Could Our World Today Be Advanced Without Technology?
0
It seems like the computer we have, the rockets we use, the nukes we launch, and the laundry machines we clean with are what makes us an advanced society.
But is it possible for us to still be advanced, if all the technology in the world were to disappear?
The Mayans were incredibly advanced for their time (I think), but that's not what I'm talking about. I mean, right now, if guns didn't exist, computer didn't work, basically, picture a worldwide EMP going off, and lasting forever. Would we be able to adapt?

I think you gave yourself a good answer with the Maya example; "being advanced" is not solely about technology, but about culture as well.
As for the EMP, I think we'd be fucked. At the university I attend, there was a fire in the server room last week - it was like the end of the world for most students and professors. Basically no usable PCs, let alone Internet access for a whole week. Some guys went downright apeshit...
Now, if I imagine what would happen if EVERYTHING went out, then I guess that would be a fucking disaster.

I know they were advanced back there. But the problem is, with the way people are today, would be better off or worse?

I guess I don't know what you're getting at, then.

It depends on your definition of "advanced."
If we're living in mud huts, shitting into holes in the ground, can we say that we are advanced? Then again, can we be advanced when so many people across the world starve to death or are murdered?
To be advanced, you have to have a beginning point that is worse that where you currently are. If an EMP went off and friend all our electrical devices, we'd still be more advanced than the cavemen that didn't even have a written language. But seeing as most people (in first-world countries, that is) don't know how to farm or take care of themselves without technology and the sort of big business that they're used to, if all electrical devices failed, the world would probably be less advanced than the cultures of a thousand years ago.

I think there are those who will fare better than others. There are still people in our world who live with no electronics anyway.
But I think the ones who are dependent on technology will be tricky to read. I think there will be some who could cope with it after a certain amount of time, but some might not be able to adapt. We've all heard of people committing suicide for a far lesser reasons and I wouldn't be surprised if people went out of their minds and mass suicides could ensue.

I know I could survive without electronic's. I grew up on farms so surviving wouldn't be a problem.

Human can adapt to anything to survive. We could survive the torment without technology, but without it it is very hard to advance. I think that world would become a dull palace without technology.
On the otherhand we need to worry bout pollution and no guns...
we will use only sword spear and brute force to fight

What is it that makes us advanced compared to our predecessors? In my opinion, its the scientific achievements that have been made. We know alot more about the human body and mind, the environment, the planet and the universe than we ever have at any point in history (as far as we know. Atlantis anyone?). I think you worded your question wrong. Technology has been around since the wheel. If you mean that we couldn't use electronics forever, then humanity would be able to adapt. It won't be pretty, but its possible. In the immediate future we would not be advanced because we would've taken a step back. It won't be the stone age, but it would be similar to life in the 1600-1700's for a while. Given time, I think humanity can design cars powered by steam, planes powered by steam, battleships, spaceships (lol), etc.

Without advanced technology a whole lot of people will starve. To make as much food as we do, you need pesticides, chemical fertilizers, ...and most importantly mechanized harvesters and sprinklers. Add in bits and pieces like Roundup ready GM crops and you reach stupendous yields. (Let's assume that we do away with the later, even then the yields are insane even compared to 30 years ago).
Without petrol (which is coming even without a magic EMP bomb! Read up on peak oil), electricity (to pump water and make more land arable) and big distribution system to deliver all this food into the metropolises (the later will be a deathtrap without tech) people will starve and die in droves.
That's food.
Now comes the fun part: without a medical industry health-care will collapse, vaccines and antibiotics will be hard to come by and disase that you've all but forgotten about will take a great toll on the young (...and initially the old as well, but eventually only those with natural resistance and a strong immune system will remain).
Finally without our telecommunication advances and infrastructure the nations itself will collapse as the state will no longer have the means to enforce its rule and enforce the law.

Here's (in my opinion) what would happen if all of the technology that we've come to love was to immediately stop working.
In the first few nights, the looting in inner cities and in poorer countries would cause total anarchy in many areas. The only areas that would be relatively "safe" would be developed countries with strong police forces. After that, everyone would be out for themselves, including governments. Third world countries would go into famine and stronger countries would start to horde things for themselves.
Thats just what i think would happen. Everyone would panic and it would all go to shit.

Wow that is one way to think of it... Look on the other side cyber-terrorism wont occur.....That's only reassuring if you discount how depraved information warfare could become without any verifiable and easily available source to corroborate stuff.
You'd just need to shout "I was mugged in XY town, and they raped my sister!"...
...chances are you'd have your army with pitch forks and shotguns then and there.

Advanced compared to what? And how much technology would we have gotten rid of? All of it? We'd be pretty hosed without pointy sticks and fire I'd think. Despite the odd claim here and there that we should revert to a more "natural" society I think we're better off pushing technology forwards to the point that we understand how to thrive without messing up our planet. Attempting to stop now would just mean we left ourselves a large pile of mess we could never fix.

It really depends.... I have some IMO...
Technology can be anything... but mostly nowadays the word technology is referred to things like the PC and anything that relies on electricity and circuits for our own benefit and even the most basic of tools are forgotten as technology.... The Mayans were advanced, yes, in their time, but there are other civilizations that were also advanced in technology.... So if ever the global EMP would happen, we can still be advanced, but literally its like trying to build a skyscraper without construction equipment and power tools, just using conventional methods

If you take away the internet, phones, cars, etc. A lot of people would be helpless.
After a while people will learn to adapt without it.

I have to say, if all electronics stopped and everyone had to survive by farming or whatever, I'd die. And I'm not ashamed of that. There are people who say that everyone should be able to take care of themselves, grow their own food and make their own clothes, but seriously, in the world we live in, you don't have time for that. You can't be connected to the technological world and also know how to do everything by yourself. If you work forty hours a week, how are you supposed to find the time to learn how to farm or make clothes? Just like how the Amish, if they did mess with electronics, wouldn't have time to learn how to do everything with them because they're too busy taking care of the land and building things and whatnot.
I can't farm, but I can use a computer. I make that decision because I expect technology will continue to thrive and be an essential part of our daily lives.
