I enjoyed this chapter the first time I read it, but I didn't think of
it as a favorite. However, now that I have reread it several times,
it has grown on me, and I regard it as a tragicomic masterpiece.
I love the way Hishigata Tomaru plants all the clues without ever
explicitly revealing Toori's true nature. That's great storytelling.

As I noted in another comment, at the end, Toori still seems to be in
take-the-sexual-initiative mode. With that in mind, I noticed a subtly
disturbing detail in the final panel. When Toori says, "Let's start our
daily [sex] routine," she clutches her master quite vigorously (almost
violently). Unless he specifically orders Toori to be more gentle, she
is liable to inadvertently kill him during sex, which would be a truly
tragicomic ending.

True enough, that rather violent and mechanical seeming pull is pretty much the best evidence for your side.

To be fair to your viewpoint, I read the chapter yet again,
looking for more clues, and, more importantly, looking for
pertinent details that are missing.
For example:
Toori kisses her master during sex, but she's only responding
to him, and she never kisses him otherwise. She never says,
"I enjoy your company, master," or, "I like you, master." Most
tellingly, on page 11, when Toori's master says, "I love you,"
she does not react or respond at all.
If, at any point in the chapter, Toori had expressed even a hint
of genuine affection by, for instance, giving her master a sweet
kiss on the cheek while he was asleep, I would have cheerfully
conceded your point.

Oh, but looking at it again, my initial comment never mentioned her liking him - it's specifically saying "liked it", making it more about the sex itself rather than him as a person. ;)
Which I guess makes it an interesting middle ground between the sentimental appeal of an AI falling for a man and the unfeeling sexbot.

"An AI capable of developing feelings is much
more interesting than a simple sexbot."
That scenario has more sentimental appeal, for sure (and
it's been done countless times), but if we assume Toori's
master has fallen in love with an unfeeling machine, then
we have a poignant scenario, which is more sophisticated.

"Even assuming all this is correct, her true masters would still
be the company executives who sent her with him, though, so
staying beyond his recovery would still be something she deci-
ded of her own volition, making her at the very least a limited
AI capable of developing the feelings necessary to override
the original commands."
Those are good points. I agree Toori is a limited AI with a self-programming feature,
which aids her with her sexual duties. She learns from experience.
However, nothing in the story suggests Toori is obligated to leave her master "when he
recovers," which is rather vague and open-ended. Since the Ooseno firm insisted that
her master should accept overcompensation, they may be perfectly happy if Toori stays
with him indefinitely, thus freeing the firm from any further legal or financial obligation.
In any case, I don't think they're in any real hurry to get her back (as far as we can tell,
they never contact Toori's master after the settlement).
I know you wish to attribute genuine feelings to Toori, but that makes the story LESS
INTERESTING.

I wouldn't say less, really. An AI capable of developing feelings is much more interesting than a simple sexbot.
Opinions may differ, I guess.

I assume nothing. The clues are all there:
(1) Toori was provided by a big electronics firm.
(2) She has a complete lack of facial expression.
(3) She obeys her master unhesitatingly with cool, machine-
like efficiency.
(4) She never displays emotion unless her master requests
it (consciously or unconsciously), notably responding with
cliched endearments that sound distinctly preprogrammed.
Conclusion:
Toori is a state-of-the-art sexbot designed and built by
Ooseno Manufacturing (she even has the same surname).
The X-ray views merely suggest she's anatomically correct.
At the end, Toori stays with her master because he specifically
asks her to stay, and she always obeys her master. Plus, she
still seems to be in take-the-sexual-initiative mode, because
that's what her master wants. None of it has anything to do
with what SHE wants. She's only a machine.
You should appreciate the fact that Hishigata Tomaru wrote
a clever story that allows the reader to put the clues together.
There are similar stories on Fakku by other mangaka.

As a sexbot, Toori has no real feelings. She neither likes nor
dislikes anything she does for her master. If she initiates sex
or shows enthusiasm during the act, that's only because she
is responding to her master's specific sexual needs and habits
(which she probably learns with the aid of a self-programming
feature). No matter how she responds to anything, there's no
real feeling or emotion behind it. Toori's master, who remains
clueless about her true nature, has fallen deeply in love with
a cold, soulless machine---which makes this story a poignant
tragicomedy.

For asadpotato:
I really like your suggestion, which adds a rather sinister slant to the story,
especially since Toori seems to be on the verge of becoming dangerously
violent---in a mindless, mechanical way---as she responds to her master's
request to "take charge for once."

You assume a lot. And while I can see your standpoint to an extent, staying with him beyond the agreed upon time speaks against it, unless she's also learned to feel during the time (but this would still contradict part of your theory), as do the x-ray views.

Interesting description. I think that sums up what Hentai Logic is capable of.
By the way, an interesting tidbit for those who may not know Japanese, "Oose no Toori" is a way of saying "As you say", like when a servant hears a command from his/her master and replies with the affirmative.
Great ending though. Well hey, borrowing 'indefinitely' sounds kinda like...marriage, no? Also, with compensation like that, I think getting hit by a car and suffering such non-life threatening injuries is a good enough deal.

The maid, Ooseno Toori, has the same name as Ooseno
Manufacturing, which is a big electronics company. That,
plus her expressionless face, and weird lack of emotion,
strongly suggests she's actually a full-service ANDROID,
designed and built by Ooseno.
Even Toori's affectionate "pillow talk" has an odd ring, a distinct
quality that can only be described as "preprogrammed"---which
is subtly disturbing, because it means the protagonist has fallen
deeply in love with something that has no real feelings at all.

"Your insides feel completely different."
(page 14, panel 3)
That suggests Toori's (artificial) organs are rearranging
themselves to facilitate a specific sexual position.

Now you've got me thinking Toori-san might actually be the prototype for the Replicants (recall the original 1982 movie: "Blade Runner"), OR even a Third-type Android (for those who remember the classic anime OVA from 1995: "Armitage").

Does anyone else think the maid kind of looks like Roberta from Black Lagoon? I keep waiting for her to stab someone in the neck w/ a pair of glasses...
