So, should Barry-O have accepted?

If you haven't heard by now, stop masturbating and put the hentai away. This morning Barack Obama was nominated for and accepted the Nobel Peace Prize.
Personally I think he should've turned it down. He's going to take more heat than its worth for it and it'll just further tarnish his reputation.

It's more insulting to turn it down. He already gets heat from right-wing Conservatives anyway, so it doesn't matter whether he accepted it or not. They'll just use this as an excuse to further bitch about how nothing, or rather nothing they like, has happened and he hasn't done anything his first term.

Frankly I want to know what he has done to deserve it? Not that he's done anything bad, but the Nobel Peace Prize is one of the highest honor's you can receive. Not that he won't do something in the future, I just want to know exactly he did to deserve a nomination? I know of nothing he's done so far that deserves such a high honor as that. So my answer will depend on whether or not what he was nominated for is worthy of the award. Though then again Bono won one so I guess it's not that amazing of an award anyway.
I disagree I think it would have shown a lot of humility if he had turned it down.
[Edit] Here's his acceptance speech. Hmmmmm

Whle Obama getting it is subject to debate, Obama turning it down is an insult to the nobel prize. Obama would have taken a lot of heat form that more than from accepting it.

I find this nothing less than disgusting, almost vomit inducing. Ghandi never won the Nobel peace prize despite numerous nominations and yet Obama who has done nothing except spend a country into debt and played the blame game from day one received the honor. This was nothing more than a political maneuver by the the Norwegian Parliament as they appoint the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
Ghandi deserves a posthumous honor more than Obama deserves the honor at this point in time.
Edit (11:06EST): Since I didn't answer the question. No, he should not have accepted the honor as he has done nothing to deserve it.

I agree with FPOD totally. In fact, I was discussing this with my father just an hour ago, and I really can't stomach Obama's acceptance of the Nobel Peace Prize since I believe he has done nothing incredible to earn it.

FPOD has almost completely said my opinion on this. I was completely stunned to hear that Obama recieved the Peace Prize.
What has he done so far? Try? So have many of people, but you don't see them recieving Peace Prizes. The people want results, not plans.

As Tsuyaru pointed out, it probably would've been more insulting to have turned the award down. Either way, Obama was definitely going to take some heat (no matter what he did). What disgust me more than the choice of the committee, is the response I'm seeing from people who have witnessed this event.
Sure, Obama (as well as his cabinet and other government officials) hasn't managed to change much since his inauguration back in january. Sure the economy is fucked up and getting a job isn't easy (I would know, I've been trying the past two years and haven't had any luck, aside from an interview which didn't seem to work out.) And sure, the war is going on today and people are still being killed almost mindlessly.
But if you put that aside for a second, and really look at the situation, Barack Obama seems to be trying. Call me a brainwashed Obama follower if you want, but I just don't agree with many of the negative responses I'm seeing. Obama, unlike former presidents, has spent a great amount of time attempting to interact with and appeal to the people and continues to do so. Since he became President, he has done a great number of motivational speeches (across the world-- probably a reason for him getting the prize). People, who happen to be against Obama and his policies, have even supported my last statement by saying that Obama is too much of a people person and spends too much time talking.
But at least he's doing something. I was going to write more, but I lost motivation midway.
Unfinished thought is unfinished.

There is also the condition that Obama is, for lack of any better terms, damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. I mean, he came into office in this huge quagmire (giggity) and pretty much any action would have had the same short-term consequences.

I completely agree with you. Honestly what has Obama done to deserve the Nobel peace prize?

The nominations of CNN "Hero's" are more deserving than Obama. Being an inspirational speaker shouldn't be criteria for such an honor. Also you failed to consider or mention that the decision for him to receive the award was made two weeks after he became president of the united states.
Many were shocked by the unexpected choice so early in a presidency that began less than two weeks before the Feb. 1 nomination deadline for the prize and has yet to yield concrete achievements in peacemaking.
Link.
Second Link.
Pure politics, nothing more.

Oh yeah, I realize that. But even so, people jump at any chance that they can to criticize Obama. Why is he taking so much heat when HE didn't make the decision? He definitely said that he feels he doesn't deserve it.
That's like me nominating Jacob for garfest just because he runs the site, Jacob saying he doesn't think he deserves to be there but will try being gar, and then he ends up being flamed for it. Why flame Jacob when he never asked to be nominated in the first place?
(Random analogy, but it makes sense and is simple to understand.. or at least I'd think so.)
And as aforementioned, either way people would be complaining and he was going to take heat. This is nothing new.

I like Obama, but I don't think he deserved it. Some of the more insipid punditry in this thread aside, he hasn't had results yet, as people have pointed out.
I will say this: you CAN and should be able to win the Nobel prize for being an inspirational speaker/leader. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that concept. That was a big part of what MLK did. However, if the speeches and leadership are going to inspire change, that change has to actually happen. The results have to be in. I hope Obama succeeds in inspiring people and that both his words and actions do improve the world. However, it's too early to say if he has been successful or not in this regard.
As for acceptance, I'm not sure it mattered a lot. He needed to recognize himself the whole lack of actual results yet, and he did to some degree in his speech. If he had declined it, explained why, and was humble about it, I don't think it would have been spitting in the face of the Nobel committee. At the same time, if he accepts it as he did, is honest about the fact that he hasn't achieved his goals yet, but expresses desire to continue to press on and use the forum as a chance to highlight what still needs to be done with respect to promoting peace, I have no problem with that either.

I'm not attacking him, nor are the majority who don't think he deserved it. The logic is very simple, "He has done nothing for the honor and thus should not have been granted it". If he was a humble man he should have declined the honor and added that he hasn't done anything yet to deserve the reward at this time and that he'll work towards results that would make him actually worthy of the honor.
Obama is taking heat for accepting an award that he doesn't deserve. There were people who have done FAR more to help peace in the world than an empty suit running around apologizing to every other country. Obama accepting this award only reduces the significance of the awards of other laureates.

The only reason Obama was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize is because much of the world is happy to see the end of the Bush era and like the fact that Obama will not continue it. And no, Obama did not spend the country into debt because Bush beat him to that. I don't think I need to remind you that Bush went into office with the largest surplus our country ever had only to spend almost double that by the time he left. Granted Obama failed epicly with the failure of health care reform, however he still has 3+ years to go. And why are people so mad that the president of our country received the most prestigious award in the world? That is called a compliment.

Lol, FPoD said it neatly but...I wanna add one more thing. This is why I think that only the scientific Nobel Prizes are deserving of any respect. I'm not saying that the others are lower or anything...but the other categories are by themselves subjective that political facades like this are inevitable.

How about we actually give him the award after he has some actual results instead of speeches and promises.
Also, I wasn't a fan of Bush either but, the "stimulus" bill has increased our debt by more than Bush did. Also Bush had no control over the actual spending. Blame congress for that, since they were the ones with the purse strings. The congress was majority Democrat in the second term so.
Again, people are mad because Obama hasn't done anything for the award. Other than "Not being Bush".

Don't get me wrong, I do not think that Obama is a godsend. Yes I voted for him but I am a little disappointed by the performance so far. And I said " much of the world is happy to see the bush era over". I am not much of the world. Also I feel stupid for asking this here but am still new to the site so I will ask : How do you get somebody's post in that box that I saw in your post?
