Horror games with weapons or no weapons

So do you prefer Horror/Survival games with weapons or no weapons???
No weapon gameplay only works if the horror game takes place in the middle ages, where you're in the haunted castle 'n some shit. You only have one weapon, like the sword to low back the enemy for quick escape, and more puzzles. And the surroundings should be creepy because you are in the god damn haunted castle and it takes place in the middle ages.
Weapon gameplay only works in modern times and futuristic settings. look at Resident Evil you have weapons and haz scary surroundings. But the consequence to have a weapon on your horror game, will turned it into an action game...
So your opinion???

Hmm, I think a good idea of the topic is like;
Games like Amnesia?
-OR-
Games like Arma 2 : Day Z
That's a tough one. I'm going to pass. It seems to apples-to-oranges for me.

[color=#006FFF]I prefer a horror game with weapons. While I do admire certain games for the fear they evoke by making the player feel powerless and isolated, I would much rather get spooked while still retaining the ability to shoot the hell out of whatever scared me. The fan-bases of these games usually always say they become more action oriented (e.g. Resident Evil and Dead Space), and while I can agree with them to an extent, I just don't care nearly as much as them.
I'll take my "actiony" Dead Space over something like Amnesia any day.

Honestly, when it comes to horror, what's more scary isn't just the fact if you're helpless or not, it's the environment and "feeling" the game gives you as you go through it. I have, however, noticed that most games that tend to have a more "helpless" protagonist seem to evoke more fear then a protagonist with nerves of steel and a weapon in their hand, since more people can relate to the "helpless protagonist".

It really depends on what kind of "horror" the game is. Overall, I like weapons. When I played Doom 3 the environment was intensely dark and I could hear things. The fact that aliens/zombies popped up out of no where when I turned into a small corner or hallway and threw fireballs at me did not help with me unease and nervous anticipation. I was shooting at my own shadow. Then there are games like Corpse Party that use your mind and audio to truly maximize the horror.
Even in Bioshock I was a bit apprehensive at first because in most games I don't have Splicers trying to cave my skull in with a blunt object.

Some of the others have pointed it out, but good horror games have a dark, eerie atmosphere more than whether you have a weapon or not. To answer your question though, I'd prefer to have a game that has like one or two weapons with limited ammo available.
A game I'd like to point out is Metro 2033; this is a fine example of what I like. It basically throws you into the Metro system of Moscow in 2033, after a huge nuclear war breaks out and destroys the world. They have this dark atmosphere throughout the whole game, and not just because you're traveling through dark tunnels. The ammo is scarce and the weapons are shit, especially on Ranger Hard difficulty, while having to fight an assortment of mutants. Hopefully, this answered your question.

Giant said it better than I could.
Metro has one of the most beautiful realized worlds that I have ever seen.
I especially like the part wherein you were in a part of the metro wherein it just keeps reliving its final moments.

It's quite memorable and one of my favorite games. The story was just fantastic; it kind of helps when they had a novel and the author to work with. The game play actually helped enhance Metro 2033 as well, something I didn't talk about in my previous post. The sneak system was very well done, but it had some problems I'm hoping will be fixed in Metro Last Light.

I've been waiting since 2010, when I beat Metro 2033. My wallet is ready for this.

Yeah. Some parts of the game were different than in the story though, like how in the book, there are no Rangers, but Stalkers did the exact same roles as them (either than the normal scavenging duties).
If I'm not mistaken, Last Light will continue from the "bad" killed the Dark Ones ending.

Yeah, they're not even going to use Metro 2034 as source material (continues the good ending) and create a story that focuses on Artyom (who isn't mentioned at all in Metro 2034) and how he's going to help humanity. That's what's been confirmed about the story, I believe.
I want to read both Metro 2033 and 2034 because of this game. It's something that seems like I'm going to enjoy it more with the book than just playing the games.

Personally I prefer my horror games without a combat system, unless it's a unique interpretation like Fatal Frame's camera system.
Penumbra: Overture/Black Plague, Amnesia, Corpse Party, The 7th Guest, The 11th Hour, Scratches, Amber: Journeys Beyond are some of my favorite horror titles.
Not to say I don't enjoy the likes of Doom 3, F.E.A.R and Dead Space they're great games in their own right, but... they just don't have the same effect on me as games like Amnesia or Penumbra. They're more about that jump you get every once in a while when some ungodly mutant starts crawling out of the wall towards you at a high speed and not the carefully built atmosphere that fucks with your psyche. With one of the exceptions being Metro 2033, for whatever reason that game gave me a lot of "What the fuck is going o- OH SHI-." moments.

I never liked horror games without weapons. Never found them scary. Hell, I keep thinking of every monster encounter in Amnesia as some form of high-stakes hide and go seek. Needless to say, that SEVERELY killed any fear-factor that game had for me. It's not so much that the game wasn't scary, but rather, having no option other than to run ruins any illusion of danger. I actually prefer it where you have weapons, but they just aren't that effective (or practical) at killing any of the monsters.
Metro 2033 had it best for me. Specifically the library level. Sure, you could kill every monster in the building. But considering that ammo in Metro doubles as money and is usually hard to find, that's obviously a terrible idea. Especially considering that the Librarians take up a LOT of bullets just to kill one and they can outright slaughter you if they get close. And the library is PACKED with them. That one level had me sneaking around like a camper lost in a den of sleeping bears.

It's definitely one of the best in the game, if not the best. I personally think bullets are a more realistic currency instead of something like bottle caps (Fallout).

I would say it really depends. Because while you technically have a weapon in Fatal Frame, it sure doesn't feel like it. Not to mention it pretty much rewards you for staring the ghosts straight in the face (with the whole zero shot thing), which can be heart-poundingly tense. Also while in Silent Hill you have weapons, there are some times (such as when you see Pyramid Head) where you might as well not even have one and just need to get the hell out of there.
Has anyone here played Siren? because while you do have a weapon for most of the characters you play, all enemies revive so I guess that would be a little different.

Part of the horror experience is being vulnerable, I actually just played Dead Space 2 and I like the fact that Isaac can(and will) be hurt by the necromorphs, it keeps players on their toes, so id choose weapons, as long as they are not overpowered.

It depends on the kind of horror.
For games like Amnesia, no weapons is the right choice, much more scary.
For games such as Killing Floor, weapons just make it fun and challenging.

I personally think bullets are a more realistic currency instead of something like bottle caps (Fallout). The part in the Library that got me the worst was that one trap with the ammo you find in a hole in a wall that has a Librarian grab your arm as soon as you try to pick it up. That moment simultaneously planted two scary thoughts in my head. One, these things are smart enough to set traps, and two, they fucking know that I'm here.
And I agree with the ammo as money concept. Bullets, being more practical and likely harder to come across than basic bottle caps make more sense to be used as some form of currency. And like how I mentioned earlier, shooting potential money at baddies is always a good way to discourage players from simply mowing down everyone(thing) in their path. Maintaining a level of uncertainty in the audience is always a good foundation of horror.

I didn't even think about them being smart enough to make traps, to be honest. Still, they scared the shit out of me. Plus, it was even harder when you had to find those filters to keep on breathing; it added yet even more difficulty when it was already difficult.
I also like the "bitches;" they created even more fear as you walked on the surface. Not only did you have to watch out for things running around, you had to watch out for the Demons when they were around.
