Fighting games for life.
It takes skill, tactics, and proper executions.
In other words...
IT'S METAL AS SHIT.
BADASS AS FUCK.

Sorry I just now got to see this.
STG, Danmaku, Shumup, Bullet Hell, Twich shooter, are all the same genre just different ways of naming it.
Touhou is just a series of danmaku games, I'm just saying in general since I played only a few touhou games (compared to the insane amount of games from arcades and other places)

Well guns are like looking at porn for me and RPGs are always awesome but either alone is never top on my list. My favorite is a hybrid is an action RPG like BL1, BL2, Fallout 3, you get my drift son.

I like all genres except sport.
My favorites are (j)rpg, strategy, puzzle.
I excel in most shooters, and suck horribly in most fighters, yet my favor does not sync with my skill.
Currently looking for a fun and new mmo to play.

JRPGs is my favorite genre ever. I also like the Valkyrie Profile series including the first one which I love most.

Rpgs mostly since they always seem to draw ya in, and then next thing you know is it's 2 in the morning.

My choice was either RPG or Fighter.
Although fighters a great weekend or partyish game. It gets boring after a wile.
RPG, mostly J-RPGs, Have great art styles and stories that pull you in.
My favorite RPG series is the Tales series. Mainly because it doesn't use Turn-based combat

I'm a sucker for RPG games; who could ever forget the epic opening poem from Chrono Cross?
"What was the start of all this?
When did the cogs of fate begin to turn?
Perhaps it is impossible to grasp the answer now,
From deep within the flow of time...
But, for a certainty, back then,
We loved so many, yet hated so much,
We hurt others and were hurt ourselves...
Yet even then, we ran like the wind,
Whilst our laughter echoed,
Under cerulean skies..."

Strategy, putting a person brain against brain and succeeding is possibly one of the most satisfying experiences. But a person can learn from a potential friend in this genre as well. For grand strategy just keeping peace is a reward of its own. I like RPGs mainly for the story and background, but good combat helps.
