Legalizing Marijuana in California (Proposition 19)
0
I have to say, I'm surprised this hasn't been posted in this SD area yet. I tried to look at all the recent topics here, so hope I didn't just miss it somewhere.
I heard about this on the radio the other day and read a little bit more on it. The comments I heard varied from:
- They should legalize it to gain more money for the state through taxing it
- These people won't be of any danger on the road, as they will be the ones driving 25 mph (Lol)
- They shouldn't legalize it because the country doesn't need 3 legal drugs(alcohol & cigarettes being the 1st two)
- They shouldn't legalize is because the other two drugs find their ways into kids hands, so this one will too.
Just to clarify, this would legalize people over the age of 21 to carry up to 1 ounce of marijuana.
Since elections deciding this for Cali are coming up, I'm just curious what fakku people are thinking...
Think it's unrealistic to believe it could be passed?
Think it's a good idea? Bad idea? Please share : ) ❤

I like it in the terms that it will allow hemp to become legal in the country, which is good because cheap ethanol can be made from it.
Though there are more legal drugs than just alcohol and nicotine.
I personally don't care about actually smoking it.

Their is no logical reason NOT to legalize it that can't be applied to liquor or tobacco...honestly the damn stuff is probably not as bad for you as either of the latter.

first of all, i think i already made a post about legalizing marijuana. But i guess this is kind of different.
In the post i made before, i fully supported legalizing weed. But now, my opinions have changed a bit. Its not because i don't like weed anymore, but because its going to stop rolling my MONEY!!!
shit, if weed gets legalized, where are we hustlers and players gonna get the bank roll? its no biggie, but i still prefer to have it at the decriminalize standards, like getting a ticket or some shit.

All depends on if you care about having people going around with another legal recreational drug. Then there's all the regulations, paperwork, and court confusion over specified legalities if its passed. Basically, if you like the idea of it being passed, don't get your hopes up on how easy it'll turn out.

My vote is to legalize it.
Will it bring the state money? Fuck no it won't. Please, if the state is planning to charge enough on pot to make a tidy profit, people will just buy it from dealers or grow it at home: just like they do now.
Will it lower crime? Significantly.
I have never done pot, nor have I ever had a desire to, nor do I believe I will ever have the desire to. I think it's a stupid decision to make, but as an American, I believe the people have the right to make that choice without the government stepping in to up the ante.

Yep, another vote on the legalize side here...it's California, we're all hippies anyway.
No, but seriously, legalization will do a lot to solve the problems the state currently has. It would free up space in the jails that are taken up by petty druggies and dealers, which would help a lot in bringing the state budget down. You can tax it if it's legal, which would bring state revenue up. You can regulate it if it's legal, which brings the quality of the products up to a certain standard. Plus the drug is just about as harmful as tobacco, and is actually LESS harmful than alcohol, so why not legalize it?
The only problem is that federally, it's still banned, so I predict lots and lots of costly court battles if this resolution passes.
Edit: the resolution as written will actually only help with freeing up jail space, but it's a definite step in the right direction, IMO.

The only problem I can possibly foresee is how California is the only state that's doing this. Although not a given, there is a possibility that weed addicts across the nation would migrate to California simply to avoid the legal issues. This could cause a problem known as the tragedy of the commons and California could end up biting off more than it can chew.
But yeah, legalizing marijuana is probably the best course of action for California right now. 3 Strikes law won't be hitting the small time druggies and filling the prisons to the point where there isn't room to fit a murderer. State government can save from over housing inmates. Courts can free up their schedules. Drug gangs wars won't drop much though since their crop would probably stay on crack and cocaine.
Edit: Yeah. I was gonna say that too: Don't legalize it, decriminalize it. However, seeing as how the proposition itself says legalizing it and placing a new ballot is such a hassle... I'm pretty sure the wording is probably going to stay as "legalizing" but the government would most likely treat it as decriminalization.

Weed is decriminalize in California already. If this passes then it the first time a illegal drug is legal anywhere in the world by law and not by corruption of police and government.(where it illegal but the government does little to nothing about it).
Even in Holland marijuana isn't legal.. it tolerated. If you in a legal coffeehouse or in your home you can have a certain amount of weed and hash, but it still illegal to grow and buy marijuana and have more the a oz at a time. At least that what the documentary said, i never had a problem there.

This proposition does not mean marijuana will be considered legal in California (far from it), it will however sit at an illegal/legal status instead of it's current illegal but decriminalized status.
Yes! One step forward to controlled marijuana usage. I think it may be revised before it is passed, but there's a high possibility this proposition will go through. It won't effect dealers all that much. An ounce isn't a terribly large quantity of marijuana by any means. Most of the stoners I know can go through that much regularly within a week to four days and they've never really been for having to constantly pick up marijuana either (they are stoners after all.).

I hope it gets legalized. I dont live anywhere near California, but if weed gets legalized there, then I'll just have to be patient and wait for the other countries to follow.
Also, nobody has any information of it, but in Finland they are going to do some changes to the drug laws soon'ish. There's no proof of if it will be good or bad, but like usually, I'm having my hopes up! (and then I end up getting really disappointed, like usually...)[/h] BUT, since the police here has been busting more weed smokers/growers for the last few months (I guess the police would be quite pissed if they knew weed was going to get legal/decriminalized, so that would make them bust all the potheads while they still can)[/h] and weed has been quite much in the news lately too, and sometimes in a good way *gasp*.
But yeah, go California, go!!!

From SD and I just recently heard about it. I'll be shocked if they legalize it. In a way I'm hoping they do because the plant itself can be used for so much more than just smoking it.

Doesn't matter lol. I get weed anyways, the supply isn't harmed. QFT and I'd smoke to that.
This bill doesn't affect the amount of unneeded labor and possible danger that is involved in the production and sale of marijuana in large quantities.
It does however lessen the number of working class and NEET citizens being convicted of petty crime. That's really just better for a country overall.

Even if we(Californians)pass this... we will still get busted by the feds. Obama said it a couple days ago. Which is sad since he let us not get harass by the DEA on the medical pot part. Federal law secedes state laws, which is retarded since it not illegal to smoke it only own it or grow it with out a tax stamp which the government never made or have gave out. The civil war was about states rights, this one thing wouldn't cause us to secede from this union, but their is more laws like this in other states that the fed overturn that a revolution might come.
