"Violence" gene gives murderers reduced sentences

Recently, there have been an increasing amount of court cases where criminals have used the 'violence' gene to use as evidence in their defence. As we all know, criminals suffering from mental illness typically get a substantial reduction in their sentence if found guilty; a leniency given because the criminal may not understand the full consequence of their actions.
However, late last year a man in Italy received one year off his sentence when evidence of a so called 'violence' gene was presented to the judge.

What do you guys think about this? Even if such a gene exists does it really warrant criminals getting shorter sentences?
I personally think that this is BS. Being mentally ill and not knowing that killing someone has dire consequences is one thing, but when your fully aware of what is happening around you and you decide to commit some evil deed because your genes told you to... That ain't cool.

I'm more interested in finding the stupid gene. It needs to be wiped from the face of the earth.
A violence gene? Sounds like some made-up bullshit. I find it hard to believe that someone could go up to the judge and say "Well, my actions was because this certain pattern in my DNA." There are way too many genes, and to pin-point the one that makes you do violent acts? Bullshit. If what a certain gene does is so easy to find, we would have a lot less genetic disorders in the world.

Yeah, that sounds like bullshit. But why not give it a shot? Beats spending the rest of your life sharing a prison cell with a white guy named Muhammad.

People always have that urge to blame. They blame their genes. A totally made-up BS.
RAPIST: I can't control my actions because of my "RAPE" gene.

I can't work, must stay home, still have lots of money and play games and fuck bitches all day because of my "Gamer-who-needs-money-and-women-without-doing-anything-for-it" gene.

Genes obviously plays a part in peoples behavior but if people are more likely to kill/rape/whatever people, why give them shorter sentences? castrate them and lock them up.

Yeah, if its in their genes, then that's all the more reason why they should stay locked up.

If they cant control themselves coz of this violence gene and theyd be a threat to the public, then shouldnt they be locked up in a mental asylum? If you know a lion will kill the people in the zoo, are you gonna let it loose out of its cage?

Though for the sake of argument lets assume that science proves the existence of a violence gene and that the gene makes people violent with even slight provocation. Should we really throw people in prison for something they had no control over or should they be medicated and allowed to live on their own provided they stay on their meds like paranoid schizophrenic?

Ridiculous. Stupid jurymen, they have the power utterly fuck up your life but most of them know nothing to shit about common sense. Violence gene? Even I wouldn't put up with bullshit unless it's proven.

Also, I'd hate to be the judge in this case. Give the defendant a full sentence and the media will say your some crazy dude with no sympathy and morals, thus ruining your career. Or give the defendant a reduced sentence and the media will say your some crazy dude for letting a criminal take a lighter sentence and that you must have been blackmailed to accept the evidence, also ruining your career.
Good thing I'm not really into law.

Well if violent genes exist, I must have: violent blood, cells, organs, cilia, ect.
No see now, an act of violence is an act of violence.
I've been put into special schools before as I was classified Emotionally and Behaviorally disturb. I was able to overcome my challenges and was able to return to mainstream schools like every other teenager.
This violent gene is more of an excuse poor self control than anything.

Actually, if you think about it, man as a species is full of conflict (not just war, but right down to arguments and stuff). That is why I always say "Peace is a lie", and with that said, I say it is possible that that thing exists (though they should have thought of a better name for it).

If the person is truely ill, I think its acceptible, but if its used as an excuse just to get out of jail time, hell no.

I'm just gonna go ahead and say one thing. No opinion either way about the article, BUT, anyone who says, "Well let's just kill everyone with this violence gene" will make me lawl.

There's a whole argument in the scientific community regarding the issue of "nature vs. nurture". At the moment, most scientists agree that while genes makes a significant contribution to how you behave, it is the environment that you are raised in that will have the most impact on your personality. Your actions are, therefore, judged as of your own, as is the responsibility for said action.
