Turn Based Rpg's

Hmm people talk about Persona 3 and Persona 4, but for me the true king of turn based battles is FFX. Oh how I love it.The complex battle system is so perfect and makes for awesome battles. The next turns bar, the high damage that the attacks(up to 99999), the huuuuuuuuge monsters, the cool attacks and magics, etc.
Wow. This was a facepalm-inducing moment. To think that FFX's battle system would be called 'complex' even though you can see the next 20+ turns with no surprises and just use summons' Overdrive attacks to plow over anything that might be remotely difficult.

Meh, FF has become a bit of the staple when it comes to turn-based. They never really did anything special with it. Small tweaks compared to the previous incarnations, but the other, perhaps less well-known games, pushed the battle type.

And the summon's overdrive attacks plow anything? Sure, the story battles aren't very challenging, but the extra battles with the dark aeons and such aren't so easy to the point where aeon overdrives are enough to win.
BTW, what do you define by a complex battle system?

Final Fantasy is turn-based gaming. even though dragon quest came first i hate the first person battle system of it. but if there wasnt ff there wouldnt be any rpgs like we know them today. no rpg has made big changes to there battle systems if it is a series not much changes same goes for every game that has a sequel. i just wanted to add ff4,ff5,ff10-2,ff12 did do some big things when it comes to battle system

What's bad about knowing who's turn is next? It's predictable. By being shown the turn order, you then have a serious advantage; almost like the ability to see into the future. You know exactly when to attack and exactly when to heal. You also what effect each possible move will have on the turn order.

BTW, what do you define by a complex battle system?Something that requires strategy. That can't be solved with the usual "Attack, Attack, Attack, heal, Attack, Attack, Attack" formula. Actually, now that I think about it, complexity should be a bad thing. Simple battle systems like those in Pokemon and Persona 3 are actually among the most strategic even though they're so simple.

Wow we really don't think alike.
I think Persona 3 and Pokemon's battle systems are one of the least complex. Where sheer power, or sometimes the right element are enough to win the battles.
In FFX you have to depend on defense breakers, haste (or slow on the oponent), shields and magic shields, overdrives, etc. I find it the most complex battle system in rpg's (that i've played).
By the way, just because you know who's turn is next doesn't mean you know what attack it'll use. It doesn't give you an advantage over the oponent, it simply doesn't handicap you by being caught off guard by cheap shots (double turns and such).
I find pokemon and persona 3 very handicaping.
In pokemon, either you or your oponent is handicaped, depending on the element of pokemons you/he has.
And in Persona 3, not only can't you control your allies, but if the main character dies, it's instant game over.
Anyways, thank you for being less hostile in your last post. I didn't want this to turn into a "mine is better than yours, fuck you" discussion.

You see, my opinion of FFX is that, while you certainly can use moves to break the opponents attacks/defense/speed, it isn't necessary. Using the Attack command solves 90% of your problems. I also want to point out that the same can be applied to Pokemon, but that's only against the CPU.

Ah, but you see, a number of Pokemon can learn moves that make one think twice about doing simple type-matching like that. A Water Pokemon with Earthquake isn't going to be so easily taken down by those Electric and Grass-Poison Pokemon. You can switch out Pokemon, but odds are your opponent is going to anticipate the switch and what type you are switching to. So your opponent gets a free shot, possibly taking out the Pokemon that you thought would save you.

P4 and Digital Devil Saga have similar systems but they let you control your allies, and in the case of DDS your entire party has to be wiped out to get a Game Over.
