For example, there are cultures in South Africa where pedofilia does not exist. @3-L33T, in majority of 1st and 2nd world countries that would already be considered statutory rape kinda... pedophilia is what i think is when a 30 yr old teacher slaps the ass of a 16 year old high schooler. even so that would get him arrested and fired from the teachers union

It's actually ridiculous how much money some parents spend on their 10 year olds to make them "look good". I personally hope that behind closed doors they are not also starving their kids so they "look good" (now that's abuse).
I haven't read other posts in this thread but this topic has been done to death. Mainly it comes down to the concept of consent for a minor. Yes, a lot of people have had sex when they were 15 or 16. Yes, a lot of people never had sex until they're about 25. The problem is that there is no (as far as I know) objective test for when a child (for some arbitrary definition) is "ready" to consent to engage in sexual relationships. The demarcating line at the moment is age.
The inherent problem is obviously trying to use a model to generalise all people when the reality is that everyone is different. I am almost 20 and I'm still immature compared to some 15 year old.
edit: Just realised that I should rectify my argument a bit. As Gravity Cat rightly points out, paedophilia refers to attraction to pre-pubescent children. My argument probably applies more to sexual predators attracted to teenagers who are more or less experiencing puberty.

As a hopeful for medical school, a former US Army medic, the son on a career nurse, brother of a pharmacist, formerly having worked with a chemist to develop some evil stuff and a whiskered EMT I think I'd like to input my medical opinion of pedophilia. There must be some sort of chemical imbalance present in pedophiles considering constant trends in thought patterns without the excuse of common life experiences. Rather than a purely psychological thing, I think there may be a common trend in their brain chemistry to have come to such a conclusion as, "children are sexy" without necessarily having gone through a traumatic event or having similar lifestyles to facilitate such a choice. Perhaps we should use confirmed pedophiles in a neurological study to find the cause of pedophilia beyond freudian analysis to find a quantifiable answer as to why they exist in the first place and how to prevent such a thing from happening. As you can tell I don't approve of pedophilia considering that I view it as a neurological anomaly that can be stopped with research. This is not the same as changing people who are predisposed to being homosexual or toward fetishes so long as they're with consenting adults.
