Reps.

No, this is not a cleverly reorchestrated attempt at rep gains. No, I do not expect anyone to fall for the hidden reverse psychology of such a thread.
It's simple curiosity.
What does everyone think of Reputation as a whole?
Canned responses of "Who cares? I don't." or "It's just a number." will not be accepted, because both you and I know that's bull.
Anyway, I'll offer mine opinion first:
I don't think anyone can log onto an online forum and not care what their reputation count is.
For me, personally, even if I tell myself something like "It doesn't matter" or "It's silly to care", I still feel a slight elation at a repup, and I instantly find myself recounting my last five posts at a repdown. I think it's part of the inherent removal of a bit of the anonymity of the internet that a rep count provides.
When your rep goes up, it shows that someone, somewhere has found something you said to be useful. Or funny. Or maybe you uploaded something they got a good fap out of. Conversely, losing a point means that your antics have annoyed someone to a point where a retort will not suffice, and they feel the need to downrep. It removes that feeling that a lot of forums give that you're simply talking to a semi-sentient, partially coherent wall of sticky notes.
What do you guys think?

I find a joyous feeling when I get one, that much is obvious. But I cannot recall how I got to where I am with mine, with only a select few. I haven't gotten -rep yet, but if I do then I probably deserved it.

Reputation points create an odd situation in forums like Fakku that don't tell you when you got a positive or negative rep point. You could go to sleep with five points and wake up to see five points, thinking that nothing has changed, when in reality, someone negative repped you and someone else positive repped you.
That kind of makes it all seem pointless. But I've been a member of a forum that kept track of positive and negative reps, and knowing every time it happens, and why it happened, generally causes trouble. If you get a negative rep here, you just try to think about how you might have upset someone and try to be better. But if you can see that someone took away a point because you said something as a joke, and they took it seriously, you feel the need to do something. If you get a negative rep because you say that you're gay, and the person just hates gay people, DRAMA happens. And nobody wants that. Knowing how your rep points fluctuate is troublesome.
Anyways, rep points do seem to further obliterate the anonymity that the internet offers, but anonymity isn't a big deal on forums that require memberships anyway.
I do hate it, but I care about my rep points. I feel good about having them, and I'm happy when they increase. I'd say most people feel the same, though of course the amount of happiness differs from person to person. And I hate when I get a negative rep. I hate that I wonder who gave it to me and wonder if I should be a total asshole to the person I suspect gave it to me. But I'm a self-conscious person.
Just curious, does anybody ever explain why they gave a negative rep? When you see a post that you negative rep, do you post in that thread saying that you gave the negative rep? Or does everyone love to hide behind that anonymity?

positive reps are nice. and really, i don't understand why would anyone negative rep someone. i mean, the reason to +rep is easily understandable, but annoyed enough to -rep is...
anyway, i'm still at 0 rep, so my opinion doesn't have much weight to it...

I honestly couldn't care less. When I used to be on this site constantly I was really proud to have a lot of rep (back when 20 rep was a lot) but now that I came back after about a year and don't visit every 30 minutes I don't care. Getting more rep is like having the sports team I'm cheering for win when I don't usually support either team and it will have no effect on a team I do like.
I care more about the fact that this topic will likely bring up more bullshit about removing negative rep. I guess I care almost solely on principle now as opposed to when I had a somewhat real stake in it but it still grinds my shit to think that people want a system that shows "reputation" without the ability to show that someone's reputation is shit.
But I digress...

I feel like we just did this . . .
As I have said before, I'm not sure why negative rep even exists. Being an idiot is its own punishment; de-repping is not necessary. For those concerned about heedless de-repping, a system in which only positive rep was allowed would allow people to reward the good and ignore the bad, just as effective. Users might use positive rep more sparingly if they knew it couldn't be reversed, but that's probably fine.
But either way, I don't think anyone really judges based on rep points, except for perhaps new members until they are around enough to learn some of the forum personalities.
We all know who we respect, who will post intelligent things, who will find cool stuff to show us, and so forth from discussions, debates, and forum posts, not from some little number next to their names.

Whitelion and ShaggyJebus make many valid points.
Simply put, while reputation may only be a number, it becomes something to identify with: the more you have the better, as with most things in life. I'm proud of my reputation because I've gotten them all through my posts and not my uploads, which I never had any to begin with. But the system as we all know it is also cracked up. Uploaders with reps in the +100s exist, and although we know that they deserve it for uploading great content for others to enjoy, it warps our perception on rep points and what we actually get it for. The -reps I won't say, and should be pretty obvious by my post after said dumb antics. The noobs are the only exception where a -rep is just a waste of time, unless the exceptionally dumb comes by. What's also fucked up is that people can be in the negatives then all the sudden dip back into the positives, and I've even seen cases where people just give rep for the fun of it due to some random action. (Yes, I remember the thread where this one guy posted stuff about reps and got reps for it... wtf?) Nowadays I'm a lot more freer with the rep-giving, and I'll usually say who gets the rep.
In the end, all that matters is the duration/quality-of-posts. After a while, regular users get to know each other through frequent interaction, and all that matters is the username. (At least for me, I recognize people more by their names than avatars or anything else.) I've also mentioned this before, but I think the rep-system is pointless and unecessary, but since it's here and Jacob won't remove it, it's here to stay and there's not much we can do about it.

i shall give you a rep for being very modest ( first +rep always feels the best)
on a serious note people who say they don't care are usually the people have have very low rep or are in minus. I care about rep but it's not life or death on the forum, there are people with millions of posts with only 2 rep, so have fun and rep will come when it comes that's how i see it

Other than letting me know that people appreciate my uploads i don't care for it that much, even though i dislike it when it's being abused.
A perfect example would be when i passed Jacob in rep and people started to neg me daily (and rep him) just so that i wouldn't have more than him, it's like, so im an asshole because i uploaded so many games that i passed the admin?
People on this site also seems to have the tendency to neg someone for simple things like not liking a joke or not agreeing with the other persons choice of favourite game, which is pretty fuckin retarded as well.
And i still want a rep log

I think rep. is just for fun and just to give something to somebody who done good thing to you. Rep. isn't important but its good thing. Still I'm at 0 rep. but who cares

@KloWn: I think you take the repping a wee bit too seriously. Why only me? What i said wasn't much diffrent from what the other said.
I don't see the point in having a rep-function if it ain't used properly, a neg-rep is for someone who's done/said some dumb shit, not for someone who happends to like something you don't etc.

Lmao. Second time I saw him use it and it's still amusing.
As for reps, the first few post pretty much sum it all up. I've not much else to add.[/h]

Of course, the argument can be turned against me because I do care about my rep as stated earlier, but because it's only I have so little rep that it matters when you have so much; the way that you acculumated reps just warps the system, not that it's your fault, but point in case proven. I don't see many people de-repping others, and if they get de-repped, 1) they deserve it or 2) they're just being dicks. Being on the forums long enough, we can tell who's being a dick and who isn't, and I suppose that's what matters.
