The question is this: Is Genetic Engineering acceptable? Personally, I agree with it. It would allow us to cure genetic diseases before they happen such as deaf or blindness. We could also use cloning to grow healthy organs to replace the ones that succumb to disease or become damaged. We could have enough organs that donation of ones organs would because obsolete. As I said in another thread that I hijacked by accident. We could grow an army instead of making people enlist. The genetics from a star Athlete or an Einstein level intellectual could be passed on to the next generation of children. Once the Human Genome is cracked to it fullest the possibilities are endless. Do you want your child to have blonde hair and blue eyes? Do you want them to be strong, Intelligent and beautiful? It would all be possible but, with all technology the emphasis is how its used. Genetic Engineering could also be used in a similar way that Hitler used it. Believing one race is genetically superior to another is a dangerous problem. Lets take the military as an example. If we clone an army (thus controlling the genetics that go into each soldier) we could build on an already good base. Keeping a select few genes in that pool while leaving others as variables leaves the ability for them not to become homogeneous. As we know a homogeneous gene pool is very bad for a species. So leaving some genes as variable we can allow ourselves to naturally adapt while still using the genetic engineering to improve on the base again. As the soldier grow and are trained well there will be a few that stand out. We take the genes from those soldier and introduce them into the next generation of cloned soldier. You would just replace the old gene with the newer and better version of the old one. As you would replace a part in a computer with a better one. Now for the genes that are being replaced would be added to the general populace. As we open up our possibilities we could even begin to open up more areas of the human brain. As it stands the average human only uses 10% of the brains capacity. Think if we could open up another 10% or 20 even 30%? So do you agree that its a good idea or engineer our genes to how we want or you disagree and believe we shouldn't take that aspect into our own hands and we shouldn't play god?

I think we should use genetic engineering so we can once and for all see just how much potential humans have. But the only thing I would not touch is our lifespan. If anything we should take about twenty years off of our existing lifespan to cut down on the population. Living 200+ years don't mean shit if there is no food for you.

I think it is acceptable to a certain degree. Cloning organs (and only organs), removing genetic diseases etc is within the limit of tolerance, however when things go to the sector of "enhancing" humans beyond the normal natural limits through genetic engineering I think it is a taboo.
One of the main problems I see regarding the enhancing is, that by nature, humans fear those that are "superior" to them and thus it would probably lead to a violent conflict between those who are enhanced and those who are not.

Yes, but ONLY if it is conducted under the watchfull eye of a major genetics organisation which in turn is monitored by somelike the UN. We would need a flawless system of conduct before i would approve.

This reminds me of the book i had to read way back when for school its called brave new world and is about a society where ppl r geneticaly born and then put into a caste system where ppl r dumbed down to do certain jobs.

Rly bad stuff might happen if the leadership is anything like it is today.

According to their purposes, yeah..they can be quite useful...
Still, the idea of determining other's life is a little bothersome to me.

Even clones have rights for their individual lives, right??

It would be great to have genetic engineering because you could clone cells or whole organs to save someones life.

OP, regarding your comment about cloning a perfect army in order to end wars, war would still continue despite any such thing. The inventor of the machine gun said that he had created a weapon so deadly and efficient it would make war obsolete. He was deeply saddened when he saw that all he created was more death.

I think that Genetic Engineering in the next step in human evolution. If we can make stronger, fast, smarter, humans why the hell not?
