How Fat is Too Fat?
0
If a person's 500 pounds, that's too fat. Pretty obvious. But where's the line? When does a person go from okay or chubby to fat?
There are a lot of big celebrities out there (pun intended) that make a little extra weight seem like no big deal. Jack Black and Seth Rogen are two great examples. In fact, they are some of my favorites actors, and they both have guts. They're pretty popular, too.
So, is it okay to be chubby? Or is it only okay if you're funny? Or is it not okay at all? And what's the difference between being chubby and being fat?
I'm not exactly sure what I'm trying to say, so just consider this a general thread about obesity and being overweight. But don't ask for weight-loss tips. There are better places to discuss that.

I don't know how to approach this question,
My opinion. I think that it's too much when it affects your daily life. you can't do anything? you depend on others. Some can be a little chubby and still go through life no problem. But it's when it's tough to go through the day and the cause of it is being fat.
P.S. I'm sick of skinny bitches calling themselves fat all the time (:

Of course it's "okay" to be chubby/obese. You wanna be fat? Go for it. It doesn't mean you will be pleasing to look at and you will also have to deal with the health risks that come with it. The way I see it, chubby is when you have some flabbiness and fat is when you're obviously much more flabbier and larger than the average person. If you can make it look good, then I don't see what the problem is.

How much you want to weigh is your own choice. You can be obese or stick thin is your own choice and you should accept the consequences of your decision. Recently, I have put on some extra weight. I find it unattractive and I have made a conscious decision to eat less (while maintain proper nutrition) by cutting down on my intake of fatty foods, soda, etc. I am also going to exercise to reduce my weight to within 10lbs of my proper BMI.
As RBZ already said it's "Okay" to be fat. Your decision; accept the consequences.
Note: The actual "line" for me is when you see the fat affect your life. I had a co-worker who was obese. He had sausage fingers, would lean on things to hold himself up and generally was too lazy do anything because he would tired from carrying around all his weight. I also had an ex who looked better than I did at 170 when she was 180lbs. She was fine even though she was "overweight" according to her BMI

Penguin is right, the point to realize you weigh too much is when you can no longer perform simple tasks that you used to be able to do.
- If you can no longer dial a phone without some sort of wand.
- If even turning sideways only barely gets you through doors anymore.
- If you get stuck in seats.
- If you find yourself too lazy to stand up to get more food. (Then you know you really have a problem)
- If moving around has ever resulted in collateral damage.
Well, those are just a few examples. Mostly you should just do what you want, but if you can't manage your own life anymore to the point where others have to help you, than you have a problem.

I guess when it starts being a health problem is when you are too fat.
Personally, I wont consider my weight a serious problem until I look down in the shower and can't see my junk.

It depends. It's probably not only about weight, but your whole body appearance.
Some people "look" too fat if they weight, let's say 100kg (about 200 pounds I suppose), and others may "look" fat with about two thirds of that.
You should decide yourself whether you're to fat or not. I guess coming to know you've got a problem is the first step in solving it.
Yet, there are still people who cannot affect their weight or appearance. I know about 2-3 people who are, compared to "normal people" (I hate using that word for humans), ridicullously fat. And you always find some asshole who tries to bully them for that. But what they don't know is, those people have some health problems and they just ended up like that despide living a healthy life. It just came to them and they couldn't do anything about it.
That reminds me, I should really lose some weight. Nevermind, maybe later. :?

I understand that it's the person's decision, but the discussion's not fun if we just leave it at that. :(
So, at what point does obesity become a problem, according to society? Also, what about celebrities that are fat? Like I mentioned before, Jack Black and Seth Rogen are big guys, and they're popular, but what about Chris Farley, John Goodman, John Candy, etc.? Is it possible that by not denouncing the fat celebrities, we are telling children that it's okay to be fat? You tell a kid to lose some weight, and he can easily say, "Nobody tells Jack Black to lose weight."
Also, I'm getting the feeling that people think I'm talking about myself in this topic, but I'm not. I'm just asking questions to see what people say. I'm happy with my weight, though I would like to lose a little fat (but who doesn't?), and I'm nowhere close to being "too fat."

I don't think those fat celebrities are the main problem of giving a wrong example to childern. There's still "thin" majority. (At least what I am aware of)
More of a problem are probably those damn fast foods and the fact that parents don't always have time (or worse, they don't WANT to) to care about their childern nutritions. And among the young people, at least in my country, where fast foods started to spread only in last 15 years, you have to eat in fast foods at least once a day to be "cool". Add how much money is spent to advertise fast foods and sweets compared to some vegetables and you get the true reason (from my point of view).
YES, I deffinitvely see that worse than some fat celebrities.
But how I look at it, I'm far away from the topic.

As long as your not obese I think you can be as fat as you want it's your choice.
Also are we all supposed to be the skinny clebs are they what we should strive for. I'm gonna take a stand and say NO. It's cliche but what matters is on the inside.
The media is horrible at repersenting people you only see the hottest clebs with a unreachable body type and it makes people strive for it. Some even die trying to achive it. I'm glad that some clebs are fat so that our kids can see that they are fine the way they are and no one should change them.

I say one is too fat when they start taking up more then one seat on the bus.
I myself am, and have been for some time now, a little chubby...ok, a little might be pushing it, but nonetheless I'm not what one would consider Fit. Yet, I can run, jump, and lift heavy objects no worse then my friends, except that one guy who used to run track and takes every opportunity to demonstrate his running prowess. Plus, I have a big frame as it is, so even if this was all muscle, I'd still be fucking wide.
I dunno. No one has called me fat, to my face or behind my back, since around...Primary school, I think. Either everyone got over it, or else it's really not that big of a deal.
Except when you are sitting on a New York bus during a rush hour, with a person at each corner and then some four hundred pound woman boards the bus, sits down next to you, causes the seat to groan in protest, and squishes the thin person to the left into the wall and me nearly into the fucking aisle, but I digress.

You can tell that you're fat when you look at your feet while standing but you can't see them...
and you can tell if you're too fat when you couldn't even bow down to look at your feet...

Like everyone else has said, in U.S. society(one I live in), being obese becomes a problem when that person is having health problems, becomes tired when simply standing, and needs help from others to perform simple tasks. As a society, obesity becomes a problem when that society has the highest percentage of heart conditions and other health problems related to obesity, compared to other societies of the same ranking. Throw on top of all that the perfect image of sculpted muscles and a curvacious body.
With famous celebrities, especially with the ones you've mentioned, they seem to overcome the fact that they are obese with the personalities and comedic roles that they tend to mostly portray. Of course not everyone who is obese is like that, so it can be both good and bad for children. It can make them think that all fat people should be funny when that just isn't the case.
This brings up another question, how many famous female celebrities are there who happen to be obese?
Rosie O'Donnell, she may not be famous in our book but all of us know who she is, I'm sure. That's really the only person I can think of. Not paying attention to pop media and living under a rock doesn't help =P

All depends on your Height dude... If you're tall enough like 2 meters, even 500 pounds is still ok for you... anyway 1 kg = 5 pounds right??.. we rarely use pounds to measures weight here..

Yeah, 500 pounds is around 225 kilos.
that's pretty fucking big. I'm just shy of 2 meters tall and I don't even break 300 pounds. And I'm a big dude.

i myself am fat. i admit to it, but i stil lam active, and can be physically active, without my weight impairing me. so i would say that i am not obese, or too overweight. i think you are chubby when you are like jack black or seth rogen. fat and over is like ralphie may. but yeah you know you are fat when yo uare like 300+ pounds. i am 280, so i am almost there actually, therefore i acknoledge my fatness.
