What VN are you playing? What do you think about it?

Since I've officially started to work this week I find myself with a lot less gaming time... still going through some of the VNs that I downloaded, but I might be forced to drop some of them. Here are some that had boasted praising reviewers but in my opinion had great flaws that stifled their supposed appeal.

1) 祝祭の歌姫 -君と紡ぐ明日への歌. I've gone through some of the songs they put up on YouTube and it appealed to me a lot. The biggest problem here though, is that despite having a rather compelling storyline (I actually did not expect this, but the growing war and how it affected the characters' daily lives subtly was very appealing) and okay-ish soundtracks, it was just too low-budgeted. The art was okay but seemed POOR (as in I can imagine seeing employees of the company fighting each other for a loaf of bread), and some supposedly-voiced dialogues were just never voiced. Of course it's still leagues better than some of the Western games I find in Lemmasoft but heck, I'm tempted to drop it just because of the overall low quality.

2) Natsu no Owari no Nirvana. TAKES. TOO. LONG TO GET TO ITS MAIN POINT! And I haven't made it, mind you, because most of its time were spent on gags and tsukomis and the protagonist suffering what I view as some of the biggest discrimination ever by all the women around him. I've read reviews where this was supposed to be one helluva nukige - which does seem like it (I hope) with all its foreshadowing BUT BURIED AMONG THOSE FUCKING GAGS - but damn, I'm losing my patience FAST.

3) Dies Ares series. Will probably drop it altogether because of ridiculously long philosophy talks and battle descriptions. I mean, it's cool to be detailed but when you spent the LAST 30 MINUTES TALKING ABOUT NOTHING BUT PHILOSOPHY SHIT IT GETS BORING! LIKE! HELL!

EDIT: Updated 4)! =3

4) Kimi e Okuru, Sora no Hana. Probably doesn't deserve to be here actually since the story it offers is admittedly quite interesting (and with ghost heroines as a theme), but as I've mentioned before (I think?) there are some system problems that could diminish its appeal: such as prolonged delays when entering settings and changing options. The visuals are also... how to say, grainy? Feels like I could make out pixels for some reason.

Just finished a neat little Visual Novel named 'Locked In' by LuckySpecialGames. I figured that anything posted on Dischan's store must be pretty good regardless, and I wasn't disappointed this time. If I had to criticize, damn them for introducing another short VN but whatever. =P

Spoiler:

Anyway, this is pretty short and you can finish an ending in about 15 minutes. Basically you have an very successful businesswoman named Jacqueline (a lesbian btw) who got into a terrible car crash and experienced Locked-In syndrome. She's aware but almost her entire body is immobilized except a finger or two, and to the other's it's as if she's in coma.

As she tries to recall what happened before the car crash you began to realize more and more how terrible Jacquelline is as a person due to overstress, pressure, suspicion and alcohol. She has pushed away all of her friends and family while making even more enemies than she already has. In the end, all of her evil deeds and terrible actions directly caused her own car crash, and the death of her best and only friend Brenda. The Locked-In syndrome she's suffering now may be seen as a punishment to all of her sins.

But. But Jacqueline was given a second chance. By realizing all the facts of the pasts you will now have to make a decision: Your doctor Nolan views you as her ultimate nemesis and is hiding your condition from everyone by claiming that you're in a coma. If you let him do as he pleases, you'll either end up dead or become paralysed - this time be in a permanent coma for real - forever. To redeem yourself and salvage whatever relationship you have left, you must choose who to trust: Is it your secretary Kimber, who you knew was embezzling funds from the company? Is it your ex-wife Deliah, who although competent at her own area was incredibly short-sighted and too stupid to manage a business? Or is it your sister Sasha, who's a good-for-nothing that would only seek you out when she needed funds for another one of her 'grand' idea that haven't succeeded once? Or maybe, you just can't trust any of them at all, choked by a pride too big to swallow?

By choosing who to trust - either individuals, no one at all or a combination of individuals - you will end up with 8 different endings. Some of them are short, some lengthy, and there's only 1 True/Best End (actually this is my subjective opinion, you should interpret the game as you please) where not only Jacqueline managed to redeem herself, she also stayed true to her own heart and beliefs. And I assure you, it is extremely satisfying to get it as the final ending... though that also meant that you're a huge idiot for getting it so late. Wait THAT'S ME SHIT! >_>

Now for the dry, boring BUT spoilerless review! ~v~

Story: A simple, sobering, yet relaxing read that would put a smile on your face. As long as you get the good endings of course.

Visuals: Spot on for a 15 minutes long Visual Novel; the style could not have fit anything longer without boring the readers. Its clear-cut, sharp-edged aesthetics - in strong contrast against Dysfunctional Systems - can be incredibly refreshing.

Sound: Fitting music with a classical feel that matches the atmosphere perfectly. Though the title screen OST can be a little too loud and even annoying, the others are absolutely fine and a please to the ears.

The moral and theme of the story is simple: Redemption. It isn't the most original reads in the world, but regardless this is beautiful in its simplicity spiced with perfect layers of darkness, regrets and humour. Plus it's free! XD So download it, read it, and I may you have a smile on your face for the rest of your day!

Been playing Kamidori too long, I finally broke free after playing two routes non-stop(Emelita FIRST, then Serewi's) which were hard as hell and I see why they recommended not doing Emelita's first. Thank god I got Evade II, Sword Flash II, and Yuela's Arena Gauntlet weapon in time for the last fight. My god I have to say, Wilfred is absolutely useless on his first play through in every sense imaginable. The only redeeming factor about him was that he was an amazing tank, I upgraded his clothing to bolster CON, and Troll Hammer Prevail I was just icing.
Spoiler:
Second Playthrough if you upgraded Wil's clothing he becomes virtually unkillable and unbelievably tanky, thank god. Literally had Uya, and Yuela run towards the Final Boss in Emelita's playthrough, and all the enemies died attacking Yuela since she was so far ahead of the rest of my party in terms of level. Took down that Goliath in like 2 turns after engaging it.

Anyways, got to hop on Majikoi S after I finally downloaded the Tsubame patch, and I haven't laughed this hard in so long, I missed reading VNs instead of playing an RPG for collective scenes and skits.

I went through another silly Nukige instead of bothering to go through something worthwhile, like Root Double, Kagetsu Tohya, Rewrite, another run through Heaven's Feel, Hakuoki, etc.. I'd like to say that it's because I'm hoping to find another great game stuck somewhere in there like Monster Girl Quest, but I think it's because they only take a few hours to complete. Even less if you skip all the filler crap.

Anyway, SSSS. It's awful, an awesome parody of spy movies, and halfway decent. While I can't say that there wasn't anything I hated, I wasn't too fond of the little sister or the main character in the sister/partner route. However, the Alice Saki route was decent, the Saki/Ruri route was actually good, and the Nana route was...passable? It had its moments, but it wasn't Saki/Ruri. Finally, the Maimi route sucked. Sure, the scene on the bike wasn't bad, but that's all it had going for it. To make it worse, that wasn't even exclusive to that route. However, the game does have good comedy moments, as should be expected from a parody.

For complaints, the h-scenes were too long, a character important enough to get her own sprite and voice was discarded despite there being only six sprites/voices in the game, most of the music was forgettable, and some routes sucked.

4/10, and that's only because of Ruri's awesomeness. If you ever play this for whatever reason, go for Ruri. She's really the only thing that makes this game worth going through if you already have it downloaded.

Almost done Tsubame's Route in Majikoi S, only problem is I don't have a 'reserve' VN to read while I wait for more content to be translated, probably will go digging to find a VN to dl and read.

Also, SnK Theme Goes with Everything is now a thing, and it goes hella well for Muv~Luv. What a throwback.

Finished Supika's route of 僕らの頭上に星空は廻る.

So first, this isn't a review, or should I say not a complete review. I'm not interested in going through the other girls as Supika's seemed to be more of a 'True' route due to the protagonist's connection with her in the past. However, by no means this game is bad and if you're a smitten romantic, do try this game out and I swear you'll love it.

So art wise they're kind of unique. I was slightly disappointed that it wasn't as epic as its poster - half wishing for a plot where the world is dead and the characters in search for hope from the stars or something, but alas - but they certainly look good after a little while to get used to. However, I find that the CGs a tad little disappointing : most of them focus on the characters and for a Visual Novel that boasts the theme of 'Stars' there were certainly very few(Supika route at least) wonderful depiction of the night skies at all. And her story was the one that tied strongest to starlight too.

Music wise, very peaceful. I could turn this on and nap like a baby within ten seconds of its lyrics if I want to honestly. In that sense it is very impressive, though I wish the ED song to be better.

Plot wise, well, I don't know enough to comment except Supika's route. Her problems are very simple, stupid and young, as an innocent and pure girl like her should be. All I can say that it has been a really peaceful ride throughout the VN with a love that never fails to make you smile.

Just finished Witch on the holy night Demo, and wondering should I start learning J or waiting for the translation V_V
0
Learn J. I suspect that the translation would reduce half of its appeal because the language in this particular VN played an instrumental role.

You are right, they like to play with words, Im an Asian myself, especially my own language have some similar contexts to Chinese, so I think I would learn Jap much more easier than any person from Western culture. However Im living in Aus, not that my English is bad, but only so so is not enough to learn Jap based on English text, double challenging isnt?

Madou Koukaku is out.

I promised my housemates (when they're not around) that I'm going to return the 'favor' they so humbly showed me a week before by torrenting to the point I can't read an email.

It is time to make it come true.
