Polygamy, ok or not?

I also think polygamy is fine. Hell in Anime's if they actually thought of it then maybe the characters could all have a happy ending, rather than a guy that basically cheats on all the girls that like him.
My only problem with it is that like someone stated above, marriage is sacred and should be with only the one you love. Marriage is a union in which the two persons become one. With three or more people, this seems unlikely. I could only accept it if person ABC were all in love with each other and not if persons BC loved person A. Fuck if thats the case thats just not fair.
Well anyways I think I have the capacity to only focus my time on one other person than myself so I could never do polygamy, but anyone else crazy enough to go ahead, you have my blessing.

A man can marry a dozen or so foreign women, and in a year they'll all be US citizens. Hell. I'll be a US citizen then turn myself into a money making machine. Pay me $50k, I'll marry you and you'll be a US citizen before you know it. We don't even have to see each other. And it will all be LEGAL. Right now, 400,000k citizens a year are created by naturalization. That figure will explode if polygamy is allowed.
This didn't occur to me when posting this topic, but you do have a point. Maybe polygamy as a legal institution is unworkable.

Monogamy doesn't work for everyone, but neither does polygamy. Marriage works for some, and fails spectacularly for others. Ultimately, it should be up to the people involved in the relationship to define what their relationship is.I kinda back this up, but more in a 'meh' kind of way. I don't really care what other people do, as long as they're not dicks about it. Whatever floats your boat, as long as it doesn't sink mine. (But stupid logic is something I can't abide, as we'll see later.)
Now, this only goes to a certain point. Those guys that are marrying like three 15 year old girls (and either paying for it or kidnapping them, or whatever) are screwed up. Don't sink anyone else's boat, please.
Now, this also has a good bit to do with what I think of religion in general. The people who still take what was said in a text written thousands of years ago as the only way to live 'properly' are, in my opinion, kind of dumb. A quote from my own mother: "Marriage is defined by God as being between a man and a woman!" Really? Who told you that? God? No, just some dudes thousands of years ago who happened to write this stuff down. So if those dudes thousands of years ago had written about The Force, that's what you'd believe in? (Honestly though, I think The Force is a more feasible human creation than God.) As for the arguments that are 'it's okay because there are instances of polygamy in the bible,' they're also stupid, for the same reason as stated above.
Back on topic, I agree with what has been said previously. As long as it's between consenting people, I see no problem. Now, personally, I don't think I'd be able to do it. Along with the majority of other humans, there would probably be feelings of jealousy and anger in there, and it just wouldn't work out. Some animals (humans included) typically choose one life-long mate. Why? I don't know, that's just how the cookie crumbles. I'm a geologist, not a biologist (or ecologist, or whatever would study that). But people tend to bring things into the equation (like religion) that have no place in the argument. Feel free to disagree, I'd love to discuss these things ^^
Also: Peto453, your avatar is AMAZING.

In theorey, and going both ways(not just one man and many women, but also one woman many men, or multiples of both), if the people involved are ok with it, then have at it i say.
in reality/practice, as it is today, i think it's mostly about subjugating women.
also, i have enough trouble trying to understand one woman at a time. so i'd rather not put myself in a position to be surrounded.

If you can make it work and its not some religous scam or cult then I don't see why not tbh.
It seems unlikely that many people would be able to however.

Some (make that very few) people are capable of polygamous relationships, and its not like it hasn't been around. But, I'm far more worried about the legal issues of civil marriage and whatnot. I think it'd be more abused than marriage is typically (not to mention the whole underage and non-consensual issues). If there were some guarantee it wouldn't throw a wrench in the legal system, I'm okay with it.
Just like gay marriage, only the people who are willing to will do it, and it'd be a small majority. I, personally, could never commit myself to more than one man because marriage to me is a one-on-one thing, an idea I will pass on to my children :P

It's not my preference, and I can't ever see myself in a polygamous relationship, but if it works for you, have at it - I'm not going to tell you what to do.
Do what makes you happy, yeah?

I already saw the topic about multiple Waifus, and silly as it was, it gave me the idea of something that IS actually semi-serious.
What do you guys think about polygamists?
Honestly...I don't know what the arguments for and against are. I've never actually looked into it.
I mean, for right now I'm ok with it, but if there's a good reason for people not to be polygamists...let me know.

No sir, I don't like it. Strangely, my attitude towards polygamy went from "seems pretty cool" to "its a disgrace" after watching the anime "Saber marionette J-X". I don't think its reasonable to distribute your affection to more than one mate. It may be fine in the short term, but what about the long term? Add in the factor of producing children and it'll end up being one big disaster.
Meh, getting sleepy, I'll come back to this one l8tr.

Even though it's not my thing, I'm okay with it. If everyone is in consent then people should have a right to do as they please. I honestly haven't heard of a reason against it but I'm pretty sure every argument against it can go with monogamous relationships, too. That would include any religious arguments.
And that's all I got to say about that. I really don't know why polygamy would be such a bad thing.

It just doesn't seem right, though I don't know anyone who's done this irl. I would think jealousy and disagreements would eventually end such a relationship very easily and quickly

I don't see Polygamy as something which is against the law, but I'd prefer not to know about others who have more than one partner in a week. But to be perfectly honest, because I'm a guy with urges, if I had more than one girl on the go I don't think I'd be complaining either. That is of course, unless I was found out.
Personally though, I'd want to keep to one person and stick to them.

Even though I wouldn't want to become a polygamist, I don't really see anything wrong with the concept of it...as long as everyone consents. What's wrong with marrying 4 women (or men according to Polyandry) if they all don't mind sharing the same husband/wife? Also, even if they do decide to have kids, it wouldn't be a complete disaster: the child(ren) will just have a bunch of in-laws.

Yes, I do, as long as the guy can be fair to all of his girl and not just favoring one or two of them.

I suppose I approve of it. I'm far too old-fashioned in my concept of romance and everything that involves it to be interested in polygamy. However, I'm certainly for less moral pressure when it comes to our day-to-day lives.
No matter how you toss the dice, polygamy is nothing more than an issue of morality. Yes, I'm looking at you people that try to argue taxes of all things as a reason to argue against instating polygamy. Try a little harder to come up with something besides America's poorly constructed tax codes, kay?
Less morality influencing law the better.

As long as everyone is clean I approve.
Where I live its illegal so if I met someone who was in one, and was not forced into it, I wouldn't report them but I would make sure they knew it was illegal here to begin with.
If I chose to be a part of a poly-relationship I would go for something like polyfidelity because of the exclusivity.
