Eve and Adam
0
Before I start this, I did not mean any harm to Christians, Christianity, Jesus or any other thing that hints religion.
Someone told me that Adam and Eve, according to him, they were God's first children on Earth. They had sex so thus began Adam the 2nd and Eve the 2nd etc etc.. And why isn't God condemning this? Didn't the Bible say Incest is VERY VERY VERY bad? Or do they have special rules back in the days?

The bible is full of contradictions and in-general un-christianlike bad stuff. There was an article on (the now defunct) TOTSE detailing in about three pages all the sex/incest references in the bible.
This is one of the many reasons I'm a proud athiest.

Ah, good man, being a skeptic are we? Seeing as you're questioning one of the basic stories in the bible, this might interest you for further reading on what it contains.

It's not for the sake of hating on the bible but for the sake of questioning and criticizing it, like you have. They also have a section called "good stuff", where they show the good parts of the bible.

lol, I find it weird that a question on Adam/Eve issue, about them doing incest is by no means intended to bash religion...
Hmm..and now, how do I approach this issue? Assuming Adam and Eve really existed as the first humans, and god ran out of resources to create another couple so that the couple's children won't commit incest...there's no other choice but to commit incest, really. Well, that is if you try to justify the act. But still, god didn't like the act so when there's enough human around, he banned incest. Well, morality in religion is based on god's whims anyway...so all's okay...
And a mot.
And my opinion on the issue...

I, also, am an athiest. But unlike many others, I did not simply throw away the possibility of there being a god without studying very in depth into the matter. I even went to a Christian private school. After going through the entire bible twice, I can honestly say, I think it's full of shit. It contradicts itself on nearly every other page, and has people doing humanly impossible things. Like the fact that every animal species in the world is within walking distance of some old guys home?
If anyone here is a Christian, I do not mean to offend you, I simply just do not believe in this at all.

Amen to dat
You know, the current bible is made up of not one person's accounts but more than a dozen over the millenia. the oldest is the Judea Old Testement which dates before christ was born. The New Testament is the one made after Jesus by his apostles. Over the years, various "holy" man has been translating it, mis interpreting it and making stuff up on the spot.
So how can we even trust the bible as a source of teaching if we cant even have a coherent answer ?
but even with all the contradictions, one can also lwarn from the important message about love and tolerance found within it. (but you have to look really hard)

Descrepensies and double-standard arguments are the name of the game when it comes to the bible, but as it has been pointed out it was written by several people over a long period of time, so that is to be expected. Plus the Roman Catholic church took the bible and edited out the parts they didn't like in what we commonly know as the bible today.

Well the same thing happened with the Noah's Ark story. According to that, every being on the Earth and every single one that will ever exist is the product of incest over millenia.

It's not really incest if you're so far separated genetically from everyone else.
Even if you believe in evolution as opposed to creationism, it comes out to the same thing... Only instead Adam and Eve, you have maybe 100 proto-humans that multiplied to create the human race.
It's always been my opinion that the Bible should be read allegorically. It's clear that incest is bad for society, it leads to psychological and, more importantly, biological problems (inbreeding).

Genesis is a creation myth. I realize there are fundamentalist Jews and Christians who believe that that is exactly what happened, but they are outnumbered by those who interpret the story symbolically. Despite the fact that religions, when possessing political influence, often have and still do get involved in debates about things like science, the scientific origin of the Earth, whether the Earth is round, and other things like that don't really have a lot of bearing on the goals and beliefs of religion and theology anyways.
The nonfundamentalist approaches to the Genesis creation account basically state that it is a creation myth(and thus the factual details of God creating the world in 6 days and Adam and Eve being the first two literal humans zapped into existence by God are neither true nor particularly important) and that the important teachings it contains are its statement of the relationship between humanity and God, the place of humanity in the natural order, the fact that God is the creator and so on.

DEVIL'S ADVOCATE: It never really said that God stopped creating humans at that point right? But the again how did the offspring find each other?
Theory: The reasn we're really stupid is inbreeding. A whole millinea of inbreeding.......

I think this concludes the topic so well, I can't agree more.

He said that when God cast Adam and Eve out of the garden, they went "east of eden" or something, where there were other people. I'm not sure of the details, but that could offer a satisfying answer.
Then again, after looking at WhiteLion's post, it seems meaningless to point out such a thing.

Well isn't the fact that they commited sex the reason they got kicked out? That was what the "apple" was right? It was just a euphemism, that is why sex is called the "original sin".
Oh and the people to the east of eden were their children, remember that the bible did not record the birth of women. It only shows their sons.

I think the "apple" was the fruit of knowledge, not sex. It showed that they opened their minds and thought about stuff, which God didn't like (lol). I suppose it is possible to argue that the fruit represented sex, but how could mankind procreate without sex?

I thought they never aged or had to worry about that? :|

You don't read the bible or any other religious work to actually understand it, you read a religious work to interpret and think about it. Dudes splitting water, gods having kids - don't take this stuff literally.
People who talk about, for example, the apple symbolizing something - you're doing it somewhat right.

I thought the same way they came into the world "BY TEH WORD". Eh, there were other books i read on this though about how the meaning of the apple being a symbol for sex was lost because of the catholic church... It isn't radical idea, I hear it alot.
