4Chan, Loli, and a Heaping Helping of Paranoia
-3
So, to start this off, I have to say that I'm a very paranoid person. I practically live off of paranoia. That being said, because of this recent fuss about loli and banning and whatnot, my paranoia has reached dangerous heights.
Here's the deal. I like to browse me some 4Chan every once in a while. I do need my lulz. So I'm just scrolling through the pages, just looking for some fap material or some funny bits, then BAM. CP. On my screen. In my cache. I'm scared shitless. So every time this happens, I wipe my hard drive with Gutmann level security. Still, I could be in trouble.
Also, I do also like to view Hentai every once in awhile. No, I'm no lolicon, and I don't look at the obvious stuff, but I have no idea where the line is drawn with this stuff. What constitutes loli in the government's eyes? Or more importantly, the FBI?
So what am I trying to say? Well, am I screwed? Should I suspect the authorities at my door some time in the near future? Am I going to spend a future in jail with murderers for accidentally stumbling upon CP when clearly not looking for it? Please inform me.[/h]
tl;dr:Stumble across CP accidentally, look at hentai (not sure what is considered loli. Am I going to be seized by the all powerful FBI?

Not likely. The U.S. government is more keen on stopping the spread of child pornography at the source. They'd rather go after hosting servers than individual downloaders. That's why a lot of times these sites will get ultimatums. "Shut this site down and we'll ignore the IP logs, or we take it to federal court and we'll prosecute everyone involved."
The thing is the government would have a terrible time going after individuals because it is quite possible that many people accidentally stumbled over it and without significant proof to the contrary they can't very well arrest you. Best they could do would be to trace your IP, monitor your activity and seize your hard drive, but if they get nothing out of all of that then there is nothing they can do about it.
As for lolicon they wouldn't even bother. There is barely enough ground for them to charge you for that. In the U.S. it isn't technically legal or illegal to possess lolicon. As for child pornography best thing to do is only browse sites that have title 18 U.S.C. 2257. 18 U.S.C. 2257 pretty much means that the site guarantees that all actor/actresses are at least eighteen years of age, and if they aren't it is on their head and not yours.

But there was that one guy who was arrested and convicted for possessing loli. I think it has something to do with it physically being transported, but still, loli isn't completely off the hook. It did contain some bestiality too though, so it might be considered obscene.

He was transporting it over state lines and being very vocal about his collection, which apparently was also a contributing factor. Obtaining lolicon via the internet isn't going to get anyone in trouble.

One thing you should know. It is rumored the FBI is investigating and dealing with 4chan. However, it is said the anonymity in 4chan is so high so that they are having a very hard time.
Plus, 4chan only allows 15 pages of images and then after it will be gone to the 404 error. You will not get in trouble for coming across CP.
If you do, that's like saying you'll get in trouble if a 12 year old girl took pictures of her naked and sent it to you. (THIS IS JUST AN EXAMPLE!)
You shouldn't worry about this much because you're innocent, right?
But if you are keep worrying about this issue, then I suggest you stop going on 4chan and continue your Fakku life.

I cant say Im as paranoid as you are dude, but something that almost quite literally scared the shit outta me was when I "accidentally" clicked a link to "loli"...
Next thing I knew it said my IP had been "logged" or something and something about the authorities...
Long story short... I use a couple a proxies when following random links...
As for "being chased by the FBI" I think its more like, as long as you dont have HUGE FUCKING STASHES OF CP or arent posting on a shitload of sites for everyone to see something Youre safe... but I HOPE you get a couple of "Stay outta Jail for Stumbling into Unknown Ground full of CP Mines" Passes...
I sure as hell could use a couple a those...
EDIT:
I frequent 4chan... But I usually steer clear of /b/ and their shit...
I stay over at /d/, /gif/, or good ol /x/...

Paranoia can be useful. But in your case, it's a little extreme.
There is no way FBI will bother trying to track you down just for coming across CP. Unless you have a history of it, it won't really matter. Since so many people venture into 4chan, it'll be way too much of a hassle for the FBI to track down every single one of them. Especially since you're no doubt not the only one who saw it.
As for loli, I'd say it's more like a don't tell, don't ask type of thing. Not really sure about your American laws since I'm Canadian.

Canada eh...?
But yeah I dont know about canada, here it SHOULD sorta be dont ask dont tell, I think the only country that will FULLY FUCKING enforce anti-loli laws will be the UK... Or so Ive heard...
...
But yeah CP is bad EVERYWHERE...

You have the right to refuse to hand over the IP records, but if you are under federal investigation you are obligated. Assuming the part about the FBI was ever true, there was probably some sort of deal struck since 4chan is still around.

Think about how things would go down in a court of law:
Lawyer: He had child porn on his computer.
You: It just happened to be on the site I was visiting! There wasn't a huge stash, and I didn't save any!
Judge: There is no proof that you searched out child porn, created child porn, or distributed child porn. You are free to go.
Seriously, no lawyer in the world could get you thrown in jail for accidentally coming across child porn on the internet. As long as it actually was accidental. If you had shit saved on your computer and not just in your cache, or if you had made a lot of visits to sites that had child porn (not sites where it just pops up every now and then), that might be a different story. But why would you even be charged with anything? No organization spies on every person they come across and prosecutes them for seeing a little CP. As said, it's about nabbing the distributors and creators.
That's similar to how cops deal with drug dealers, going after the big guys. Local police just go after regular users because it's easy to catch them, and they can reach their quotas and get some more cash for the station/city. But with people online, it's anything but easy. Stay low, and you should be fine.

To all those who are saying my paranoia is extreme, I know full well. The idea of sitting in a jail cell for years just scares the hell out of me. It's just recent cases have been cause for more worry. Such as the case with Matthew White, who claims he downloaded a file not labeled as cp off of Limewire, but it turns out it was cp. As far as I know he was convicted.
The thing that worries me with the cp thing is that if somehow the FBI gets tipped off to log my ip, will looking at hentai be enough grounds for conviction?
And what's the situation with the FBI and 4Chan? What kind of deals were they making? [/h]

Wow, you and I could be the best of my friends. My paranoia is just as extreme as yours is - Some of my older threads could tell ya that. I AM a Lolicon (fictional, anyway,) and I used to be scared SHITLESS anytime something like this came up. Hell, just ask Tsurayu, he knows me well enough.
Anyway - Yes, mislabeled cp on Limewire happens. Quite often. As for 4chan, there are cp raids constantly anymore - As long as you don't SAVE any, you're 100% fine. It's the people who post the stuff that need to care. Seriously, unless you really make an ass of yourself, you're fine on 4chan.
FBI and 4chan? Deals? Ha. Wherever you heard THAT from, you may want to recheck your sources. That doesn't sound like something 4chan would do, and besides that, there would probably be a warning or something under the post box like there usually is. Then again, I don't go to /b/ ...

Maybe we could be cell mates. But really, it's hard not to be worried when you hear stupid, unfair stories of people being convicted for something not of their own accord.

But seriously, just don't do what those people did. If you read into the stories, you'll usually see that the person had something BIGGER to ruin this - One guy looked at a PUBLIC LIBRARY. One guy BRAGGED to the wrong people. There's always something THE PERSON DID to bite them in the ass.
If you just download/view stuff QUIETLY and KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT, you're fine.

OP's paranoia is so severe that he created a new account on this forum and/or posted for the first time seeking advice? I'm not sure if I can empathise...
In any case, as long as you're not accidentally coming across CP on every page which you land on, theres no real reason or possibility of anyone coming after you. I'm pretty sure those guys have much heavier stuff to deal with than to follow the faintest of trails over the viewing of a cartoon

And what's the situation with the FBI and 4Chan? What kind of deals were they making? [/h]No one seems to know. First it was a rumor, then it was said that it was confirmed by moot that 4chan was under federal investigation, then people said that was a lie and moot never said that or was joking. Doesn't matter, it was enough to get multiple lazy ass members of the moderating staff of 4chan let go, and at least somewhat stricter moderation about what actually goes through that image board.
The FBI has been involved with 4chan. This much we know due to the Sarah Palin e-mail attack and the stadium dirty bombs scandal. So chances are good that the FBI is full aware of the child pornography problems in 4chan.
I'm actually willing to believe the FBI did get involved, but as for what happen I don't really believe any of the stories that came out of it.
