Aliens: Colonial Marines

Hate double posting, but I figure this is still worth mentioning, so whatever. IGN had a 2 hour hands-on preview on the game over the weekend, including a playtrhough of the first mission and a look at the multiplayer. Link below.

Pretty long history, my friend told me about this last night and it's just weird.

I don't think this game is bad so much as it is extremely disappointing. I mean I'm having fun playing the game, but everything (with exception to the sound) is just very low quality. This game may have been fairly well received about four years ago, but after that "gameplay" demo at E3 (or PAX/wherever) that got everybody's hopes up... it's just not acceptable. Nothing in that demo is even remotely close to where the game currently stands.
I'm starting to wonder how badly this'll affect Gearbox's rep. I mean, besides Borderlands, the only other decent IP they got is Brothers in Arms. Even then, what happened here is bound to cost Gearbox some future sales. A game developer can't survive with just one good title under it's belt without consumer backing, which they've most likely lost with the combination of Duke Nukem and Colonial Marines.

This is a bad game. You'll admit it eventually.
If you've paid attention to my posts before then you've noticed that I tend to rant about games being morphed into other, more commercially established games, for broader appeal. That was the case for Dead Space and Mass Effect, but it's not here. This is an outright cod clone. If anyone has ever played a modern cod game, they'll sense the familiarity immediately. This game has the same dumb fuck human AI that has an aversion to cover and runs toward you as you shoot, while the aliens seem to have been struggling with a down syndrome epidemic among their kind. Half the time you have to rely on your equally inept—and even more retarded—ally to open doors because this game needed the authentic cowadoody experience. This is not to mention the horrible checkpoint placements, some of which will have you go into a short coma to protect you from the agonizing boredom of having to wait for your allies to finally shut the fuck up and open the door in front of them again.
"But Rbz, there are references to the Aliens movie throughout the game and shit," says a fictional person who is desperately trying to find any redeemable quality, but is inadvertently assisting my tirade as I transition to my next point in response to theirs: all the references and fanservice only serve to remind the player what a disservice this game is to the Aliens franchise. It may make you excited, but it doesn't make the game any less shit. There's also the irritating clipping that has enemies and allies running through you. It turned the power loader battle into the most frustrating event in the entire game.
Oh yea, I beat the game on hardened.

Duke NukemIt's funny because this game is Duke Nukem all over again, except I can confidently pin the blame on gearbox this time around. It was gearbox's decision to outsource the development while making Borderlands 2 its top priority. I'm sure the janitor got to tweak colonial marines a bit while everyone else was busy scouring reddit for memes. Gearbox also marketed the game as if they created it based on the demo, having developers talk to a camera about how fans will love this totally not-bull-shitty canon title.
Randy Pitchford is a persuasive guy. He seems very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the product his company is developing, which, along with his confident tone, helps sell the idea. In light of everything that has occurred, what I just said serves to out him as a lying, manipulative cunt; a typical corporate cocksucker. It makes sense for him to be CEO. So, with regard to gearbox's rep, I hope it is greatly diminished, functioning as a bull shit deterrent.

This is a bad game. You'll admit it eventually.I wouldn't really say that I was a fanboy. I love the movies (the first three, anyway) to death, sure, but I'm just not that critical, is all. Nothing about this game has made me outright rage when playing. The most I feel is disappointment at what could've been and instead what I got. I am pretty pissed at Gearbox for all their bullshit over the years, though. Disappointment aside, I still think this game isn't that bad. Nowhere near being worth the $60 I paid, but there's some fun to be had. I'm pretty sure my enjoyment from this game is largely due to me playing with my friends over Live on both the coop and multiplayer. Game is flawed, but legitimately fun with friends. Besides, I've played worse games than this, which may have dulled the impact of the games quality (or lack, thereof). Fuck, I couldn't even bring myself to finish Operation Raccoon City, which remains as the only game that I've sold without first beating the main story. Now THAT was a game worthy of hating as it was damn near impossible to finish on solo, there were so many problems.
I never really cared for Borderlands. Hell, I honestly wouldn't have batted an eyelash if Gearbox completely scrapped Borderlands 2 in favor of bringing ACM to match what was shown at E3. They could've been the fucking heroes of the year for making a good game from a popular franchise, then come back to Borderlands 2 on their own time. But no, they decided to fuck around with more projects than they could handle and piss everyone off. ACM was literally the only reason I even paid attention to that developer, and they managed to somehow rush a game when they were supposed to have been developing it for 6 or so years.
Surprisingly, I actually feel sorry for SEGA, who commissioned this game only for the people they hired to sit on it for several years, using SEGA's money for personal projects, and ultimately outsource the game to some other developer to work on it in their stead. I wouldn't be the slightest bit surprised if SEGA sued. TBH, I'd probably support them if they did. Either way, Gearbox is in some serious shit and is going to need to be very careful and figure out how they're going to deal with this mess.

I haven't played the game, however if you guys think like this and if this guy think it's like this
Spoiler:
Also, if gearbox released the game before borderlands 2 then they probably wouldn't have as much backlash as they'll soon get.

Therein lies the problem. Anything can be fun with friends. Even the abortion you couldn't finish would be fun with a friend. Doesn't stop it from being a shit game.
My favorite part about this incident is that the moment it was official that ACM was a waste of life, I put my trollface on, anticipating Angry Joe's inevitable whine-fest, because just a week prior he made this:
Spoiler:
People didn't hesitate to rub his face in it.

It's not just the coop, the single player is still, well... playable, which is more than I can say about Raccoon City. By myself, it is far more noticeable how retarded your teammates are in ACM, but at very least, you can still play through the game without much difficulty. Another factor in me enjoying this game could be how often I often replay a lot of older FPS games like Prey, Quake 4, and Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Again, I don't think this game is as bad as it is just a disappointment. If you compare Aliens to the aforementioned games, it's not bad at all, save for some still wonky AI. Like I said before, had this game came out a few years ago, it would've been received a lot better. But by today's standards, it's horribly outdated.
Last week, I honestly felt the same way Joe did during his top 10 on ACM. I don't think anybody could've predicted just how badly Gearbox could've fucked this game up. Sure, there's always a chance of a promising looking game having it's fair share of problems, but this is just a whole different level of quality than what was promised.

Had this game come out in 1990, it would've been the best game ever. Captain hindsight could inform us about a lot of things that could have been. Again, doesn't stop ACM from sucking. The same for its playability. Its cod clone nature makes it a dumb shooter that doesn't require much effort on the part of the player to progress, so, yea, it's "playable."
Two insightful sources worth reading. Then finally, this.
Check out the "sophisticated artificial intelligence" of the final game at 4:34.

Been playing it co-op with a m8 and so far it's alright'ish, expected worse tbh, but apparently it's the console versions that got hit the hardest.
Recently saw a Demo vs Final Product-video and I can see why people are pissed, but as I wasn't really interested in this game to begin with (got it as a birthday present) it couldn't really dissapoint me.
Hadn't it been for co-op this game would've probably been boring as fuck though.

Some hope yet for owners of the PC copy. Apparently some people found a massive config file for Aliens with a lot of disabled content and a shit-tonne of dev notes left in it. Some config mods have already been put out that makes the game actually look pretty good. Nowhere near the demo quality and lacking higher-end textures, but it's still a damn sight better than what we got. Not sure if Gearbox would actually try to fix this. But these people have just proven just how badly rushed this game was.
Here are some links to the Steam community. The first one detailing the Config file and some fixes and the second one showing some after pics of said mods below.

Oh, and I've also caught wind of an actual Demo quality mod out right now, though it reportedly drops the framerate like a lead brick. More on that in the link below.

I'm not gonna put any money on this (spent enough on the game already), but it's kinda nice (in an odd way) to see people who bought the game spending their time trying fix this mess instead of Gearbox themselves. Obviously, this is useless for console players. So we're stuck with what we got until we can finally get something out of Gearbox. Be it word of an upcoming patch or whathaveyou.

They are dedicated fans willing to spend a lot of their time attempting to give others a superior experience than what the devs delivered for fucking free. PC, mein fuhrer! Sieg heil!
They're also the reason Skyrim is the best porno to come out since Oblivion.

I have been hearing some HUGE negative feedback from this game.Is it a big let down?
Well it's mostly due to the fact of over zealous fanboys of the Aliens franchise and the amazingly true marketing of the game. Also, the development was outsourced. It had good potential but in its all it's just one big flop
