What effect do you think this will have on the future? I'm pulling for genetically engineered babies to be smarter, better, faster, and stronger. I hope this doesn't lead to making men obsolete, but I HIGHLY doubt that that is a legit possibility.

Sorry that my OP is so lacking, but I really don't have much to say on the subject, and just wanted the opinions of others.

I think this is the start of something along the lines of the movie Gataca or gundam seed, with there basically being anything from hate to all out war between the deGENErates and the test tube brats. Honestly its a good thing, to be better than others, its because of competition that our economy works at all. And it will probably develop people that are impervious to disease, more tollerant to radiation, etc. But I do hope I die before this is developed far enough to create situations like those because of all the moral/ethical bs that will no doubt be involved. So its sorta a win-loose thing for me.

To me, it means there's no use for males anymore <_<' I'm not down with that.

Human's keep trying to play god too much.We do this everyday in the form of doctors.

Humans will use these people as experiments. Experiments break out and revolt. Mass Panic. Millions of deaths. Ends in War. Good bye Original humans.
In reality, I have no idea what this could come to. Sperm Backs might be out of business, as they won't need males anymore. This means even less men will get laid.
EDIT: Seems it's just MOUSE sperm at the moment, so don't panic.
Frankly, they say it's going to be used to help the fight against cancer rather than impregnation.
Sounds like a plan. Let's just keep it that way.

Doctor's are doctor's desu.Sure it's good that they save people from dying but stuff like this? Altering the way babies are made.

Are you suggesting mice aren't dangerous?

Still technically deciding who lives and dies.
Edit: Humankind has always modified itself with the available surroundings. How is this really any different?

Looks like science-fiction is becoming just science. Although it did say it was just with mice, they're obviously going to try it with human sperm as well, and I would like to see how this turns out.

YOU MEN BETTER START SHAPING UP
NOW THAT WE NO LONGER NEED YOU MUAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA.
On a serious note, quite an impressive study. I am amazed that it hasn't made more headlines (I saw only one news blog discuss it). Then again, global issues at this moment are also a bit more important...

The technology to create sperm is farther from the technology to genetically engineer humans. Sperm is little more than a casing in which to deliver DNA. Until we can manipulate DNA, this technology would be, at best, used to help an infertile man, by using his own DNA.
There is no danger of men being replaced, as by that time we could engineer people to have whatever features are desirable. More Gattaca rather than a planet of women only.

We should improve space-flight and terra-forming and look for other planets to colonize. Engineering mouse sperm can wait a couple hundred years, in my opinion.

(Please look up what a joint to Alpha Centaury would take... that's spitting distance on interstellar scale BTW).
...also, as long as we're humans we're unlikely to survive the journey (either dying from radiation or sheer old age).
So engineering mouse sperm and cracking the human genome is very much a must, so humans can adapt to different environments and survive. Colonizing the bottom of the sea and the less hospitable portions of the planet could be a start.
...moving into space is a long way off and we won't be able to do so until our bodies have been engineered for it either way.

You realize they still need to get the sample from testes. To make my point clear, you still need "men". Or you could always just get impregnated by this one guy.
...It's gonna be me.

My imagination made this post legendary.
On the topic at hand I don't see a need for men to panic. I cant see a woman in a relationship going "oh no thanks, I will go to the doctor to get pregnant".
