they are all busy prepping for grad school (studying for gre's, internship). also, they are rather active guys. Usually, we would go drinking or go outside to play around.
since i am bed ridden, i can't do either. also, i cannot walk or stand for too long. so this means that they could come over to watch movies, and i would rather do that alone for comfort.

I only go out for class or to run to the store. I haven't talked to any of my friends since my birthday, back in February, and I'm pretty sure that it's been even longer since I've talked to someone I don't know.

Up until 8th grade I wasn't allowed outside except for school. My school was really strict so I couldn't socialize in the classroom. Staying inside is just natural for me. But I get dragged out of the house by friends at least 5 times a week and I have work almost everyday so I guess I'm pretty socially active now.

It may just be me, but a friend of mine mooched off of everyone. He was a pretty big shutin, and after a year after graduating after highschool, he still didn't bother to try and find a job. All he did was stay in his basement and play videogames. Whenever he wanted money, he would ask everyone else. When he moved into a friend's of our's, he still only played games, and talked to people over facebook.
I may be the only one, but I do find this a bit odd. What do you all think?

That's the type that I hate. I'd find it a bit infuriating. If YOU choose to be antisocial, YOU better be prepared to fend for yourself often. Ever read NHK and what he was doing to his parents? When it gets to the point where he starts bringing other people down financially, without seemingly caring, cut his ass off.
Or introduce his ass to some REAL SOVIET DAMAGE.

I used to have bulimia at some point I couldn't cope with the social stress of trying to keep up appearances dropped out of school and became a shut in for about 3 years.
I'm sort of going out now but 3 years with out communicating left me with a constant fear of it. I can communicate and people can't tell I have a problem with it, but inside my mind is full of fear I just don't show it.

Well, because of my lacking social life, as in I don't hang out with my friends or go outside very much unless I tend to have an actual reason, and the fact that I'm not working right now... Yeah, it is a very reasonable comparison between the life I have now, and that of a hikikomori. Only subtle difference is I'm not a discouraged worker. I'm actually actively in the job market looking for a job, and haven't yet been unemployed for a year.

I can't remember the last time a hung out with friends. I talk to "friends" at school, work, and the rec center, but I never go anywhere with them.
I don't consider myself a shut-in, but I'm slowly becoming one

I have been a shut in since I was 13. I occasionally went to friend's houses for a LAN party and recently I've only been out for work.
Thank god I'm going to university tomorrow.

I was a shut in for 3 years until my Sophmore year in high school. I used to just stay home watching anime and playing video games without contacting the outside world what so ever. Only time I ever went outside was just to go to school then go straight home.

update on my injury - it's been 3 monts and i've been gettting better. I went to first day of school for the hell of it (i'm taking the quarter off for health reason). Man, I was shocked by SO MANY people. I felt general anxiety coming on, with hearing sensitivity bothering me because it was just so noisy.
As much as I don't like crowds, i felt lonely once i got home. :P Weird feeling.

It comes and goes. During high school I was pretty much wake up-go to school-come home and stayed home on weekends. During College I was relatively engaged and sociable. then I graduated I realized I was an unemployable schmuck and reverted to hikkikomori-dom, which I retained through grad school and a second round of being an unemployable schmuck. So yeah, I guess it mostly comes and stays.
