Protesting Soldiers Funeral

I'm in agreement with the former ACLU director. Pushing back these protests whether they are supportive or critical of any event is an infringement of the rights that we all have.
Do I like what these people have to say? Absolutely not but, as anyone I'd consider a true patriot you'd defend to the death, their right to say it.
I really dislike these nutjobs but, first they silence these fanatics, then the government has the ability to silence talk radio or t.v. then finally your internet speech.

Fucking Westboro church. At least they'll most likely die out in a generation. Though I would be a happy man to see the whole family killed.http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7735501683185935638#
Honestly just try to watch this entire thing without cringing. The head of the church seems mentally ill.
+rep for the link. it was so twisted. i have a very dark sense of humor, almost dark enough to laugh at those freaks, but not quite. it was almost scary how devoted those cultist are. the way they indoctrinate the children is border line child abuse or endangerment. but like you said, at least they'll most likely die out.

I kind of laughed at how the head of the cult is just like "UR 2 DUM 2 UNDRSTAND" and the chick who smiled when she said knew she was going to hell kind of reminded me of something from Higurashi, but yeah, most bits just made me facepalm.

That family's all mentally ill. should they be doing this? no, i dont think they would like if one of there family members died and someone protested them. but do they have the right to do this? yes they do, its one of the rights that we all have and love. and to be honest, once the wars over and the solders stop dieing, they'll find something new to hate on so they can stay in the media's attention.

Now I see this as an excellent time to quote Voltaire.
"I may not agree with what you have to say but I will defend to the death your right to say it"
This is what soldiers fight for, the freedoms of the people they are protecting, and if they happen to be defending ungrateful idiots then so be it, when there are no soldiers left willing to defend them they can have fun being killed wholesale.

Is there really no limit to the freedom of speech? Honestly im not that familiar with these, but if there isnt so you mean KKK people can do what these people are doing and just say what they want in public or in front of an african american church and say something like you will all go to hell?
acctually yes it is legall for the KKk to gather and protest. As long as they dont do anything violent are try to burn a cross the police can't od anything but sit there and monitor them.
I remember a while back watching some KKK grouping together and the cops sitting in their cars watching them.

I was unaware that cross burning wasn't protected. If Flag burning is protected I find it odd that a religious symbol is off limits. Hell a Crucifix of Jesus submerged in a jar of Urine is protected as free speech. Very odd for a cross to be protected...
In case people don't believe me go ahead and google "Piss Christ" which on a side note is one reason why I really fucking hate the national endowment for the arts. Wasting $15,000 on a jar of piss, someones bypass surgery or knee replacement could have been paid for with that much money.

It isn't that its a cross its that a burning cross is consedered a threat. or at least in some states im not sure if it is in all.

Kind of Important
A ray of Tsunlight.
In order to save all of you a stupidly long rant, I'll just say I really disagree with what those guys do/say. And I can say with certainty, that I'd probably beat one of them over the head with a pipe if I saw that kind of shit going down near me.
Freedom of speech/assembly, and all that sure. But there should be limits, moral limits at least.

Who shall we grant the power to decide who can say what people can say, where they can say it, and when they can say it? Dangerous territory if I do say so myself. Freedom of Speech like any ACLU member will tell you is designed to protect the minority schools of thought instead of simply protecting whatever the majority says is correct. Going any deeper than that leads to discussions on mob mentality and mob rule. Dreadfully unpleasant things.

Fancy that.

I'll keep it simple: They have the right to protest that shit, and we have the right to ridicule the shit out of them.
Any pussy moral argument that people come up with against their right to protest a funeral just squelches the expression of dissent (for an example of one, read refutation of it in previous post).

Yea protesting a funeral what fucked ups. Soldiers who give there lives for there nation should aloud to be honored without Disrespect.

Not giving a soldiers a proper funeral is crazy!!! (Well we know that some soldires which went to invade other countries would do some immoral act Ex: Killing for fun,Raping and others.) But not all of them were like that.
Most of those soldiers only follow the order of the countries. if those people didnt like what the soldiers done shouldnt they went straightly to the goverment and tell them what their mind had in the moment. (No matter what we said soldier is our country protector which dare to sacrifise their life for their country and people so SHOW SOME RESPECT People!!!)

I hope they do that protest ban for all the states(illegal to interfere with a funeral)
You may have the right to protest but you are abusing it when you are protesting a funeral.
WTF? They died for us and now your protesting?

Do us all a favor and stay home on election days.
Think long and hard about what you just said. You believe the government should be able to tell the people what they can protest and where they can protest? Ignore that it's a funeral. What if it was a bar mitzvah that was being protested? Perhaps a PETA event, a gay pride parade, or the local chess club. Do you really want other people to tell you where and what you can protest?
Today, it's the Westboro baptist church on the chopping block. Due to mission creep, next week it'll be you in their place.
Edit; Before you think I'm some left wing anti-military nutjob. I have family and friends who are serving or have served in all branches of the military.

Basically,What Rbz said. It's simple really everyone has the right to protest and then everyone has the right to take the piss out of them. This really seems Identical to a certain argument in England when the BNP got into European parliment.

I really don't give a crap on what or where people protest and don't think the government should but a funeral is a exception for me anyways.
I mean its a frickin funeral and the last thing i would want at the funeral of my kid or someone are some protesters saying "its good that they are dead" or "they are going to hell".
It would piss me or anyone it happens to off.
Also try not to get so mad over a post...

.Also try not to get so mad over a post...Sorry for your misconception but, I wasn't mad. I simply feel that you don't understand the intentions of the founding fathers with the first amendment. I also feel you don't understand the ramifications of others dictating where people can exercise these rights.
You may think it's fine to prevent protests at/near funerals, then somebody else thinks it inappropriate to protest near churches. From there everybody and their grandmother will try to enforce their own beliefs on what and where it is acceptable to protest.

Anyway back to the topic.
I dont understand why these people can see it as being ok to protest a funeral, being it for a soldier or not.
