well I know your problems and I will help you in that First follow the following steps
1. point you pointers up to it.(You will see the 'Settings'
2.Click on that and look at screen mode(From there you will be able to work things out perfectly)
3. Enjoy the game and get Inspired(Well Not get inspired to go and do those things in the game).
P/S: Seriously.... I relly cries my heart out when i play that game. Despite I play it while my 9 years old naphew around me and they saw everythings. (Hopefully I woun't be their toys and foolk me around(they are Girls Anyways.

I think i might have done something wrong in the installation but every time i start the game with the English patch i get a black screen with an irritating clicking noise.

You must be Using windows Vista was it? It happend to me as well.. But I found better way besides Opening WMP like they said/ Instructed as..
well, here is the trick. Open that game (With/Without the english patch) and like you get the Black screen well nothing to worry about if you follow the steps as follow:
1. right click and select "return To tittle".
2. wait little while,
3.(If you got the Saved game)Right Click again and Select the Quick Load.
4. And Enjoy :D
