World population.... Choose!!

Well, the population of China is one of its assets, that's not to be forgotten. It is not a coincidence that the world's first in terms of population is also one of the most influential country. However shitty it was, their exploiting their extremely big and for some unidentified population, gave them relations where they needed them, within the other big, developed country. Then they started getting their population out, all over the world. And so they developed.

I'm not saying China got where it is only thanks to its abundant population but it surely did help.

Huge amount of population do help with the economical condition of the country... only if the people are productive. And make sure that the govt are not corrupt.

Sadly, I agree with you. However, the people of China is incredibly productive. Not to mention that they're amazingly innovative. Try living in Indonesia, and you'll know how much of a shithole here.

Maybe some day... I'm going to try finishing my studies before exploring the world ^^. And yea, Chinese students are becoming the most demanded export-student in my country, they try getting them even in grade school, and it's a fact they are good. They do well even while learning French which is language I myself find sometimes absurd.

We are not just talking about China but about world population control in general.

Some countries I believe are heading in that direction, maybe not a direct law but something similar to ensure the population won't be making children any time soon.

Economy, government, power, or even space, are those goo reasons why laws should exist in the first place? Probably not, but it seems to me governments don't want to think up for a better solution other than their own.

The world as a whole appears to be getting close to it. Some countries more than others.

I don't think the economy is breaking down as a direct result of population growth. Its true its a contributing factor but more people means more hands to produce goods and services and assuming they do a higher GDP. By contract, as Tegumi said, more people means more potential problems such as hospitalized, homeless, elderly, etc people.

Yes and yes, depending on country.

This relates to the first question. I don't think the world is over populated as much as people are concentrating too much in certain area's. There is a lot of open unused land in the world and I guarantee people will go to live there if a city just turned up there.

Take New York City for example. There are people EVERYWHERE in NYC. If you drive 2 or 3 hours west into northeast Pennsylvania there is comparatively no one there. Someone could say NYC is overpopulated which isn't too hard to imagine but regions like that part of Pennsylvania are underpopulated. If a big city like New York turned up in that area with jobs people would go to live there. So I wouldn't say the world is overpopulated by a strict definition (people per unit area), its just certain areas are very very heavily populated.

Regarding law's on population control I can see both sides of the argument. I guess my position would be that if someone is able to support (in all senses of the word) their kid then let them have it. However if someone cannot support a child, for example a person has 7 kids already and have reached a financial limit, I wouldn't want him/her to have an 8th. On a larger scale, if classroom's are full, build more. It generates jobs and adds value to the area. If highway's are too crowded, make them bigger, spend money on public transportation, and so on. I don't see how that is a bad thing. Of course this all hinges on the government having the money to spend in the first place. The economics of actually doing all of this is for another thread.

Yes, we definitely need to control our population~
more people = more consumption of resources
and a lot of our consumption ends up landfilled or incinerated, which means it's not coming back to us anytime soon

Ever seen Soylent Green? That's our future. It was stated earlier that people don't have children when they can't support themselves. That's bull, people do that every fucking day, because the government is dumb enough to curb natural selection by handing out money so that these "unfortunate" families can provide for themselves. This leads to more people abusing the current systems, meaning it's a greater drain on resources than it would be if these families were supporting themselves rather than being supported by a government facility.

Yeah, it sounds like a conspiracy theory, but this is what happens in countries like the US every day. People will abuse a system in which a government gives out "free" money. I feel that every country needs to limit people to 2 children per female. That means that even if you fuck up and have children with some douche that you don't want to spend your life with, you aren't spitting out more children for the "right guy". Two children per female, then forced abortions.

Money definitely plays a big role in this case and earning and spending money is becoming a big question for millions, if not hundreds of millions around the world today as we speak.

I know there are better solutions to the case population control, but I see nothing progressing with the citizens around the world because they don't take this matter serious. Some time in the future governments WILL take action, and when that happens there is nothing we can do.

That's why I made the Soylent Green reference. A quick rundown of the movie:
- Overpopulation has led to food shortages
- Food shortages lead to riots
- Government uses dumptruck-like vehicles to scoop up rioters and throw them in the back for detention
- Government actually kills and turns these people into the new food source, called Soylent Green

If that's the case then I see a dark future coming because of our irresponsible ways of consuming. ( Shortage of resources is also a big time issue here)

Common misconception, the world's harvest of food annually far exceeds the global demand for food annually, like over double iirc. The reason why there is starving children isn't because we can't grow or harvest enough to supply them but because the system of the distribution of food globally is shit and costs too much to do.

Yeah warlords in third world countries hold all the food in those areas and use it to control the people. Which is fucked up because America grows enough food to feed 10 billion people.

Then again the worlds harvest is too large. It's like having 100 rabbits who make 10 new rabbits every month. If you eat 12 rabbits per month you'll eventually run out of food.

I remember reading reports saying that the US takes around 70% of the world's food supplies.

However its ironic that if the food was redistributed all over the world,the populations would surge dramatically and then the new population will require other needs such as water and medicine to continue their survival.
