal, Doom Metal, or Industrial Metal. Some are a mix of two or more.
As for reasoning? Hell I dunno. I don't listen to that kind of metal simply because it annoys or confuses some people, I just love the way it sounds. Double-Bassing, growling vocals (Clean as well) Amazingly complex guitar riffs. Shit, I don't understand why everyone doesn't like it.

woah, I'm surprised this thread didn't go necro.
Skimming over every list, I think Queen are turning out to be the common denominator here
xD

Yep, gotta love death metal. On the other hand, I don't favor the stuff that's too technical and complex - makes it hard to concentrate on work, sometimes. That's probably why deathgrind far outweighs other kinds of death metal in my collection. For me, it has the right mix of steady beat, screaming and growling, and complexity.

Some of my favorite bands, in no particular order:
- Blink 182: I grew up to their songs, I think they're all I listened to back in Junior High. Their quirky humor on-stage is also a plus. Seeing Mark play was a deciding factor for me to pick up bass. Haven't put it down since.
- Boys Night Out: I just love the guitar riffs and bass lines, pretty catchy tunes too. Definitely not your standard emo/post-hardcore fare. Dave Costa's playing style is a huge influence in my playing style.
- Bright Eyes: Songs to cry my eyes out.
- Calabrese: People keep comparing them to The Misfits, although personally I think they're quite different. Their songs are simple, but it's pretty good. The consistent horror theme is a nice touch.
- Converge: Almost all of their songs are my cathartic release.
- Husker Du: Zen Arcade, enough said. The first hardcore band to release a concept album, in the 80s to boot.
- Taking Back Sunday: They were awesome for the first two albums. Adam Lazarra's vocals really stands out in a good way. Kinda went downhill after that, but still okay.
- Alexisonfire: Two guitarists that can shred, plus a nice harmony of three vocals. I like the way they structure their songs. Chris Steele kicks ass.
- Up In The Sky: My own band. Alternative rock with an ethnic, World Music touch. Expect an EP soon.
I think that's all I can think of for now.

Elvenking - For oh so many reasons... I love their diversity, the vocalist is awesome, every member impresses me in some way on every album, and the lyrics are most always great in some way. They never make the song song/album twice.
Crush 40 - They are practically the perfect band for me, even though they aren't my number one. The guitars, drums and vocals all go so perfectly together for my taste, and they are a one of a kind.
Ayreon - Incredibly deep, all albums come together as a continuing story. He also always use different vocalists and musicians for every album.
The 69 Eyes - Gothic Rock 'N' Roll. The older albums are so frickin' catchy, and really dark in their own way. The newer albums are really heavy on guitars, but still with a rock 'n' roll feel.
HIM - Because they are different? I can't say why I like these guys, I just do.
Porcupine Tree - Except for the name? They are just overall great musicians and composers.
My Dying Bride - Our feelings are mutual. Nah, not really, but I love the atmosphere in their music, and the lyrics are always so clever.
Draconian - Same as My Dying Bride. The atmosphere. Their music is also so original, I still haven't found anyone like them.
Hypocrisy - Peter Tägtgren is the best harsh vocalist ever. And their melodies and guitar riffs are... I can't explain. They are just plain awesome.
Anathema - Nice and comfortable, dark and moody. Catchy and whatever other thing I can say about them.
Opeth - Barely ever listen to 'em, but they are still grrrrreeeeaaaat! Awesome vocals, awesome atmosphere, awesome diversity and progression.
Evoken - Brutal! -ly slow and heavy. Really emotional band.
Uaral - Original as frickin' hell, depressive and the deepest growls I have ever heard.
Internal Suffering - Because they are awesome?
Deathstars - Same as HIM, dunno why, I just like 'em.
Marilyn Manson - Same here.
Equilibrium - Really fast, frickin' heavy and brutal and still so incredibly cheery! This is a happy brutal metal band! With folk influences.
