Concealed Carry on campus

Yay! Another gun control topic! (can you sense my sarcasm? :D )
http://www.annarbor.com/news/campus-gun-law-bill-being-revised/
I as, what is the point? guns allowed on campus but not in buildings? Why, you might as well not have them at all!
Though in all seriousness, what do you think? (again, for Amerkanners) Remembering that to get a conceal-carry permit you have to be 21 and go through safety training/ect. IMO its alot of unfounded fear about gunfights breaking out randomly. (read the comments at the bottom). Also, what do you think about gun free zones? Useful or inviting crime?

I'd be honest, having no weapons on campus would make me sleep safer at night. Sure there are reasons for self-defense, but what crimes have actually happened at college campuses that were not created by a psychotic gun-wielding student? Not much, just the occasional rape and theft. The alcohol can't be even considered a crime at college.
I personally would like to own a firearm(s) and a few weapons, self-defense and for my own gratification. I wouldn't mind being able to carry my own firearm for any purpose, but most people aren't paranoid like that either. In a sense, I'm not really pro or con about the issue as I can't feel too strongly about it.
Ultimately, we should be able to carry firearms, but the college setting is unecessary as they also pack their own police and security enforcement.

I want to say gun control is good but its not because its just an infringement upon my rights as American Citizen. The framers of the constitution said we have the right to bear arms so why the hell is it so hard to do so. I can tell you why its because the government is scared of its citizens with guns. And it's because gun make revolution easier for people of any nation.
Gun free zones are just one more step towards the whole country being gun free because they would use a successful gun free zone in the media as an example of the ideal society.

The reason gun control is so popular is because the media has blown the school shootings out of proportion, I think. No matter how popular gun control gets the government will not be able to bans its citizens from owning them unless they rewrite the constitution first. That is very unlikely to happen because people hate the idea of the constitution being rewritten/ignored. I already own one gun for self-defense, however it never leaves my house. If I feel like I may need to defend myself somewhere in public, I prefer the use of knives. They are smaller, lighter, do not run on ammo, and are not as difficult to get a permit for. If people are really so scared about shootings, why don't they just report any suspicious people BEFORE they happen? Almost every shooting has all kinds of people after them saying stuff like, " I knew he'd snap eventually." or, " He had been talking about it for a while." Prevention people, that is all we need.

Not an American, nor do I have weapons. But...
In the case of school shootings, I still remember the Columbine Massacre and I think most of the gun banning started there. People think that if they can stop people from bringing guns, the gun totting will stop, but they fail to stop it at its core. Why do people bring guns? Answer that first.
In the Columbine Massacre case, the two kids were bullied and were in deep depression. They found refuge in each other and all the feelings of hate they can't express built up until they finally snapped and went berserk. All that shit would have been prevented if the bullying was stopped. All other cases of gun totting world wide in schools are usually caused by long term depression and mental disability to chose right over wrong.
Prevention is better than the cure, right?

Ok I'll say its pretty stupid that they are restricted indoors but not out what is there a place to leave your gun when you go inside. Frankly I hate almost all gun control and this is just another way to put more people in danger.
Oh man gun free zones more like "hey crazy people we got no guns to protect ourselves zones". "Gun Free Zones" are so stupid because it's just basically telling criminals that there is no chance of someone pulling a gun on them. There is no shortage of shootings in "gun free zones" so they are totally pointless. Frankly I want to live in a "gun zone". When you give the regular populace guns crime rate goes down.
Face it where's a criminal gonna go to a place where victims have guns or don't?
Fpod should be here soon to put this more in depth.

The 31 states that have "shall issue" laws allowing private citizens to carry concealed weapons have, on average, a 24 percent lower violent crime rate, a 19 percent lower murder rate and a 39 percent lower robbery rate than states that forbid concealed weapons.Face it where's a criminal gonna go to a place where victims have guns or don't?

I think the best solution of gun control is to increase the price of bullets exponentially,so that people actually think twice before
going on a shooting spree
mugging a person
etc.
They will be like"Oh man,to kill this SOB i got to shell out $1k per clip?"

Prevention is better than the cure, right?Sure sure, but just because something might happen, doesn't mean it will. Same mentality with the guy quoted in the article, for example:
"I don't see any purpose for concealed weapons on campus, whether you've got a permit or not, it's potentially dangerous,"
No shit captain obvious, so is driving a car.
Article wrote...
"The gun lobby has their people saying everyone ought to have a gun, and if we have more and more people carrying guns we'll all be safer, which is totally absurd," Whitworth added.I'm not quoting this because I disagree, but because lobbyists piss me off.

Chris Rock's idea is flat out unfair discrimination.

Weapons concealed or not would be useful in prevention of such shootings. Why? Remember Virginia tech? How many people do you think he would have been able to shoot if a few or several people were armed? gun free zones only open up the opportunity of someone who wishes to do harm towards another person. If a kid is going to bring a gun to campus, he isn't going to care that the campus is gun free. You'd have better luck making an area of a major city a "crime free zone" and hoping the criminals obey the signs.
As for the hoops you have to jump through to carry a concealed weapon, I am perfectly fine with a person having to be 18-21 (preferably 21), have to attend a safety class or something similar but, for simply carrying a weapon on the campus I believe a safety class should be in order and from there the school should know what kind of weapon you plan on carrying.
edit: While I understand the idea that police will have a difficult time figuring out who is who in a gunfight. The good citizens would stop firing as soon as the police issue the order. A psychopath isn't going to stop shooting because the police say so while a law abiding citizen would.
I'll add more as I try to find more information that I haven't posted in the past.

Lol, having a gun for self-protection is stupid by itself. Guns being legal for anyone to carry is stupid.
1. People die when they are killed (heh), and killing with a gun is a lot less work than bare handed or with a knife or w/e.
2. "Self-protection", wth is that, does that mean that it's ok to kill someone who is trying to kill you? I thought murder was something that isn't ok at all, but I guess don't apply in america.
If you want to be protected, illegalize weapons, buy a fucking kevlar and stop eating hamburgers all day (easier to run if you're not fat as a truck).

A wee bit of a misinterpretation here.
1. Yes, people die when they are killed. But, given the option, who would you rather die, you, or the person trying to kill you at that moment? And a criminal/crazy isn't going to bother with a knife if a gun is available.
2. 'Self Protection' means that you have the right to defend yourself when needed; ie, your life is always in your hands and not in someone else's. and murder isn't okay, but it goes back to what I said in point 1; him or you? I doubt the desire to live and mitigating circumstances aren't only an American theme.
And lastly, weapons will never be completely outlawed. That is a fucking pipe-dream that cocooned pussies come up with. and as for the fatt comment? Dunno what you know, but a bullet travels anywhere between 1000 and 2100 fps. Not even Usein Bolt can outrun that.

Illegalization of guns will probably never happen because it is written and said ( I think ) that we must overthrow the (if) government that isn't doing their job, without guns that's probably impossible.
2. If someone is going to kill you because their crazy or what not, most likely their probably going to kill someone else after you....so... i rather kill one guy and save 5 other lives. Save 5 people with one bullet. Save 5 birds with one stone?

@sv51macross: What I believe you meant to say was that even if we ban all guns from the U.S. Making it so only police and the military can own them. We'd still have illegal guns flowing into the hands of criminals. Why? because making them illegal only prevents legal purchase of weapons. It deals nothing with the black/underground markets. Marijuana is illegal in the U.S. and yet despite the billions spent to prevent it's use we still have people one the streets or in their homes selling weed. Guns are in demand by both law abiding and non-law abiding citizens. Ban guns from ownership and you only remove the law abiding citizen from the list. People will still buy guns just like they buy weed. Except, now you won't have any regulation on firearms and won't be able to know who has what.

Heck, I can see the universities in the states ending up with metal detectors and airport like security in the future.
I am not going to go into the "do we need weapons to defend ourselves" argument, but theoretically you should NOT need any guns on a university campus... theoretically.

My dad says that 90% of guns used in crimes are stolen from law-abiders so gun violence would drop 90% if all guns were made illegal. You want to weigh in there?

According to the 1991 Survey of
State Prison Inmates, among those
inmates who possessed a handgun,
9% had acquired it through theft, and
28% had acquired it through an illegal
market such as a drug dealer or fence.
Of all inmates, 10% had stolen at least
one gun, and 11% had sold or traded
stolen guns.

Your farther added an extra zero in there. Perfectly understandable given how close to the 9 key it is.
One statistic that is never talked about is the number of crimes avoided by never firing a shot. Why? because nothing doesn't a grab a headline like "no shots fired". I'm currently looking for a set of statistics on how many crimes are estimated to be prevented by the existence of a firearm on the potential victim.
A.D.D. moment: People fear criminals from acquiring guns. So how do they prevent the criminals from having guns? Stop the people who aren't inclined to use a gun for an unlawful purpose from having guns. That'll show'em

ATF agent Jay Wachtel says that most guns used in crimes are not stolen out of private gun owners' homes and cars. "Stolen guns account for only about 10% to 15% of guns used in crimes,"Its like the weed debate that criminals will get guns no matter what if there are no guns in America. Lets take Japan for an example "Two fatal street shootings by gangsters within a week -- one in Nagasaki and the other in the Tokyo area -- have shattered the illusion that Japan is a country largely free of gun-related crime. Alot of the guns in Japan come from the Philippines, the fact is criminals will always find a way it just depends on if you can protect yourself or not.

Mind if I get a date on Mr. Wachtel's quote? (thanks both you and FPoD)
As for Japan, handguns are illegal but IIRC shotguns and rifles are legal for hunting, it's just extremely (like England/Australia) hard to get a permit.

Yeah, sorry about not finding a quote that's more recent but, navigating a government website is like being paralyzed from the waist down and trying to drag your limp body through a field of thorn bushes, razor wire, rabid dogs and a few thousand land mines. Sometimes it just isn't worth it, except for delicious loli...
