Profanity

I agree with most of the stuff that gibbous said. Except I don't like to swear, so I tend to keep it to a minimal (even when I'm by myself). Sometimes when writting a post I get carried away and put in a cuss word or two, but then go back and rewrite it in a more "polite" manner.
It bothers me when people unecessarily overuse cuss words when talking. But I don't mind when it's used for comedy (like Rbz or Namasensei).

I watched an episode of Penn & Teller's Bullshit about Profanity and In that episode, the woman who was against profanity was very, VERY stupid. She consider "holy cow" as a profane phrase and replaces it with "Santa Vaka". "Vaka" in spanish (I think), or "Baka" in filipino, means cow, and it doesn't take much to know that "Santa" is equal to "Saint", fairly equating to Holiness. Pretty much, she just said "Holy Cow" in anther language.
Also, in the end of the episode, she got pissed for some reason (don't remember, I was playing Monster Hunter while watching) and she ended up cursing and dissing the person she hates so much that it was irritating.
The ending remark of that episode is what I also abide too: "Its not how you say it, its all about what you are trying to say" or something like that. If the person in front of you is fine with profanity, then cool. If the person is not, then avoid cussing as much as possible.
Hate the message, not the words.

Yeah, now that I think about it, how you say it is a lot more important the the actual words themselves. Usually I use them in fair context, like out of anger or disgust. I do sometimes randomly throw them out there, but I like to think I don't do that very often.

Curious and Wondering
I use profanity but I always check the situation first if profanity can be used in it without any untoward incident to be triggered by it that I wouldn't like, and I keep it to a minimum as to keep my intended message in a sensible and readable form.

I think its a family thing personally. I know i shouldnt swear around the kids but sometimes you gotta let one rip. my sisters kid whos 6 doesn't understand swearing is bad so he see me do ait and thinks its cool. For example yesterday i was in the forums and he was playing his game in his room and all i heard was " AWWWW! FUCK BALLS!"....I tried so hard not to laugh but my sister heard it and couldnt get mad cause he didnt know better. But yes i think time are changing and swearing is slowly becoming more acceptable.

Like every other form of verbal expression, profanity thrives on intelligent and creative use of language, a skill which NOBODY EXCEPT FOR ME few enough people possess.I have no qualms with coarseness. When in private, I speak as coarsely as a Whig and swear like a sailor, but none the less, I don't habitually use profanity in excess. I am coarse because in private I feel I have the right to call things by their name.
Excessive profanity doesn't bother me because it's profanity. It bothers me because it's excessive, like a verbal tic. Like someone ending every sentence in "you know what I'm saying?". It's fucking grating because it's repetitive as balls, god-damn trite and bloody boring, you know what I'm saying?
Profanity can be an efficient way to add emphasis, or humour. But profanity alone does not equal humour, and if you constantly emphasize every second word, the emphasis is lost.
But, I'd much rather speak with someone whose every second word is "fuck", as long as their IQ is above room temperature, than talking to an elegant and refined dullard.
In closing, I'm not sure whether it's a matter of generations. Perhaps it is for you anglo-americans. But for what it is worth, the most foul-mouthed person I have ever met, was my grand-mother. None of us teens could have even only dreamt to compete with the never-ending stream of military-grade expletives shooting forth from her mouth.
lol I'll do my best to rep you once the system is turned back on, my friend.

I haven't used gratuitous amounts of profanity in a long time, but my brother, who just entered middle school, swears more than I ever did.

I think it's bad, regardless of how many people are doing it. Swearing is and always will be bad. My neighbor's 5 yr. old kid swears more than me >.> and the kid isn't just repeating them, he's actually using them correctly. It kinda saddens me that innocent children are swearing like chain-smoking gangsters

I censor myself for humorous affect, but I don't care one way or another about swearing. I wish it was more acceptable in America like it is in Europe (or maybe it's just the UK).
My mom taught me 90% of the swears I know; 4% from my older brother; and I suppose the rest comes from public education and TV (i may not be giving TV enough credit, but it's funnier this way because most expect the parent to want to avoid teaching their kids swear-words).

I do swear a lot, though I doubt it's not much of a surprise to anyone around here. My mom has a smart quick sharp mouth on her. She's mellowed down drastically since when I was younger, but growing up it just became normal to me.
However, I did not start cursing in front of my mother until I was 18, seriously - and that was an accident. I saw someone I knew in town when in the car and I said they were a fuckhead and she looked at me in shock because she never heard me curse in front of her before and I was scared shitless. I thought she was gonna backhand me, but she just laughed instead.
If I had been a minor she would have busted my mouth open.
Now I rant to my mom in the same manner as I would any of my other friends. "This fucking shit..." and so on.
Kids do curse way younger now, and like my mother I feel the urge to smack them across the mouth.
I don't even understand why there's an 'acceptable age' when to curse, it's just how I was raised and how I feel upon the matter.

My mom used to swear alot when driving, cursing other drivers on how they drive. She just sweared on another language but basically the same meaning as Fuck( in cantonese "Diu lei lou mou". I honestly did not know what that means on that age and asked her what does that mean, she panic and lied me it means " Due to the driver's mother not teaching his son well".
I guess in modern times, people are more aware of what are you trying to express truly then the method of expressing.
Btw, swearing around friends is also a symbol of bond, signifying that you do not need to hold back with them, around guys only tho. Which means swearing is just a method of speech, its what your true message that is important.

I love profanity. Versatile and effective. I agree with the profanity+friends=bonding, but in normal situations a good 'shit' or 'fuck', or even just a simple 'goddamnit!' can carry so much emotion. Humor too when overused. Remember that scene from Trains Plane and Automobiles?

That's kind of how it is with my father. I kept my swearing to myself up until about seventeen, and then I started swearing in front of my dad as well and usually we just laugh about it, since whenever I'm swearing in front of him its because something has me absolutely pissed off. Somehow me being angry is enjoyable to others. >.<

As for swearing, cursing and the like, I tend to ignore it alot, depending on the situation.
I can understand everyone swearing every now and than as we are all human and are thus likely to go into a rage or the like every now and than (trying to sort my schedule at the university has caused me to swear more than once :D)
However I think there are several categories when it comes to swearing. If e.g. I am saying that something can "go to hell" to someone I know, it is within the acceptable limits. However swearing at persons or in discussions in a way that is offensive against other persons is a no go in my opinion, at least if you want to keep it on the level of a discussion and attempt to stop it from being on the level of just screaming at each other senselessly.
However on that part I note that as long as you don't overuse it, it is okay to swear in public to voice your strong dismayal against something (for example the event scheduling system of my university).
Be that as it may, cursing is annoying if you start swearing in every second word of your sentence, like many youths tend to do it these days all over the world. Combine that with bastardization of the modern language and you wish there was a "mute" option for everything around you.

It kinda saddens me that innocent children are swearing like chain-smoking gangstersThat's probably a fairly common belief and social stigma, although it may not be as common around these forums, because people who see pornographic material as an ok thing are probably less likely to see swearing as all too terrible thing. Or so it seems to me.
It's not really about how many people are doing it, exactly, more like how society at large feels about it. And a lot of people who don't actually care might still be against it because society expects them to be. So you aren't alone in how you feel about it, but it's still bullshit. "Bad" words are only bad because people think they are an accept them to be. There isn't anything particularly more terrible about these words than others, it's just a matter of perception.
You last sentence brings up another interesting point; the view that swearing is a trait of the lower class or degenerates and criminals, or that upstanding citizens don't swear. It isn't even close to being true these days, and can honestly be an offensive stereotype to some people. It doesn't taint one's innocence to swear anymore than it does to watch cartoons.

Read an FML where this guy's child's first phrase was "Wu da fa bik!"
Anyways I don't use profanity except in that small time in my childhood when I fell under the influence of my friends, that lasted about a few months... Anyways I find that profanity is a misuse of the language. Especially when people say fuck every 3 words and think its cool. What some guys said earlier, excessive profanity causes people to doubt your intelligence and reduces the elegance in speech.

Hmm, I try not to Swear unless I feel its really needed. I still don't swear in front of my parents out of respect for them!
However I would agree that is seems like it has become a new movement to swear every 5min amongst Teens and children.

well I swear to re leave my stress. but i make sure to watch my mouth when I have too.
I don't mind I few swear words but I think you should know when to and not to swear. I mean I hear little kids at the mall swearing like sailors. I don't approve of that. kids need to know the meaning of the words before they can say them.
but they are just words they can't physical hurt but still its not nice to be swear at by a 7 year old. -_-

Most likely, I think it's from pop culture like gangsta-rap, hard rock and punk. But they have different reasons.
I got influenced by punk culture on some of my posts so that's how I profane. But I know, politeness keeps normal(or better) mood. But it's justifiable when you're angry and if it matches your target so it wouldn't be a slander which it's making a mess.

My vrother had me swearing at an early age. He taught me the middle finger when I was 5 by saying, "If anyone makes you angry, just give them the middle finger, but not Mom or Dad."
I was swearing like a sailor by the age of 12, and started slowing down when I hit 16. Now I don't swear as much unless I'm extremely angry...or bored...
I personally find nothing wrong with curse words...where in any of the holy books does it state, "Thou shalt not say the following words: Fuck, Shit, Ass, Cock, Dick, Bitch, Tits, Piss, Bastard, Cunt, blah blah there's a million of em.
