I like your interpretation because it's elegantly simple. In fact, I had
briefly considered it, myself, but (mistakenly) set it aside because
it puts a rather dark (anti-vanilla) spin on the story. It means Ayame
is a deeply unstable, dangerously manipulative girl who's also a bit
of a slut (I still don't think she's a virgin).

I think she is saying that she never had an ex. She was climbing out the window for a different reason and played it off like she got dumped. He would be mad because he spent 2 months at the whim of what he viewed as an emotionally unstable girl.

Seems that when Wataru-kun stopped Ayame-senpai from doing something she might regret, he "caught a tiger (or in this case, a tigress) by the tail".
