Polygamy, ok or not?

Recent controversy over gay marriage(in AMerica anyways)has gotten me thinking about Polygamy. Now, the concept of Polygamy doesn't really bother me, as i think that if 3 or more adults who all know what they are getting into decide to marry(and no one is being forced or tricked into it) it would be ok. But the reason why i am hesitant to support it is because every time i hear about it is some middle aged due marrying barely legal women who seem like they were forced or tricked into it. This to me says that the people who currently practice it are guys who are just trying to make up a excuse to take as many women as possible.

I think if guys are allowed to marry multiple women, then the right should go both ways. So honestly i wouldn't mind polygamy being legalized as long as it is consensual and between adults. Furthermore, i don't think it would lead to marriages with animals or inanimate objects, since those couldn't sign marriage licenses. But i wanted some other opinions on this

I don't have a problem with it... i don't know why anyone wants more than one wife? Just because it twice the bitching and more headache fill non sex having.

I have a problem with polygamy. Maybe I'm just conservative, but if you want to be with more than one partner, don't get married. Marriage is about settling down with someone you love, and whom you want to spend your life with. Plus, like Black Jesus stated, it seems to me that the idea of polygamy is taken advantage of all to often. Also, I'm pretty sure that Utah had to ban polygamy in the region in order to enter the Union. Thats why Utah became a state much later than its bordering states. Legalizing polygamy would be a mess, and I bet it would be misconstrued and misused in many different ways.

Legally, I'm not quite convinced that polygamous marriage is a good thing. What I would rather happen is that marriage as an institution be abolished totally, and instead, have something like legal unions for everyone. In relationships though, I think polygamy is fine. I'm actually poly myself, so it's not a problem for me as long as all parties are legally able to consent and agree with whatever arrangement.

Marriage isn't what it's crack up to be(not sure if i said it right so remix 'Isn't that great'). We're still using a system made to own women and get something for the pain of it.. Dowry. Marriage is a way of keeping track of someone wealth or to keep a Victorian myth of monogamy to keep the race pure or because god said it. I love my wife, but we know what animals we are since humans aren't meant to be solely monogamous.

Me and my wife aren't monogamous, but it work for us. Of course this is choice we made (well nature fail view on bisexuality is at fault too) and our views are not and shouldn't be use unless it's ok with you.

It's people choice to have a polygamous relationship, unless it's force on or with underage girls and your not using the welfare system it's OK with me, but i wouldn't want more than one wife... would blow my brains out on the bitching alone.

Polygamy is, IMHO, ok as long as you can juggle relationships and it doesn't turn into a jealousy/cling thing (like fucking five finger clingy). AND the women/men agree with eachother.

In anyway, I'd definitely like to see it not frowned upon haha.

Polygamy is cool.

A man can marry a dozen or so foreign women, and in a year they'll all be US citizens. Hell. I'll be a US citizen then turn myself into a money making machine. Pay me $50k, I'll marry you and you'll be a US citizen before you know it. We don't even have to see each other. And it will all be LEGAL. Right now, 400,000k citizens a year are created by naturalization. That figure will explode if polygamy is allowed.

In all seriousness, people shouldn't look at polygamy in terms of "love". If polygamy were allowed, it _will_ be abused, as above.

^What he said. Monogamy doesn't work for everyone, but neither does polygamy. Marriage works for some, and fails spectacularly for others. Ultimately, it should be up to the people involved in the relationship to define what their relationship is.

Polygamy, in many (well maybe 90% of the world)places its degrading, although some cultures still with this as a normal stuff.

Its an interesting topic, even for people dont like, for example catholic people, but here is a fact, the Bible doesnt says many of the greatest prophets and lets say "characters" in the Bible had many wifes?
Am not insulting or saying catholic people its wrong about going against polygamy, but ,my point here is how the Church most of the time, just as always for me, manipulates stuff like this to make things more easier for them. Just my opinion i respect all religions.

I think you CAN love and spend the rest of your life with several people, as long as that's what everyone wants and agrees with. The poly trio I do know IRL is composed of a married couple with a kid + a boyfriend to the wife. IIRC they've been together er...9 or 10yrs now? That's a pretty long time, so it obviously works for them. Teh bf and I have been together and poly for close to 4yrs now, although our partners have come and gone. I just don't see a way to recognize these relationships legally within the context of marriage.

Personally, I'd agree with you on just about everything. Consent needs to be key, in my opinion, when it comes to polygamy and not just between the dude and the new girl, but also between the wife as well(or the new guy and the dude etc.). I personally think it would suck if lets say my wife and I agreed to polygamy and my wife goes off and marries some random dude, who I don't know or worse, don't like. I'd kinda be ripped off there. :|

Cause my parents urrr -.- Kinda retarded to talk about but anyway they never got married and there with other people and got even more kids~ But they love eachother~soooo...yeah I dont care~:/ (Dont like writing personal stuff~x.x) So being put in a relationship with many people,well.. Personally, I would just as soon not get married at all, because it seems that if you and your partner are happy together, and love each other, why bother with marriage? Plus, if you never get married, you can be with as many people as you want at the same time, as long as that's what you and your partner are into. To be more concrete, I don't really endorse polygamy as a concept, since I feel that it kind of defeats the whole purpose of marriage, but I have no problem with polygamous dating, if that's what floats your boat.

I guess you can legalize it and see how it goes. I don't care if you do, but the partners must agree with each other.

I think it's okay in the sense that the guys are taking one(or three) for the team. I mean half the time these women are butt-ugly so it helps the other guys out

polygamy is completely accepted in both of the major religions of the world. which is Islam, Christianity (and all its branches)

1 Kings 11:3, King Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines.

2 Chronicles 11:21, King Solomon's son Rehoboam had 18 wives and 60 concubines.

and Exodus 21:10 tells that you can have as many wives as you want as long as you treat them equally

and for all you who say that the new testament over rides the old well your wrong again it says clearly in Matthew 5:17-18
