What makes one a hardcore gamer and ...

It's just as the title says. People often talk about a mysterious being known as the "hardcore gamer", yet I rarely see anyone define the term. So I'm curious as to how you guys define it.
Edit:
Also, what games do you guys consider to be hardcore?

Someone that plays video games as their main hobby. They're the ones who usually spend an entire day (or weeks) trying to unlock a crappy sword just so they can have every item in the game. I also believe they're the one who play multiple types of games no matter how stupid they look or sound.

I can play up to 80-110 hours a week :) I play nearly every major big titles, finishe them about 95% of them. When i play competitively i usually try to be in the top tier of players. Server and world first in WoW, 3times North American champion in RO, top 1% in Killzone 2,top 1% online in CoD4 league, just to name a few.
I own every console (I don't own a 306 but my brother in lay does, and he never uses it, so its mine for now!). I got a top of the line PC. And i keep up to date with ALOT of video game stuff. out of all my post, i would say maybe 750 of them were made in the VG section.
So that whats makes me a ''hardcore'' gamer. Lately i've calmed down, but i still have some marks. Just ask Tsujoi when i started playing Killzone, I was online from like 9 in the morning to 3am at night.I was one of the earliest bunch (without using the cheap TDM point system)to make it max rank in KZ2 :)

i guess everyone have their own def for it.
To me, when someone give over half his free time to gaming he's pretty hardcore.

I don't think HCGamer has anything to do with the played time.
When you play just a bit, you're called a Casual Gamer, and when you play a lot, you're a Gamer.
But being an HCGamer means to be the best (yes, it implies to practice a lot, so you've played it for long, sure) in one or more games. You're likely to be a competitor, because HCGamer loves every kind of challenge.

for me a hardcore gamer is someone whose gaming time make up a significant fraction of his life! more than 10%, maybe?

For me, it's anyone who spends most of their time playing games that you can't casually pick up and be good/skilled at.

When you know about everything in many games *like knowing all endings all secrets etc.* Or if you already earn money by playing in one...

When a person passes any of these three conditions:
1. Detailed knowledge of all scripted events/maps/glitches.
2. Plays the game repeatedly and can beat the hardest difficulty without dying more than once.
3. Plays the game for money.

Wikipedia defines Hardcore gamers as “Hardcore gamer is a widely used term applied to describe a type of video game player. There is currently no unanimously agreed upon definition for the term (see Usage section). Some describe hardcore gamers as those whose leisure time is largely devoted to playing or reading about video games. This type of gamer prefers to take significant time and practice on games, in contrast to a casual gamer. Many hardcore gamers pride themselves on mastering the rules or use of a game, although this is not a strict requirement. Conflicting opinion argues that it is not so much the time spent on games however, as casual gamers can spend hundreds of hours on games without ever mastering them.”
I’d say it’s someone devoted to gaming in all genres no matter what there good and will play games even when they shouldn’t be playing games. Ex. The night before final exams and they have been playing instead of studying for the past 12 days and don’t study at all and even up to 5 minutes before the test are still playing games.

A hardcore gamer is that who can't be considered 'good' at the game but instead 'unfairly better' at the game. I consider myself a hardcore gamer since I play TOW, COW and TAL for a BF2142 clan. If I were to go into a normal server (not a match) I'd normally end up in first place with a... huge difference in score. Just because someones dedicated doesn't mean they're hardcore. They've got to better than the rest.

Me, my main hobby is videogames. I agree if it's part of your life. Although I only play mmorpgs buying xp bonuses and majorly play at xp bonus times, I'm might be still hardcore, it's still the long pleasureable thing I do.

Someone who invests a ton of time into a game and is extremely skilled at it. Usually well-known in the game's community and has a good reputation for PvP.
I spend a lot of time, but I'm not hardcore because most of that time is spent afk, jumping around on rooftops, or watching porn with my boyfriend while pretending to be doing something productive.
